A very funny scene between Carter and O'Neill None of these clips belong to me, all copyright goes to MGM, no money or profit was made during the viewing of this video
Sam Carter: my role model. Literally. This woman is AMAZING. And I can't really imagine her as an actress playing the role...Carter is definitely a real character in my mind. XD
my dad watched this with me and immediately said something along the lines of "so when do they get together?" The chemistry is just so blatantly OBVIOUS
Ironic, really, since it was the most out-of-character scene that Carter ever had, and the producers, writers and Tapping herself all hate it in retrospect.
It wasn't terrible. It was unnecessary. It was virtue signally just a lot less than we're currently dealing with. This and the episode where Carter is taking capture by a bunch of mongols just goes to show how silly these kinds of statements are. REMEMBER the OLD Star Trek Episode with the 2 races who's faces are painted black and white, with the colors inverted on the other race? It's hammy, hand fisted nonsense. But it makes you feel good when you're writing it I guess.
I loveeee this scene!! Shows these two were going to be together at some point with their chemistry. You also should have added what happens a few seconds later when carter asks Jack if they are going to have to arm wrestle. I don’t know why ppl hate this scene, but I especially liked that considering they do “wrestle” 😏😏😏in a later episode.
"Just Because My Reproductive Organs are on the Inside instead of the Outside, doesn't mean I can't handle anything you can handle." Carter's defining character moment.
I have such mixed feelings about this scene. The chemistry between Jack and Sam is instant and great. If I don’t pay attention to the words, the subtext is very enjoyable. But the dialogue is stilted and awkward. The reproductive organs line is so terrible they even parodied it in 200. And I don’t think Carter would interrupt a superior officer so often, especially one she’s just met, and while she’s trying to make a good first impression. Carter is always respectful and careful to call O’Neill sir or refer to him by rank for the rest of the series, it’s weird that in their first meeting she’s so casual, borderline impertinent. On Jack’s side, it’s his men who are misbehaving, but he’s not keeping them in line, either. His distrust of scientists is a carry-over from the movie; then again he says in a scene before this one that Daniel earned his respect when he saved all their lives. So why does he still hold being a scientist against Carter? Regardless Jack is usually the first to object at racism towards Teal’c or sexism towards Carter, so it’s weird that he’s sort of condoning it here through his silence. But I think maybe he’s taking her measure, seeing how she’ll react to Kawalsky and Ferretti’s taunts as a test of her character.
Scientists.....those geeky guy, sorry....PEOPLE, who can walk into a, grab a stick of gum and some duct tape and make a bomb. I played one for 7 years and and I know everyone in this room is thinking "OMFG I'm doing a scene with MacGyver"
Also, her wrist was bent during the salute. At least her fingers were straight, which is something movies and tv shows often mess up. I rarely see a proper salute in any form of media unless that person actually was in the military and had it beat into them in boot camp.
Generally you don’t salute at all if you’re not wearing a cover. In either event, she would only need to report to the Sr most officer in the room. In this case, the General.
wow :D i started watching SG-1 from the middle of the series.. well sort of so I didn't know how sourish O'neill and Carter's relationship was back then :D thanks for the vid! :D
You cut it off right before the second part about a gazillion hours logged in enemy airspace and is that tough enough for you, or are we going to have to arm wrestle. It's better with the whole thing! :)
General Hammond:Which means she's smarter than you are colonel. Macgyver:I can jerry rig a nuclear reactor out of tinfoil some sticks and chewed gum. Its doubtful. General Hammond:Can't argue with the facts. Sorry captain you'll stay. Carter:😭
We can totally see how Carter's character has evolved since the first episode. She was like a new born in this military world and she didn't know how to earn respect. She was susceptible and had little self-control then. She was so young and clumsy. I like the way she evolved towards a more mature, reflective and down to earth (pun unintended) woman.
Good to have growth in a character, but it's unrealistic and not credible to portray an Air Force officer who has made captain and doesn't seem to know how to handle herself. Especially a female officer who undoubtedly put up with sexism to get there. She would have been a lot more seasoned and experienced than this scene shows. Poorly written scene.
@@LornaHartman I disagree to get Cpt you just have to be in 4years in every branch but the Marines, she's a researchers which is actually a job for USAF officers. Theres a good chance she have never been in the needed situation or received the training necessary to handle herself properly. I am a USN Lt., same rank as a Cpt in the AF, and I can tell you first hand how little training I had in such things theres far more on the job training and sink or swim training in our military than any civilian understands. Her not understanding that the previous mission was classified as a combat mission and women were not aloud in combat she should have known, and also by that should not have gone through now but Sg1 quickly abandons any premise of actually military for Macgyver in space so I overlook it.
