We'll Get By (The Autism Song)
Johnny Orr Band
Official Video Release
John & John Entertainment LLC. 2014
WE'LL GET BY
By: Johnny Orr written August 2013
Maybe I don't speak too well, but I'm coming outta my shell
And I like playing by myself if you can't tell
I like to go to school, yeah I'm a miracle, and I'm glad to be alive
If you'll wait patiently, well then eventually,
I will understand the words that you're saying to me
My autism, is like a prison, that I'm in
I share my heart but only in my mind,
I share my pain when I scream at night
I can't express to you, what I'm going through,
The only way is for me to cry
Mom I see your fear, through every single tear
Just to know I've caused you pain from inside of here
My autism, is like a prison, that I'm in
I share your joy but only in my mind
You show me love but just not in my time
Cause my reality, takes everything in me
To make it through without a fight
I know you love me, when you hug me,
And when I hear you pray to God for Him to heal me
Maybe one day, you won't have to pray
And I won't have to see you cry
(reprise)
Maybe one day, I won't be this way,
Until then we'll get by

Today I attented an Autism Walk for my sweet nephew Jace in Idaho. A nine year old boy named Matthew with Aspergers stood up in front of the crowd and sang this song for everyone to hear. I definitely had tears rolling down my face so I searched to find it online and now I keep replaying it and sharing it. Thank you for writing this and spreading awareness and acceptance!

An when i heard this song i loved it. I also have a 17 year old daughter with out autism. It's really hard when the child is as big as you and as tall as you when they have an episode. An you don't know what to do cause you can't pick them up anymore. You have to wait till its over. I want to thank you for this from all the mothers and father's of an autistic child's family.

The first time I heard this song, which was yesterday, I started to cry. I thought of my little brother. He's eleven and has Autism and its hard on all of US but especially him. He tries so hard to be like the other kids but he just can't. He's amazing and I love him no matter what he is no matter who he is and no matter what he acts like. This song just relays the message that all Autistic people want to say, they just can't find the words

Thank you for writing the song and I know it will touch many but parents need to understand there is no healing or cure for autism. That there will be growth and progress, yes, but that is who they are. We must embrace our children and let them know it's okay to be that way. It is a prison and society constantly is telling them they are wrong and we need to "cure" this "disease". My daughter, 9, is autistic and I went through the fear and the tears, but that's what the doctors made me feel. They told me the negative, society only showed the negative, not the wonders. Not the laughs, the love, the knowledge this child would possess. Our children hear this negative view all the time and it hurts their spirit. Protect them, be strong, and love them with all you got. They are fine the way they were made and the more you acknowledge that to them they will be more happy, productive and feel safe. I hope to not offend anyone, but I want people to be strong and just love. Don't live in fear and sadness. Celebrate the growths and their lives everyday.
@johnnyorrmusic
@johnnyorrmusic 10 лет назад
I understand completely. The healing is "The progress" that they make. Things do change as they get older and begin to communicate. That in turn actually brings healing to them and the families that struggle with it. Thank you so much for sharing.

I have aspergers which is high functioning autism, I got diagnosed at age 10 and I've had many people ask me why I don't just get cured and I sometimes wish there was a cure but I know that I can't get rid of it so for the past few years I've been working with my friends and teacher to cope with it. My parents are really supportive and treat me the same as my siblings (who don't have autism) My dad even helped me on a train where I was close to having a meltdown and a nice lady who was near me also helped once my dad let her know what was going on. I don't know who this woman is but I am grateful that she was there that day

My mom got him into every therapy possible and all of the early intervention has helped. He is now a high-functioning young adult and one of the smartest most passionate person I know. This is a great song and although it may not fit everyone's experience it is another way to spread awareness. Thank you for writing this.

He is the blessing of my life. He has made me a better parent, a better person. He has taught me the meaning of unconditional love, and true sacrifice. He is brave, graceful, and strong. This song brought tears to my eyes. I am a teen autism advocate with Autism who loves to sing and paint and write and think deeply about the world around me. My goal in life is to reach out to hurting teens, "normal" or not, and spread a message of love and acceptance. I believe that being different isn't a curse, but a fact. The idea of normality is just an illusion. It's inspiring to listen to songs this. So thank you for sharing this beautiful song!!

This is not bugga star posting. is my son with a hopeful youtube channel. Like it if you can! We have our youngest with autism and was able to tell airlines early on. We need to stop pushing the fear of child with autism and push this song. Our youngest is almost 9 and still doesn't talk and that's scary. However, autism has only brought us a different way of teaching our daughter and none of the fear they made it seem like. Lots of heart and soul from my little girl. OK giving my youtube back to bugga Star.

