Their 40th Anniversary tour starts this week in Columbia, SC. I remember watching this repeatedly on The Box trying to get moves down, and running up my grandparents phone bill lol. This is my second favorite group right behind J5. The success they have had individually and as a group, no one will ever come close to that
All modern boy bands that have had success throughout the 90s and 2000's are all based on new edition. New kids on the block, nsync backstreet boys ,One direction at all the K-pop groups are all patterned after New edition. They are the blueprint for all of those groups.
My BF claims this is the song he was listening to that confirmed how he felt about me lol. "If It Isn't Love" is the lead single from NE's fifth album, Heart Break (1988). The song became the biggest hit from the album, peaking at #7 (their first top 10 hit following Bobby Brown's departure) and hitting #2 on the Hot Black Singles chart. Its chart performance and well-received music video garnered the group their first, and to date, sole nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The song and video is also notable for being the introduction of Johnny Gill as a new member of NE. Please react to NE - "Can You Stand the Rain" and "Hit Me Off."
When New Edition was in a bit of a slump, they were asked to do a song for the movie 'Dragnet' called 'Helplessly in Love'. That song was written and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. I remember hearing that song and thinking it was a good sound for them...Jimmy and Terry must have thought so, too, because they basically took New Edition to finishing school with the 'Heartbreak' album, a great series of songs/stories about the turbulence of transitioning from Boys to Men (yeah, they took their name from the last song of the album). Do yourselves a favor and go listen to the whole album from start to finish...there are other gems on the album like 'N.E. Heartbreak', 'Can You Stand the Rain', "I'm Coming Home" and "Boys to Men" and you'll have an even better appreciation for the work that was done to turn a group on the cusp of ending to the solo powerhouses of Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, and BBD (Bell, Biv, Devoe)...all based on the success of Heartbreak and the genius of Jam & Lewis!
New Edition is my own 2nd favorite "boy band" of all time, and I love everything from what they did as kids, to solo projects by Johnny Gill or Bell Biv or even Ralph solo stuff. (NO not a bobby brown fan) they did so many amazing songs.
This wasn't quite the 90's yet, it was '88. At the time Bobby had been kicked out of the group and they were getting ready for the NE Heartbreak Tour. Ironically Bobby was part of that tour as a solo artist as well as Al B Sure.
This is 1988 very 80s of course 1989 being the last year of that magical decade for creative talented real music even 1990 and 1991 still 80s style of music carried over Imo 90s started in late 1993 early 1994.
They had a 2 year break before they released this album. The album before this one was Under The Blue Moon (1986) where they covered a bunch of doo wpp classics.
Met them at my bestie and i's 21st birthday llooonnnggg time ago. Bel biv devoe Bobby Brown and Ralph tresvant. This was before cell phones sadly but Ralph was super nice and Bobby was all over an icky white girl. Yes he was married to Whitney then. But what a great memory for a milestone of sorts ❤😂
New edition Started the new wave of "Boy Bands" in the Early 80s, they wore suppose to catch their big break, but their music producer said that they didn't translate to the white audience and they wore replaced with a white boy band called "New kids on the block"