Just rewatched this episode on Amazon for the first time in years. I noticed that they edited it allot. Removed Sam's line about being a woman, Kowalski's line about the naked blizzard, and replaced the old graphic for the milky way gates with the Pegasus version from SGA. What gives Amazon? Those were some important parts of the opening dialogue and general nostalgia. :(
They also edited a lot from the when the team first stepped out of the gate on Abidose, Carter puking, Carter introducing herself as doctor and not captain to Daniel and the ensuing retort from Jack. I stopped watching at that point, theres no point in watching it if amazons going to butcher every episode. I understood Hulu removing the nudity but editing character developing dialogue, NO.
Amazon did not edit it. The Stargate creators did. They hate this scene. They made their own final cut that changed some things. This scene is removed The harem and full nudity is removed (They never wanted it and it was pushed on them by showtime) There is a line where Kowalski says he didn't know Jack had a kid, which is bad with the canon established and fleshed out more that they were close friends. And I think Shanks as Jackson redubs some of his lines, Tealc as well. Shanks was trying more so to imitate Jamese Spader from the original film and Teal'c actor had yet to get his characters voice down I've gone back and checked myself on that last part and Shanks is not as noticeable BUT damn Teal'cs is. If you watch the episode on any streaming site, it will have the final cut as episode 1. So when you watch episode 2, which was not redubbed. Teal'cs voice is so much lower.
@@vepristhorn8278 ...........you know it's the creators who made all these changes. Streaming sites are using the new final cut over the original airing. many of those changes were made for continuity. The whole getting sick and puking after going through the gate was carried over for the movie, but then the creators of the show (who did not create the movie) decided to get rid of it, so then they could transition scenes much faster and have actinon sequences after going through the gate as often times the characters run through it and turn around with guns pointed at the gate. the Carter dialouge was hated by the whole show. Some other continuity issues were removed, like Kowalski not knowing of Jack's son. This is the Stargate creators making these changes.
season 1 they didn't know what they were doing yet. the only really amazing ones in season 1 are the ending, and tin man was okay. they're a little too in-your-face about the feminism in season 1 - it's _awesome_, but a bit forced. in later seasons it's still there and still awesome but not so awkward.
This scene has been extensively reedited in recent versions of this show. I remember this scene being a good character introduction for Carter. The newer cut make absolutely no sense.
Hmm, I see there are mixed feelings about this scene. It is true that it's out of character for Carter. But think about in this way: Carter has been studying and doing research on the gate for years. She literally memorized O'Neill's first mission report. This is like coming face to face with the goal of her life's work. It's a huge moment for her. She is not going to stand by and let what appeared to be misoginy in the way of her goal. Even if that means being a bit out of line with a superior officer. Also, you have to remember, this was in the latter part of the 90s. The awareness that is today regarding feminism was not much there during that time. And we all know how fierce Sam is. That is why she doesn't hesitate to "fight back" against gender stereotypes when confronted with them. And it's not so out of character. She is standing her ground in a polite, formal manner without being rude or insubordonate, backed up by General Hammond as well. She is making a statement, that she is not some blonde bimbo, easy target. Afterward, throughout the series, once Jack and the others win her trust, she is less on the defensive and more like her usual self. When you think about it, this is a very realistic scene, which shows how much women were still used to mistreatment during those times. During today as well.
Yes, exactly! I was in the military in the late 90s and military men very much still talked openly about how they thought females had no business in the military. I used to put on a tough $h!t act as well, in the military, only showing my very soft side to those I trusted. And I had never seen SG-1. It was just how some of us females coped in an openly misogynistic world.
But it was made even funnier with the callbacks to it in later episodes Moebius and 200 which raised the whole thing to a 5 out of 5 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p6fgZP7jP4o.html
@sharonfavs ... this is so not Carter i find it annoying the way they portrayed her in the pilot that attitude of being out to prove herself and so defensive annoys me, i think she way better when shes just a part of the team instead and not so defensive, amanda tapping stated that herself
I don't think people understand the context. Women in the military.... up to the late 90s... were not treated, professionally, with the same respect as men.