I couldn't help crying. This really fit the disorder. I've got autism myself, high functioning autism in fact and this is my favourite song of autism cause it's really true. It's really a prison to be locked inside oneself and can't get anyone to understand. I can only speak for myself since I know autistic kids and adults do feel different about the disorder, but I believe god had something to do with it, not in a bad way however, since he gave me the strength so see and notice things so many others doesn't. Even when it's taugh not being able to make myself clear through words and stuff, always make people misunderstand me or whatever, I still think it's a way of protecting oneself and god gave us that gift. I love this song, because it says the truth. Thank you for writing and sharing it!

My Autistic brother enjoys this song dearly, though he got mad when he heard the phrase "Autism is a Prison" Autism is not a prison, but in fact an amazing safe space full of wonder and excitement that stimulate the young mind of our protagonist. Yellow cards are his favorite, he makes a high pitched styled stim noise that can be described as the sound of the American "A" sound, "no accent mark included" it's so cute and awesome when we play Uno, when he sees a yellow card this particular stim activates like a Transformer specifically Optumus Prime, which is a sign of being straight to me.

Not everyone with ASD is capable of learning ASL. My son can't we have tried. He's learning to use and IPAD but he still doesn't know how to use to tell us how he's feeling or if he's hurting or been hurt or if he's sick etc. He just turned 7 and has been using an iPad for just over a year. Communication is extremely hard for him and seeing how frustrated, angry, sad, and vulnerable he gets when we can't figure out what he's trying to communicate. I absolutely 100% feel like that would feel like a prison while going through it. That's not to say it'll always be that way. But for now I can definitely imagine he feels very trapped inside his mind.

This song is touching to some but a developmental disorder to others. My nephew had autism since birth and every second I spend with him is enjoyable. I do NOT claim to know the meaning of autism or it's disorders but I am willing to learn by research than stereotype or be negative. Every lyric rang true in this song on Joey's behalf, what a "miracle". He also shares his unconditional love with arms wide open every day with a simple smile, my hero. Uncle Ronnie's love for his little buddy will never fade away but grow more stronger every day.

To take away or "cure" my Autism would make me a totally different person. Autism can be difficult, but so can being neurotypical.

Yeah why? Even us with autism is smart. I mean look at me, i can read and write and speak and all those things "normal" people can besides what is "normal"? To me autism is normal. I guess people that dont like autism dont know what theire saying. If just they knew what we are going through... stay strong people! Autism is far from easy but rememeber there is always someone that cares about u, always!

thank you. i grew up with Autism and it was hard on my family, at the age of 3 i had my own language that my older sister and one of my uncles understood, i was 3 when my family for the first time and it was a song for our dog, my mom was so happy cuz we where told i wouldn't talk, and around that age i started to love super heros, horses and i started to understand why my dad wasn't around and why my family said he was over seas, and my dog became my rock for me to lean on but into 2015 December 13th he passed away and it hit me hard...

I don't know about everyone else's experiences with Autism I know everyone is different. My son is about to be 5 in 2 months and this song fits him and myself. I love that you are able to capture it in such a beautiful way and so honored that you researched Autism before writing it so you knew what it all was about and did not just go by stereotypes like some people in society do. I hear so often "He don't look autistic" or "can you get him to talk" it is hard some times and nice to know people out there still take the time to learn about something before talking or singing in this case. I love the song so much I went and bought it on iTunes God Bless You!!

I will never get tired of sharing this song. I have twin nephews who show signs of autism (although they have not been officially diagnosed, their neurologist say they show signs of Autism), I sent their mom, my sis-in-law, this song and she sent me a message saying how she listened to this while she was at work and couldn't hold back her tears because this song speaks in volumes! She is very very thankful as am I for something so beautifully written and for something that just gives anyone who is in the same situation HOPE that loving someone who is in the spectrum doesn't mean that it's all bad. Anyone in the spectrum may be different but they are NOT less than others. Until then, we'll get by.

