"Pointless Memories of A Stupid Moment When We All Cared WAY Too Much About 'JOKER'"
(RE-UPLOAD! Please like, share, comment and re-post 👍)
As part of a longer term project to compile a "retrospective documentary" of my decade in covering the failure of the DC Extended Universe movies, the financial collapse of Warner Bros and the entire cultural history surrounding the same; it became clear that there was A LOT of "JOKER" coverage in there in particular during the 2019-2020 period between the actual review and when "THE BIG PICTURE" was running twice weekly - so much so that it could sustain a compilation all on it's own and be interesting in its own right.
So here, together, a (mostly) full compilation tracking the announcement, release, awards season buildup, media hype and fallout from a very VERY stupid moment in time 🤦‍♂️

5:16 One major (or minor) exception to that for Batman villains: Professor Hugo Strange. Started off as a mad scientist before Denny O'Neill reimagined him as Sigmund Freud's evil twin in the 1970s, a version that got brought to the modern era by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy in the Batman storyline Prey. How he was in the game Arkham City is a unique Batman opponent: a guy who beats Batman without a costume, alter ego or weird gimmick, just pure psychological torture.

Great review! If you get a chance, and an inclination to take a fresh look at an older, tragically overlooked movie that is equally emotionally impacting and exemplary as a work unto itself as "Up" was, when you first watched it, before the messiness of context complicated things, I recommend Jim Henson's "The Tale of the Bunny Picnic". Like any of his best works, the characters, story, and world are full of life, and it is a great shame that they are all but forgotten. I also posit, along with this recommendation, that it is precisely the movie we, all humans, all of us, everywhere, needed to remember in 2020, and that the next best time for it to be remembered is now.

I'll make the same criticism that Bob makes about anyone who disagrees with him politically and state the obvious - he thinks there's no point to the movie because he's missed the point. I think if you haven't actually experienced the way that mental illness goes untreated and is swept under the rug its easy to dismiss it and be snarky and supercillious about any attempt to use it as a part of a movie's narrative

Years after i watched this in the theatre i still haven't made up my mind whether or not this movie is good or not. I know when it came on streaming i had no desire to revisit it, which i guess tells me what i need to know. I think it was way too self-aware to be truly enjoyable. When fleck refers to himself as a 'mentally ill loner' that made me wince. Bob said it in the video, it's reciting the language but doesn't understand it. A guy who is dissociative enough to put on clown makeup wouldn't refer to himself as mentally ill. That's not how it works.

