What an experience! We hiked a volcano! Volcan de Acatenango is a stratovolcano in Guatemala near the city of Antigua. The volcano peaks at just above 13,000 feet and is connected to its sister volcano, Volcan de Fuego which towers at ~12,300 feet above sea level. Volcan de Fuego is the most active volcano in Central America and is one of the most active in the world, erupting about every 10 minutes, give or take a little for my rough personal observations ;)
We spent the day climbing this mountain before setting up camp near the summit. We spent the night in awe of the natural wonder that is an actively erupting volcano before awaking to summit the remainder of the volcano and catch one of the most beautiful sunrises I've ever witnessed. The views of the erupting volcano and volcanos in the distance peaking their heads out of the blanket of clouds below us were sights I will never forget.
