I’ll never forget visiting a friend for a week and she gave me her bed and slept on the floor. Always stayed with me. Hospitality can be such a powerful visual of sacrifice!

I sing in a choir. Our rehearsals usually take place in a parish house later in the evening. Once, I was there with my second child, she was only a few weeks old. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. We knew the priest was somewhere out so we answered. There were three foreigners, it was half past nine in the evening, dark. They had backpacks, looked tired and friendly, and claimed they were pilgrims looking for a place to stay overnight. Long story short. After a call to my husband, I took them home. During a ride home with a newborn and three strangers in a car, I hoped not to be a stupid star of some true crime podcast episode. However, it turned out into a wonderful experience.

I’m glad you and your newborn didn’t become a true crime case also. My gosh, I’ve put myself in situations that I later realized weren’t the best idea and the thoughts of what could have happened become paralyzing. Your story also reminds me of being a kid, my little sister and I would stay at our older sisters place often while our parents worked. My oldest sister is 10 years old than I am. One night it was storming and cold, late at night there was a knock on the door. This couple claimed they were far from home, their car broke down and asked if they could stay until morning. My brother in law was such a caring and compassionate man. He invited them in, no hesitation. Yet my older sister was quite upset and worried. They had a few small children, babies plus the responsibility of me and our youngest sister there. My sister was the voice of reason, and the voice of worry. My brother in law put all of us kids in one room together and he stayed awake all night at the top of the stairs while this couple slept in the living room. Thankfully we all didn’t become a true crime headline. In the morning my brother in law made them breakfast and they went on their way. I remember him telling me something like, you never know if someone in need is an Angel testing you. Because the way we treat those in need and despair is what matters most in life. Sadly a couple years later he was in a fatal accident at work. I miss him so much. He was an amazing person and such a good brother to myself and my siblings. I apologize for this very long comment

Yes please do a video on sleep and CO sleeping! So many people are unaware of Dr James McKenna and all the wonderful research he did that supports safe bed sharing. We got so much criticism when our first son was born because we didn't force him to stay in a crib/bassinet.

I met a lady at Edith Falls (NT AU look it up) … decided to share my “story” figuring she would be a stranger I would never encounter again … later in the day I offered to house her car while she went OS … in her return Covid hit and we were in the most restrictive place in the planet … and to this she lived with us for the best part of the next 18 months! Who knew … 😂 and she became a very very close crunchy friend

I went to a youth conference at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in June. My group leader who was our female chaperon confiscated all the girls phones, and the boys phones went to the male chaperon. I didn't have my phone for three days except for texting my Dad and Grandmother at the end of each day. I loved the environment in our dorm and during talks, bc I felt alot more peace and concentration without worrying about my phone.

If you want to see unconditional hospitality, you should go to rural Turkey. Elderly people, you ask direction, will ask you how long you've been on the road, are you hungry, do you have space to sleep, etc. Because of engraved religious obligations in their culture, there are still villagers who have very limited food supply and underprivileged living conditions still will offer whatever they have. Because a guest means God himself visiting you. Whatever you offer to your guest, you get it back from the universe in ten folds. I suggest anyone who reads this comment to check out the videos out there posted by Americans who live in different countries. They share their mutual experience about how living in America messed up your mindset about people, how much distrust we have towards strangers and how unhealthy our thinking at a level of PTSD like a guy whose hand in his jacket in a movie theater would make you think firstly that he is a mass shooter. While he is only hiding a beer bottle that is not allowed.

Once again, this is totally relatable. My family once took in a grad student thru-hiker on the Appalachian trail who was underprepared for the journey and did not have nearly enough food or supplies. He got a bed, I slept on the floor. There was definitely a blend of genuine desire to be hospitable and also not to die a brutal death. Also, I think the pre-company cleaning video you referred to was from comedian Chris Fleming. Classic.

My husband and I stayed with my husband's parents because our military base was 40 minutes away and we were waiting for housing. They put us in a tent that was about 200 ft from the house. 😂

I just realized, after watching this video, that I enjoy planning parties, birthday parties, Christmas parties, Halloween parties, you name it! I enjoy getting together with a lot of people and bringing everyone together. However, I do not enjoy hosting dinners with just one other family. I’m really not sure why. But, this was an interesting revelation to me. 😅

We can't let people know that we SIT!!!!" *Turns on vacuum cleaner and screams* This was 100% my mother growing up and probably contributes a lot to why I hate the lead up to guests. Even though I'm in my own home with my own family and don't really care so long as the house is clean, I still get that anxious tension in the lead up to guests. It's just the general anticipation of people arriving that I really struggle with!