Huh? I'm not sure I understand you. Saying that line doesn't make someone smart, it makes them sound self-righteous. That's my point, Amanda Tapping managed to make the character her own, and thus, better. The writers of Stargate, while I love them, are terrible when it comes to writing women (they even made fun of this in episode 200).
This has nothing to do with you being a woman. I like woman. I just have a little problem with scientists. And THIS is why O'Neil is the best fucking officer in the entire SG Comando.
well she needed to establish herself with the guys since they were all kind of acting like she's not up to it... I wouldn't say this is how she normally acts as we see when she gets to know the team better but in this moment I can understand her acting that way. It was a reaction to their attitudes...
don't forget - this was only the pilot and the cast were on their best behaviour! If this was a later episode I bet you anything that Amanda would've tried to change this scene lol.
@@victorselve8349 and the scene was changed. Amanda hated it. And the writers in hind sight hated it. Hence they changed it for the final cut that came out years later
@@bluescluessuperagent they also made fun of it later in a timeline where Carter worked at a university and not for the military with her career basically being on a permanent hold
@@victorselve8349 did that happen? I don't remember all the details of that timeline but there was another timeline where Carter and O'Neil got together cause Carter never joined the air force. the one where they world is attacked by the Goa'uld and her and Kowalski come over to the main timeline and they get the Asgard contact info and go back to their world to get the Asgard to save them I remember how alternate Carter was so baffled to think main Carter thought her joining the air force had such an impact on saving the world lol (which it honestly did)
@CharlieBlue Haha. "missplaced...apostroph...as I've just did...thereofre..." One of my pet peeves is poor grammar and spelling in general, hence my comment. :]
ahh, but by not making them stop, and letting Sam say her piece, he allows the men an opportunity to gain respect for her. If she had to "hide" behind the general they wouldn't respect her at all. And it's funny
basically this scene was sort of out of place. The actress hated it. The writers themselves hated it in hind sight. It's been since changed for the final cut and the scene plays out much better from both Sam and the men's perspective. Carter comes in, and all the references to her are about her being a scientist and not a woman. also much shorter.
i think they brought up how stupid this was in a later episode in some alter reality timeline or something. like "just beacuse my reproductive organs are on ethe inside and not the outside doesnt mean that i cant do what you can, god that sounds so stupid" XD is what she said.
Carter was a disrespectful (to a senior officer), pompous, ass with a chip on her shoulder right from the start. I would have fought hard to keep her off my team. And, as we know from later episodes, she was always five minutes behind the game, forcing everyone to repeatedly wait for her. Couldn't salute properly either.
I WONDER if he acted like this way towards her because he didn't want her on his Team cause he KNEW he was going to END up having strong feelings for her, witch I'm not so sure later on that it was ALL acting on Richard Anderson side..I have listened and watched video's of Anderson/Tapping and the guy that played Daniel and of course someone asked if Anderson & Tapping ever in REAL life while Filming the show ever dated and you could tell just the WAY Anderson Acted and talked, I wonder how much on the Show was his REAL feelings that weren't just acting !!!??? And I'll say it 100 times you can only Act so much you can't fake certain things and there JUST Human people can FALL in LOVE !!! And I believe Anderson & Tapping Really cared for each other maybe even loved each other, there another Hollywood couple I wished that would be a REAL couple!!!! Just like Gillian Anderson & David Duchovy.... When you have a certain amount of Chemistry you shouldn't waste that and when you have it in the start of the Series just like I believe these 4 Actor/Actress did from the Start they worked together for 9/10 years off and on well when you have that strong of a Chemistry you can't tell me MOST of the 9/10 that doesn't move onto LOVE !!!
I'm glad that the "The Final Cut" got rid of the "I Am Woman Hear Me Roar!" speech. So out of place and unnecessary. Also out of character for Carter once you get to know her in subsequent episodes/seasons.
Ugh. Terrible dialogue, not to mention blatantly illegal in the military. If this had been the way Carter acted in the rest of the series I'd have hated the character. No one cares that she's a woman, and the rest of the characters shouldn't either.
actually anyone smarter then the average youtuber would, the average youtuber iq barely break 100 SAMs was what 180+? from what I read the videos I watch the Iqs here range from 70-100 MAYBE now you will have some VERY smart people now and thne but most are average at best ME nothing more then average
If you think this is bad you should see the reedited version. Its total garbage. At least this establishes Carter as an expert of the Stargate as well as introduces the character as a no nonsense type of person. The latest edit sounds like Carter and Oniell are having two different conversations.