I'm split about the Joker 2019. On one hand, I liked it more than I thought I would and I liked a lot of the film's ideas; on the other hand, I would've preferred a Joker origin film that was closer to the original comic origin, or at least an origin film that tried to explain the origin of The Dark Knight's Joker. I would've even preferred a Joker origin that was done in the style of a classic noir gangster film or a bloody Shakespearean tragedy. Writing good supervillains, even complex and sympathetic ones, is a delicate art, and it's easy to screw up if the writer is all over the place and unfocused with what they want the villain to be. The animated series, for instance, though it only hinted at the Joker's origin, gave well-developed and sympathetic origin stories for the Riddler, Two-Face, Clayface, and Mr. Freeze. What I liked about those origin episodes was that Batman had sympathy for what happened to the villains, but he still had to fight them when he had to. Sometimes, Batman was able to help the villains get some justice, like when he exposed Mr. Freeze's boss, Ferris Boyle, for kicking Freeze into the chemicals and covering it up. While Batman saved the Ridder's egotistical boss, Daniel Mockridge, from getting killed by the Riddler, he showed no sympathy when Mockridge spent the rest of his nights lying in fear of the Riddler coming after him. Batman kept trying to reach out and help Two-Face, since they were best friends as Bruce and Harvey, and still kept trying to help him even when Two-Face kept pushing him away. I don't think Clayface got justice for what his employer, Roland Daggett, did to him, though Batman knew he was responsible, and the police nearly arrested Daggett for his crimes. Of course, Marvel came up with some great sympathetic and complex supervillains themselves, as seen in Magneto and a few others. Magneto started out as a campy supervillain, but became more and more complex over the years, and was given a sympathetic motivation to show why he distrusted non-mutants so much. Even the antiheroes of Watchmen still provide good ideas on how to develop a supervillain: even if the supervillain is in the form of a superhero who believes himself to be good. The trick is to make the villains understandable, but still show that they are too far gone to be reasonable, redeemable, or likable. Satirical superhero stories, like The Venture Bros., though humorous, do a good job in making supervillains who are ruthless, reactionary, and homicidal into relatable characters. The Monarch and Phantom Limb are prime examples of such villains. No matter how menacing and terrible a supervillain is, they're really are just maladjusted nuts with gimmicks who don't know how to function any other way. The thing about the Joker as a villain is that he's supposed to be a regular person who gets disfigured and loses his sanity by swimming in chemicals after a failed attempt at petty robbery. The chemicals specifically make him look like a clown by making his skin white, lips red, and hair green. Once he's been turned into clown-like man, he becomes a murderous clown-themed villain just for the thrill of it. He's supposed to be some nobody who becomes the most horrifying supervillain imaginable purely by accident, and he could be anybody. Joker 2019 had some very good ideas, but if it wanted to be more profound, it needed to go further. It's all well enough to have Phoenix's Joker first start out as a tragic character who wants to avenge himself for bad circumstances, but why make him just a misunderstood character driven to madness and murder? I mean, I know other Batman villains, like Mr. Freeze, Riddler, and others were driven to be bad by the same circumstances, but is that what the Joker is about? As we've seen from many Joker stories, he's mainly motivated to pull off murderous pranks for the fun of it and to attract attention for it. How do you make the Joker relatable but still detestable? If one were to rewrite Joker 2019, you'd have to establish the Joker first as a relatable, everyday person, but then have some trigger make him want to done the Joker identity: something other than being misunderstood or wanting revenge. He would enjoy playing the Joker, and start playing him more and more, but then he plays the role to the point that he can't stop being the Joker. The more he dons the Joker identity, the less sympathetic and the more cruel he becomes. Maybe being stuck in the Joker role could be caused by an unspecified multiple personality disorder that the Joker's character didn't know he had. Eventually, near the end of the movie, the Joker's old personality is gone, and the Joker's new personality has taken over. A character losing himself into a new, drastically different personality would be the metaphorical toxic chemicals the new Joker would fall into. There are precedents for developing a tragic villain this way. Shakespeare's Macbeth started out as a admirable man before he murdered King Duncan. Once Macbeth killed his king and his best friend, he became a self-serving tyrant who provoked everybody against him. Marlowe's Doctor Fautus started as an admirable genius, and then, after his pact with Mephistopheles, turns into a bored, superpowered man who can have anything but is unfulfilled, and suffers an existential crisis because of that. If you want to make the Joker terrifying and relatable, just show how becoming the Joker could cause anybody to lose their sense of self, and their soul in the process. One way to explore how a Joker origin film could've been done would be to host a creative writing contest among aspiring scriptwriters, have them read their scripts, and have a discussion over what character and plot ideas work and what doesn't work. I'd go to such a creative writing event if you hosted it, Mr. Chipman.

It's interesting you mention Falling Down. I hate Joker, but it made me think about FD again on account of the plot structures - and partially, the main characters - of the two films overlapping. Ultimately, I think Falling Down is a smarter and better written film, but kind of shallow overall. It is understandable why people like both films, especially the specific people you mention. But the mere presence of certain premises or themes in a film does not mean they are done proper justice. People think that if you criticize Joker, you are a shill for the establishment or something, which is ludicrous. There are many films that deal with the stuff found in Joker and Falling Down, and do so better than either.

So this like bobs hot take on ghost busters, he takes his interpretation as the word of God. Allen moore has had some good points, if you enjoyed fight club cause you thought it was macho don't let bob think for you. Of course the Joker's awful. You'd have to be a writer on Harley Quinn to not get that (that's a joke, that shows fine).

Well, it's not. Rage is certainly part of Parasite's equation but it actually IS about class more than anything.

Jojo rabbit was made by a maori-jewish man, but sure, white male rage
@johnathonhaney8291
@johnathonhaney8291 Год назад
No, no, it's ABOUT white male rage and its costs. The twist is that it's done from the perspective of that Maori-Jewish man, who rightly calls it out for the bullshit it is. I'm still waiting on SOME-FUCKING-BODY to draw the same connection between the kidnapped Asgardian children in Thor: Love And Thunder and what the white colonialists did with captured children in the real world, made by the same Maori-Jew in the former case.

@wet-read

No, it isn't. If you want to know why, I have meticulously crafted reasons and can point you to other negative reviews that say why it isn't good. FWIW, I am open to seeing criticisms of things I happen to like and/or think good, in case I missed something or am mistaken in my appraisal, and am capable of shifting my opinion in proportion to points raised therein.

@@wet-read yes it is, "meticulous reasons" uh huh sure, James Berardinelli and Dustin Putman both did excellent positives review for that film that I highly recommend you check out.
