Land at a ghost town on Route 66 (Amboy), find an awesome airport restaurant, fly into the sunset.

We stopped in Amboy, CA to check out one of Harrison Ford's favorite stops, and it's an incredible example of the kind of places GA can take you.
This was also my favorite and the hardest vlog I've ever made, for reasons entirely non-technical. My best friend, Colt, was able to join us for about a day and a half on this trip (he shot all the drone footage in this one), and it turned out to be our last adventure together; he was killed in a tragic airplane accident about two weeks ago. But I'm so happy to share a little bit of him with all of you.

And I want to add that this really shows that even though flying is the best thing in the world and you’ll never have more fun with your pants on; we all have to remind ourselves that flying is still dangerous and accidents can happen, even to the best of us (which Colt seemed to be one of).

It's too bad his friend passed away. Based on witness accounts, he overloaded his plane when he was carrying two passengers, along with propane tanks, mortar, bricks, and other heavy materials. He tried taking off twice unsuccessfully from the lake (it was a seaplane), and finally succeeded on his third attempt. It's unfortunate, you would think that an experienced pilot would recognize that his plane is overloaded, but I guess sometimes you just feel confident enough in the plane's capabilities that you keep thinking "I'll try it once again". Sorry for the loss of his friend though

My parents good friend Newt Crumley who was one of the most experienced pilots, both Military and private tried to outguess the weather over the Sierra's and iced up and went in like a rock near Tonopah NV. Sometimes even the best pilots make decisions that turn out bad. My Parents had spent the weekend in Palm Springs with him, they had driven. Newt asked my Dad to leave the car and they would pick it up the nest weekend. My Dad opted for the car and I didn't end up an orphan at age 9.Newt owned the Holiday Hotel in Reno and Eddie Questa, his friend and passenger, was Pres. of one of the local banks.A google search of his name has numerous links about him and the accident. It is a very interesting and sad story worth looking up.I just read an article that speculates that they could have made it to Reno (if my Parents had been on board) that Elko was too far in the weather at the time. Reno was the original plan. After all these years what a horrible thought....

Hi Matt et al. We cling to life by a thread. Accidents happen to the brightest of us. For some reason we deviate from our training be it in a professional endeavor, riding a bike, sailing a boat, driving a car or motorcycle or whatever. Most of us cling longer for one reason or another (sometines luck) and enjoy a longer journey. You will know what I mean when you reflect back later in life.

I'm sorry about your friend Colt. I remember we lost a pilot in our squadron, he was a great guy. Use to always have a smile on his face with his news paper and his squadron cup with his normal coffee in it, remember his laugh and he always smiled and was super friendly. He went down in 2007, I remember being on the flight line at 2 a.m. and one of our pilots seen him crash outside of Fallon Nevada and I remember it being so hard to keep the tears back. We just sat there in shock. Took us a while to get back to normal.

I just found you and i never got to know Colt, But i can tell just from the little i have seen that he had just as much passion for flying as you, I believe he died doing what he loved, I also believe that he felt loved and part of a family not just from his parents etc, But from you and your friends and the greater flying community. Sharing things the way you have in this video and showing others just how much you care and how special Colt was to you, will bring great comfort to all those around Colt in showing the ways he embraced his sadly short life, Sharing the feelings and experiences that only those close and in the flying circle know well, Will and will have already created joy and wounder from the ashes of disaster, From one Human to another , Keep on being you! My condolences to you your friends and of course colts family, I am sure you will help keep his legacy alive in the stories you share with you family and all those out there who are able to listen, Thank you for sharing such an elegant and well made tribute to your late friend... Yours John Cartwright.

I took route 66 in 1966. Got on at Barstow California. Water cost more the gas going across the desert. A sign said; 300 miles of desert ahead. I had two five gallon cans of water. Two of gas. Food and drinking water. There was nothing but you and the road. Not a drive way, or mail box. Just brush. I could see the next range ahead. It looked close but it was 100 miles away. Almost no one on the road. Because it was summer. The air temperature was 110 to 115 degrees. My old truck didn't have A/C. I was running low on water when I got to The Painted Desert Trading Post near the Petrified Forest. Water was free because they dug a new well. They were letting the water run until it was clear. They were using a wind mill electric generator for power. Got off route 66 at Indianapolis Indiana. All in all. It was a great (sometimes HOT) trip. Thanks; Airman First Class Gary A. That ending was a shocker, Matt. I’m sorry to learn of your friend Colt’s early departure from what was obviously a very promising life. I’ve noticed that you seem to be a competent but careful pilot. I suspect you would not push the limits. This is wise; the secret to many happy safe hours flying. My CFII used to regularly remind me that “There are old pilots and bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots.” I learned to fly in his brand new Cessna 152 and I think he was afraid I might bend it. Never did. Sweet little plane; full instruments. N121TM was destroyed by a powerful South Florida hurricane. Sad. Your landing on Route 66 was especially interesting to me I had a few adventures on that highway as a young man.

My sincere condolences to both you and your friend’s family. To lose one’s best friend is some of the worst that could happen to anyone. I hope this doesn’t scare you away from your dream of flying. I have a challenge for you. Do what it takes for you to be happy, for both you and Cole. Many put happiness in the back seat in favor of goal, a career, kids, growing old etc. Continue following your dreams and be happy - now - not later. Warm thoughts from Norway.

So sorry to hear about your loss and especially for Colt and his family. It was prescient that you dropped some weight off to land in Amboy...Thanks for the great video.