We give our bed to couples that stay with us, because it's the best bed. And we have given our entire apartment and went over to our church to sleep. We love being able to host. We have taken people in for extended periods of time. God gave us all we have, it belongs to Him and we use what we have to serve Him! And if you want to visit us in Germany, you are always welcome!

For perspective, we are retired now, but had all sorts of people to our house back in the day when we were raising our kids. We had pool parties, BD parties, family gatherings, teens hanging out, small group meetings, etc. We also hosted 4 different exchange students, each for the entire school year plus. We had wealthy people over and they didn't give a hoot about our humble home. I also ran a tea house, which we also lived in (upstairs and basement) and welcomed literally thousands of people into our home (It was an old English Tudor). Please realize that friends, family, kid's friends - they are there to see you or your kids, not your house. Relax! Enjoy!

I wouldn’t necessarily give my “best” sleeping position, but def try to give separate space depending on person and their needs. Single friends we just usually share a bed!

Love this episode! I've tried being more hospitable in the last year. I had to stop caring if my house is perfect and just do it. What is the hardest for me is trying to open my open and people not showing up 😔 If you all are ever in Northern Indiana, you are welcome to come visit! Oooooo! I just remembered a great hospitality story! I'm from the Atlanta area, but this was after I was out of the house. My parents got a call to quickly go down to South Georgia (about a 5 hour drive)....long story....so they ended up there, around midnight, at a great-aunt's house. The great aunt and uncle were in bed when my parents arrived. They got out of their bed and let my parents sleep in it! (I guess they slept on a couch or something.) My mother remembers that the bed was STILL WARM! Now....THAT'S Southern hospitality! But, to be honest, I can't sleep in someone else's un-washed sheets! LOL

We always give our room to guests. It’s right next to the only bathroom and requires no stairs. Great for grandparents or anyone else.

I don't like having guests and I don't like being a guest. When we go visiting I actually prefer staying at a hotel. Do unto others...😂 I actually think I have taught my children better though! My son will give his friend his bed and sleep on the couch in a heartbeat!

Yeah Emily clearly has no idea how most people do hospitality. I’m all for being generous and hospitable, but I would never ever sleep on the floor and let guests have my room. Also, as a guest I would be highly uncomfortable if I was given the master bedroom. I appreciate the willingness, but me not being willing to do that doesn’t make me a bad host.

This is so relatable 😄 I also struggle to host in our current small house in a not-so-great neighborhood. Y’all are making me feel better about it. We’ve experienced the dealers and gun shots here as well. Actually we just had a roof inspection and the roofer found a bullet stuck in the roof when looking for hail damage…people over here like to shoot up in the air during celebrations 😫 we are in the process of moving to the country though, I’m excited!

My parents never gave up their room to guests. Even when we lived in houses that didn't have enough rooms. I was the youngest so I'd always get booted to the couch so i was always in a communal space lol which even as a kid I remember feeling weird sleeping and having guests waking up and walking past me while I'm sleeping 😂 Emily, I feel the exact same way about not having people come over! I don't mind hosting but I'm not exactly comfortable with my little apartment with my two kids and so we usually go to everyone else's house but after a while it seems weird to not extend the invitation back. It's like a mother in law suite over a 3 car garage on my mom's 30 acre property but it's technically a one bedroom so it just looks cluttered because there's not enough room. You're so right though it seems silly to invite someone over. Plus, I tend to get anxious the whole time someone is over lol

Something that I learned to do, to make hosting less intimidating, was to just invite people over for pizza night. I still make the pizza, but it's way easier on me to prep, and I actually MAKE them when everyone arrives, so that they're fresh. By doing this, I: 1. only need to buy ingredients and prep the dough and salad BEFORE guests arrive; 2. Have more time to focus on cleaning; 3. Can have a guest help IF they want to. People like to be useful when they visit someone, so it's actually quite kind to give someone a task when they ask; and 4. DON'T NEED TO PLAN A MENU!

Oh, I know exactly how you feel! We have a little house that's almost 100 years old and we have a bunch of renovations that we're doing ourselves. I really want to invite other young families from our church over, but I'm always nervous about little kids tripping over construction materials or down the basement stairs! Looking forward to finishing up some of our construction so we can have people over. 😅

I’m terrible at hospitality. We’re a military family and move every 2-3 years (sometimes less than that). Hosting people, unless they’re close family like my parents or in-laws, is draining to me. I guess that shows that I’m an introvert, because social situations tend to drain me and I recharge by being alone/with my close family. 😂 But I do wish I was better at hospitality!

