I lived in Auckland in the 1980's, and De Bretts was a pub, which they converted into a boutique hotel, and it is still going strong it seems. Yes the "lolly cake" is a favourite childhood treat, made from marshmallows and crushed malt biscuits, and coated in coconut.
Many thanks for that. Yes, we met a lady who used to visit the De Bretts pub. She said it was one of the most popular spots. It was probably the best hotel we've ever stayed and still has two lovely little bars.