@littleautibatsfantasybooks7593
dear jhonny orr band: I'm going to rant because I'm so furios. this song is highly offensive. I am autistic and being autistic is not at all "like a prison". its a gift. A wonderful and beautiful gift that should be celebrated. its a variation in neurology and should not be researched prevented or cured but instead should be celebrated and encouraged just as all types of neurology should be celebrated and encouraged. I have value and my autism is not separate from me but rather a crucial part of my identity. something that makes me special and beautiful. there is nothing wrong with being neurotypical just as there is nothing wrong with being autistic, or having adhd or brown hair or blue eyes. autism allow me to see the world in a different way and this is not "painful". the only reason autistic people suffer is because the world would rather look at us as diseased or broken rather than different and special. the world refuses to make accomodations to let us be who we are and frankly its disgusting. yes I am verbal but sometimes I am non verbal. I am not diseased or broken, missing or wrong, I am autistic and proud. STOP making autism out to be a bad thing, an illness, or some sort of monster when its not. maybe instead of us having to change for you maybe YOU could change a little to accommodate US! ive worked with autistic kids and am autistic myself and quite frankly its usually the parents who need therapy more than the kids. god the laundry list of ignorant complaints. parents who are willing to almost go broke to make their kid appear to be something they are not but who then complain they don't have money for their childrens basic needs or an extra 30$ to buy their child a tablet. "oh my child cant talk, he/she is non verbal and its so awful" gee heres an idea how about you buy a tablet and put an app on it so your child can communicate that way? " i cant put an app on a tablet becaue I have no internet" you know that timmie coffee you get every day? guess what timmies/ mcdonalds and your local library have? FREE WIFI!"my child only likes to communicate with sign language and I don't know it "well gee maybe you should learn. take a class or get a free book online or from the library or online at somewhere with free internet" my child prefers to communicate with an ipad but I cant afford it." ok, get one second hand or get a cheap tablet online for less than 30$!!! cant afford that either? draw a grid of symbols on a piece of paper and let them point to what they want to communicate. cant afford paper? well if you cant afford a piece of paper then you have bigger problems."My poor child is always stimming" "news flash! as long as stims are not self injurious they are a GOOD THING! its how your child calms down, processes their world, expresses their emotions and news flash it feels good! you ever tap a pen or twirl your hair? YOU STIM TOO! and on top of that so your childs stimming looks different. "people always stare at us" GET OVER IT!... its insane. I'm so happy my family has always loved and let me be exactly who I am and has never forced me into any kind of therapy if I didn't want to. they always loved and supported me and when I went in search of I diagnoses they supported me and even after they loved me and when I explain something to them the listen learn, and accommodate themselves for my needs. if your not willing to be selfless for the people and children you love then wtf are you doing having kids to begin with? you don't deserve these beautiful, incredible people in your life. it just always amazes and infuriates me. get off your lazy ass, stop making it about you because its not and start changing to accommodate your autistic family member instead of making them change to accommodate you!!"

As the parent of a child on the spectrum, I had a little difficulty with the prison analogy, but in a way it makes sense. It is and can be a struggle from both the child and parent perspective. However, my child is not broken, he does not need healing, he needs understanding and patience. I think you captured the love between parent and child quite well and I thank you for that. He is who he is and I love him with my whole heart.

Thank you for sharing that with me. I agree, as I'm learning more and more about this, I wrote it for one friend with 2 children that has autism. I wrote from her experiences so it's directed toward her love and her struggles as well as her kids actions and struggles and her prayers that she's prayed over the past few years. At this point we're just hoping that it will raise awareness and acceptance. Thank you again for sharing.

This is BEAUTIFUL, Johnny Orr Band!!! I have known WAY too many families with Autistic children (of varying spectrum) over the years. The love in these children and their willingness to please others is amazing! And, yes, it is sometimes difficult to understand that (for instance) - the reason he is pinching me is because he is SO VERY excited to see me and he doesn't want me to leave. In reality, how precious is the thought?! It doesn't perhaps coincide with the action in our minds, but it did in his! Understanding, patience and redirection... and LOTS of love and ((HUGS))! THAT is what these children need and deserve! Thank you, JRB for bringing this to light!!!

I was humming a turn in my head when I remembered this song and started breaking down crying remembering this song. I got diagnosed with autism at a very young age (7) and didn't understand what was so different about me. I got bullied for it when I didn't understand what it was like to be autistic. Why I was in these special classes, why I had weekly social worker meetings, but after one of my science teachers did a lesson on autism, I understood. Than the media likes to contradict on what causes autism. Now here we are in 2021, post covid for some of us and I'm getting ready to celebrate my 1 year anniversary of my heart surgery and I feel like this song spoke to me with that. I'm gonna be 28 years old, over 2 decades of the autism diagnosis and one year post arterial septal defect. This is one song that speaks volumes beyond the target audience

I stumbled upon this and i hate this song with a passion. I have autism and other neurodivergent stuff like dyslexia and dyscalcuia. My autism isnt a prison and i dont want a cure. What i was is understanding, kindness, compassion and acceptance. Telling people that having autism is a prison is horrible. Yes it can cause challenges but it also has given me positives for example im really empathetic and good at listening. I cant emote well but i use my words. I just cant believe this song is out here.

I just want to say how great I find this song. My son is 6.5 years old and has Classic/Severe Low-functioning Autism. He is nonverbal. This song fits him to a T. And I wish more people would understand that this type of song is not saying that all people with ASD are "broken". More light needs to be shed on the fact that for some people, like my son, Autism is a nightmare and not just a personality trait. I can't count how many times I've told someone my son is autistic and they say "oh I know _____ who's autistic. you know they're really geniuses" and then they meet my son and they're like "oh....*awkward silence*". It breaks my heart to see my son struggle with so much. He has numerous meltdowns everyday and after he calms down, he comes to me and cries his heart out while looking at me and his eyes are so sad as if to say "why is this happening to me?" Anyway, thank you for this song. It's like I can hear my son through your lyrics. I love it.
