I was in a laid back, '70s kind of mood tonight as I find myself often these days. England Dan & John Ford Coley was one of those great duos that defined a sound and vibe for a moment in time. Whenever I hear any song by them, I'm quickly transported to a simpler time in my life. I didn't always understand the meaning in the lyrics back then, but my soul seemed to get it nonetheless. This is one of those songs. It is about a couple who have to part too often for their liking, and wonder when the time will come when they don't have to say goodbye again. It's a song about romance, but as I contemplate some recent losses dealt to family and friends, I sense it has a deeper application. Saying goodbye to the people we love is never easy whether it be for a week, a month, or for the rest of our lives. Regardless of the length of time of our parting, there is a hope in the soul of every person that there will come a day when we never have to say goodbye again. I believe there is such a day for those who trust in our Maker and Redeemer. Colossians 1:13
