I would want to go ashore for a picnic and a beer.

We'd thought about it. But we were pressed for time due to the previous 2 days of bad weather.

Thank you for alllowing us to follow along! What a great trip i would love to add to mine someday. Last time I did it I was in a large vessel as the medic. How are you finding your tank lavels, fresh, black, ets with 3 persons on board?

Thanks for watching! I've got a ton of upcoming video topics to publish from our SE Alaska trip. But since you asked... Freshwater was readily available at most places. We have a 30 gallon black water tank. We usually get 10 days with 3 adults. For SE Alaska, it's more common to macerate overboard 3nm offshore. So rather than wait until the tank was near full, anytime we found ourselves 3nm offshore, we macerated overboard. Many places along our trip did not have pump outs. This in of itself will be in an upcoming video.

Dang, you got some galls. That ranger tug hull is about a quarter inch of fiberglass. Beautiful scenery. Thanks for the experience.

This is exactly what I would like to do once I retire…curious how long it took you to feel comfortable making a trip like this? I was USMC (ret) not Navy although spent 6 months on a WestPac…I am not a sailor…never had a large boat…what kind of training experience would I need to make a trip like this?

Unfortunately, I don't know how to answer your question. I started out planning my trip, creating an itinerary... but I grew tired of creating it and ended up throwing it away. Instead, I just spent some time looking at the maps, figured out where the fuel docks were, and I figured out what my fuel efficiency was to ensure I wouldn't run out of gas. I followed the rule 2/3 of a tank to get there.. 1/3 of a tank for reserve. Some days we cruised at 25knots, other days we cruised at 7 knots to conserve fuel and extend our range. The rest was just good seamanship. Track the weather, the tides and the currents through all the narrow channels. I found it easier to "head north" and take things one day a time. I'd figure out what tomorrow was going to be around 5 or 6pm the evening before. Knowing how to read the weather forecast was important. Having good connectivity via satellite was critical (I had Starlink so I could get a good weather forecast anywhere we were).

Great video. Loaded, what do you get as far as nautical miles per gallon at cruise? What is the slowest speed you can plane at? (In weather) Thanks!
@Letsgochannelsurfing
@Letsgochannelsurfing 8 месяцев назад
At 7 knots (hull speed) we are over 2.2mpg. That's really how we stretch our range. At cruising speed (12mph - 40mph) it depends... anywhere from 1.8mpg down to about 1.2 mpg.

I stopped by the fuel dock in Deer Harbor, WA, my own back yard, in the San Juan Islands... 2 weeks ago and they were at $6.25/gal. No need to go to Glacier Bay for expensive gas. Lol

Just found the channel... Amazing views! Got a question about the dogs though... do you have a way for them to potty when you can't get to shore?

Glacier Bay doesn't permit pets to travel o shore. We had to train our dogs to use a grass pad on the boat. Check out this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lInmnLFiOiA.html

More to come! We still have whale watching on our way back to Juneau, and then there's our trip to Sawyer Glacier, up Tracy Arm. That should be equally, if not even more spectacular than Glacier Bay. Thanks for watching!

Was it a little nerve racking navigating thru the ice-bergs?
@Letsgochannelsurfing
@Letsgochannelsurfing Год назад
Only when we smacked into one. Which we did several times. Even at Tracy Arm we had similar experiences. We have an upcoming video where we talk specifically about the icefields and icebergs coming out in the next few weeks.

I saw u use radar on? what type it is? hope it is not 4 kW one. We have just damaged ours , old type 4kW and looking for new edditions and probably will go for new Fantom 24x. pls tell more about yours and how u use it. can u see icebergs on radar, closer to the boat, sticking out of water? surface was like in a gals of water. i was told by salmon trollers, with Fantom they can find lost "super cruz" in 0.5m waves and up to 500m away (1500 feet). so your radar ON means u are trainining to understand what u see? also we think "overlay" does not allow u to see weak signal return and better is to split the screen, than u run into "scvreen too small" and the game starts where to put additional one

Thanks for watching and great questions! I'm going to be publishing a video specific to icerbergs which will include RADAR. I'm also going to be doing a bunch of videos this fall specific to the electronics. Garmin Chartplotter, sonar, RADAR, AIS, VHF... integration of all the systems. Tips and tricks etc... that I use. I run RADAR all the time, regardless of the weather. I'll turn "trails on" to spot smaller targets easier with overlay. Some icebergs do show up on RADAR as you'll see in an upcoming video. I run split screen most of the time, with dual RADAR ranges (1nm or closer, and 1nm or bigger). That gives me a close-up view, danger zone, and gives me a wide field of view of what's coming up ahead.

i think u will wear out the motor, as it is leisure use, not commercial. also in my case the garmin radar got broken because it got water inside. found on fault investigation. we assumed the water got in due to condensation over 4y and faulty gasket, so called big seal around. unfortunately equipment fails, when u need it, and never during boat storage :) so now we came to conclusion it is worth opening radar for inspection after each season and make sure the humidity did not build up 0.5 ltr of condensation inside the dome@@Letsgochannelsurfing

@@basanke I hope I don't wear it out. I run RADAR all the time on the boat.

@@Letsgochannelsurfing i hope u will shear if something went wrong... and i hope it is not 4kW old fashioned one... due to possible health issues. What model it is? Fantom or xHD?