Totally agree! The guest(s) always get the best. And, no, not everyone goes with that. We spent nights with some family members, and got the sleeper sofa in their den. It was the MOST HORRID "bed"! I never got any sleep when we slept at their house. But, of course, we never mentioned it. And, if that that's not bad enough....we recently found out they KNEW how bad it was! Terrible hospitality!

Kissing the hand & both cheek is a malay culture thing, we do it to our elders as a sign of respect & closeness. So the one kissing the hand is usually the younger person doing to an older person. Some kiss the hand, some put the hand to their forehead or cheek, just somewhere on your face. Malays from Indonesia, Malaysia & South Africa do it, anyone that is ethnically Malay, its a cultural thing

Growing up in a very big house is not much fun for children. Sure, there's plenty of space to play, but it is very ease to lose a child. I loved going to friend's homes simply because they were cozy. I didn't feel isolated when in bed. Hosting guests was my mother's joy, while I don't like it. A meal is fine, but overnight is a no no.

31:09 on vacations and family visits... we have four kids under 7 and live 2.5 hours away from the closest set of "grandparents"... the first vacation we had in our 7 years of parenthood as a family was last year. It's priorities. We get different views on hosting for sure and being a guest... there are people you just want to have over and there are people you don't ever want to be guests of. Everybody lives differently

I’m not one to host, or hang out with anyone. The biggest thing is my husband and I have been together since we were 15 but now at 31 we aren’t friends with the same people. Couple friends? Never 😅 we also live 30 minutes away from people we know in a town of 700 people and have a yard with no shade trees (I’ve planted natives don’t worry-they’re just small) and our kids are 5 and 2 and taking the 2 year old out of routine to see people sometimes isn’t worth it 😅I’m such a grump 😂

When I went to Disney World recently, whenever we were sitting down to eat, I looked around and saw that everyone was glued to phones in other parties while my family was talking and interacting without them. It was really weird to me. You paid all that money to take a vacation and you aren't even interacting?? I grew up in a home that always let people stay over all the time (my parents still do so) but my entire family was filled with extraverts too - my parents, two brothers, and myself. I would do the same if I had a house, but I live in a tiny place for a family of 5 that only has 2 bedrooms. . .so not happening haha.

This isn’t that crazy. Maybe. Lol. In 2011 I connected with another mom who was also pregnant with twins and due a few days before me. We texted for a couple months and then decided to meet up. My husband and I truly drove 14 hours across the country with infant twins and a 2 year old to stay a week with her family in her house. That’s normal, right?

I totally understand not wanting people over. I once lived in a house where I woke up to a lady screaming and it turned out her BF woke her up with a bloody knife. It ended up with our street full of cops as they hunted him down. 😅, who needs TV when you have neighbors like these.

TALK ABOUT SLEEP. I have a 4 and 2.5 year old and feel like an absolute weirdo because we play musical beds with our kids too. My husband now sleeps with our youngest (he took over when nursing ended) in one room and I sleep with our 4 year old in "our" room. She has a mat on the floor next to the bed she starts the night on but always ends up in bed with me. I wish I'd known the most pointless purchase we could have ever made was a crib. Our kids have only ever slept in full on beds with us. Honestly I'm in the same boat as Emily about having more kids and I kind of wonder when you choose to parent in such a close, responsive way, adding more kids seems super overwhelming. But the idea of being done makes me so sad too. Also my husband said no more until our kids sleep independently which will be...never at this rate 😅 Thank you for mentioning it though - I feel less alone in this wild sleep ride! We keep thinking we will get our girls in a bed together eventually. Who knows!

I promise that your kids won't still be sleeping with you when they go to college. ;-) The family bed is the best hard thing you'll ever do. Between 3-4yo, we started talking about them sleeping in their own bed. Making positive comments about it and talking about how big they are and how much they've grown, and that's what will happen at 4. I always point put the positives to the situation. It makes the transition a bit easier. However, I do tell them that they're welcome to come get me if they're scared or need me.

Hospitality is so good in the South/ Appalachia. In the North, it's really sketchy.

When we first moved to our homestead, th e bedrooms needed the drywall and insulation redone... so we put our queen mattress, and two kids twins together in our sunroom (no neighbors around to see us in pjs anyways) and did a super family bed while fixing things up. We all slept great and our circadian rhythms were all on point lol
