This is parenting #101. No talking back to one's parents (Yakety Yak 'Don't Talk Back). Or the kids will not listen to rock and roll music, no allowance, no going out on a Friday night. If they don't do their fair share around the house. And oh, one more thing... "Don't forget to bring in the Dog and put out the Cat." Just love this. Great reaction as always.

This was how parents talked to kids back then. No negotiations...just do it. Disobey your mother and your father would deal with you. Song fro 1957 or 58. I was 9 or 10 so I didnt have to worry about going out on Friday night.

The TRUTH! They laid down the rules and they had the RIGHT to. Behave- or else. Do your chores- or else. What year was it that the government decided kids could sue their parents? I'm thinking 30 years ago...my nephews had the guidance counselor tell my sister that she HAD TO buy them name-brand tennis shoes because the other kids in school had them. Hmmmmmmmm.

The Coasters have lots of hits, some of their slower songs are "Just Like a Fool". "Down Home Girl", or One Kiss Led to Another". I grew up in the 80's and 90's but I found a Little Anthony and the Imperials tape in my dad's car one day and I've been stuck on the oldies ever since. Those days had real singers and the best music, in my opinion.

I remember when I was in the Navy (big mistake) and was in Norfolk, VA to pick up my ship (ship is a big misnomer, it was an escapee from a razor blade factory). I went to a Rock-and-Roll show headlining Jerry Lee Lewis. On the show were the Coasters as well as other performers. Great show. The Coasters were known for a lot of fun music. I'll always remember "Little Egypt" because my mother's name was Eva and all those who worked around her called her Little Eva not just because of the song but she stood about 4'10". But as you can see (or hear) by "Yakety Yak" it's basically a guidebook for parents.

I think somebody living in Australia right about now might feel that way about Daniel Andrews. I hope they lighten up on you soon. Also, i've heard a lot musician friends refer to a particular style of saxophone playing as "yakity sax" - The Benny Hill theme for instance. I think that term was born out of this song.
