THIS IS THE MOST UP TO DATE VIDEO!
This is a Jess and I finally created the perfect alcohol inks! We have included the recipe below
Alcohol ink Measurements
1/2 oz 90% alcohol (or higher)
Blue- 6ml cyan ink
Magenta- 6ml magenta ink
Yellow- 6ml yellow ink
Black- 6 ml black ink
Red- 4 ml magenta + 8ml yellow
Green- 4ml yellow + 4ml cyan
Purple- 4ml magenta + 4ml cyan
Orange- 8ml yellow + 1/2ml magenta
1 drop of glycerin to each

Hi guys! It was my suggestion to use the alcohol based inks and I’m so happy you liked my suggestion! After watching this video, I also wanted to say that using Yupo paper, glass, or some other non-porous substrate works much better with the alcohol inks because instead of soaking in the paper you will be able to let it flow and mix and do some really cool effects with it. Try adding some sea salt on top of your design and let it dry. Metallic mixatives will also make really cool designs. I just read your reply to my comment yesterday then today I found this video. Thanks for the color recipe too!

I would like to see you guys do this using mica powders instead of ink in the alcohol to make metallic colors and to bring back the alcohol based ink again and use it on yupo paper and actually blow it around and see how well it mixes and blends as you add more alcohol and tip always start with a wet canvas so make sure you put the alcohol down first then add one drop of the inks and blow it around to see how far it will stretch without breaking down

Your colors are so brilliant! Have you tried using YUPO or another slick paper? The alcohol ink will flow and not be absorbed into the paper, just like if you used glass or ceramic tiles.

Thank you for doing the shoulder work of how to making your own Alcohol inks. One thing I don't understand is why you didn't use a paper such as Yupo to do your test on, it would of made a difference to the test outcome

After you use the ink on a glass, can you touch it after it dries (before you seal it) or will it still rub off?

I made inks using your previous method. But my ink doesn't seem to dry. I used 91% alcohol and the ink. One glass item the ink won't even stick to. Maybe it has some sort of coating? I've tried twice and water literally washes it right off. any recommendations?

I’m not sure we used glass with them and they worked fine? Maybe the room was to cool?

We have done alcohol soaked watercolor paper before, not sure what cartridge paper is!?

@@MakeShapeCreate Cartridge paper is mainly used to draw & sketch on. It's a thick paper not quite paper thickness and a the same time not quite cardboard! Like a smooth watercolour paper without the expense, it can be bought in pads. I'll have to look out for the alcohol paper video.

@@MakeShapeCreate People don’t really use that term in the US anymore. I’m old enough to remember when it was used! I believe cartridge paper is a term used in the UK or Europe for a smooth, heavy weight paper used for drawing and sketching. Not as heavy a paper as watercolor paper.

Ok I did the math and to round up it is between $1.20 & &1.50 a 1/2 oz., so maybe $2 for the whole bottle. I guess that is a savings. You can get ranger for about $3-4 on sale. Not as big of a savings I would like for the trouble of ordering and the mess I will make in the process. But you did the leg work for me. For that I’ll give you the kudos you definitely deserve! Oh I did not include the cost of the syringe, so it ticks up. Plus there are shipping costs, too.

Dumb ?, I have had no luck in finding a large black rock for an art project in my city (crazy, huh). Has anyone tried alcohol ink on an unpolished stone/rock? If you have, do you wash the porous rock first and allow to dry or keep wet, spray with the alcohol ink then let dry and then add a sealer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Lynn

So I tried purchasing alcohol inks and they wipe off too. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Once you put the ink on the glass (dollar tree) and it dries, if you touch it will it come off? Does it have to be sealed before you can touch it or should it be set once it dries?

You could seal it using a clear enamel or lacquer

Try using a quality ink, like Jacquard’s Piñata brand or Tim Holtz’s Ranger. I’ve had no trouble with these drying, but I did try making my own with some dried up water-based markers and they never dried. I think they use glycerin in them, which stays tacky.

Do you have a video where you actually use the ink you made (with the Epson ink, alcohol, and glycerine) in a resin project? I’d like to see how it works/reacts before I commit to buying the ingredients. Thanks for the recipe! I’m looking forward to trying it out myself if I can find a video of someone using it!😊

You are using regular paper so the ink is soaking in the paper. Try using glossy paper

I think you would have had a much better outcome if you had used the back of photo paper. Using normal paper or cardboard doesn’t work with alcohol inks because they’re much more porous and absorb everything. Many people use Yupo but I try and use as little plastic as possible. Please use a respirator as you are using TONS of isopropyl alcohol right under your noses and you’re breathing in all the fumes. It’s toxic. Well done for experimenting though.
