The words are actually Carl Sagan's since he authored them. He also believed we should cherish each other for the very reason that intelligent life is so rare and precious. We're likely not alone, but the Drake Equation that uses math to postulate that their MUST be intelligent life out there doesn't consider the problems put forth by the Fermi Paradoxes on why those intelligences might disappear quickly, or never develop to the level of interstellar travel. If we did find evidence of extraterrestrial life, we'd need to consider the viewpoint of Edward Harrison who said that a successful alien species would likely be a superpredator, as are humans, and wipe us out upon discovering our existence.
Of course we're not alone. That shouldn't even be a question. The universe is too big for that not to be a fact. The real question is if we'll ever observe the proof.

@Mee Acownt lol researchs are already published that prove life in harshest of environments. Basically environments where we thought life could not possibly exist, not even micro-organisms. But in one such environment micro-organisms were literally alive. And that significantly improves the probability that beings are actually habitating other far off planets. These beings have not to be smart/intelligent life. They can be just micro-organisms on other planets. And if these micro-organisms have been habitating any planet for billions/trillions of years then there's very very high probability about them being a smart life.

I'm a pilot with a thousand hours of flying and have worked in around airports for years. In Nov. 2016 just after sunset, I had a mind-blowing experience in Eastern Europe. While waiting for a bus I watched an aircraft 2 miles out and tracking a highway est. alt. 3,000 ft. moving at est. 70 knots (slightly faster than traffic) it was flying towards me at my one o'clock position. (winds calm less than 5 knots) It had a large red position light and was strobing. At One mile the single strobe light reveals a partial circular structure. Half a mile I realized the red port side position light is on the wrong side, no engine or prop-wash sounds, silent. My brains did a flip. Almost at the three o'clock position, I could see it was about to enter the clouds. Directly in front of the craft, the clouds revealed 3 or 4 almost invisible to the make eye, translucent disks about the size of a full moon that were scanning the clouds something like radar... It was not an optical illusion, lens flare, or Venus. Whatever it was it wanted you to believe it was an aircraft...it was not.

Thirty years ago, while teaching at a UK University I had a fine colleague who had served in the airforce where he worked in the Control Tower. He told me about a feature that suddenly appeared on his screen that travelled in at a speed of 18 thousand MPH. It stopped for several minutes then travelled away in a different direction at a similar speed. Although it did not return he had other comparable experiences that he reported but that were not followed up as far as he knew.

in 1952 We were traveling from Colorado to Los Angeles, my Aunt and I stopped to make a potty place on the side of the road. We went up a ridge and was going to squat down and we saw a UFO on the ground. No one was out of it No foot prints disturbed around it but it was huge. My Aunt was working in an aircraft plant and she was SCARED. We ran back to the car and on the radio was a report of a sighting of a UFO. I truly believe in them. I will never forget that sight.
I think the scariest thing is to realize we are literally the only planet in the universe with life on it. That would bring so many more questions tbh. I honestly hope we do find life near us.

being alone in the universe is very comforting to a majority of religious people on this planet. Not being alone in the universe is comforting to non-religious people. So either way, it's not terrifying for everyone, but many people will be crushed one way or the other.
It's very simple actually: our very own presence is evidence that life exists in the universe. We prove that life can and does exist in space and even it is a very rare occurence, the probability of more life existing out there gets higher and higher with how infinitely large the universe is. The real question here is not if life exists out there, but if we or other lifeforms can ever bridge the vast distance in between us before our civilizations end. :)
@James 179 Exactly. In order to meet, advanced civilizations do not only need to be in reach of each other, but also exist at the very same time. Who knows, maybe there was intelligent life right around the corner a few million years ago, but it was wiped out by a collapsing star or another cathastrophic event, preventing us from ever encountering each other. I'm certain there is plenty of life out there, the stage is just very large and we don't meet in time.

Reading through these comments, it sounds like everyone’s argument is the size of the universe is proof of life, but that is simply not true. In fact it’s a mystery why if life does exist outside earth, why it seems to be hiding from our telescopes and other instruments. You would think we would see many galactic civilizations from earth right now. Also the other fallacy in the argument that aliens must exist due to the size of the universe is ignorant to the other side of the equation. Namely the origins and evolution of life. For all we know, the origin of life may be a rarer probability then all the habitable planets in the universe. We just don’t know. That’s not to mention all the other huge leaps life must make to get to intelligent beings. The bottom line is that the subject is incredibly complicated and nuanced, and while the night sky is vast and beautiful, there is still so much that remains a mystery and we can’t make any conclusions just yet.
We may not be dealing with a carbon life form. Inter-dimensional “life” forms may be based on something we know nothing of. The one “object” leaving a trail of gas? Or coming thru the fabric of time or dimension?

The civilizations that have been around longer than us must think of us when we find an isolated tribe in the Amazon. The technology difference is probably the same to that civilization.
If there's one thing to learn from astronomy, it's that there is no such thing as _unique._ See a phenomenon in one part of the sky, point your telescope at another part, you'll invariably see it there too. There is quite simply no reason to assume life should not be the same, or intelligent technological life.
The problem is that we dont how or why life arose on the surface of earth. So we can't extrapolate yet. We dont see it anywhere else in our system. It could still be a freak accident that wont happen again for a long time, like someone born with three heads. If it only happens once every 10 billion years, then we could be the first

Hence crop circles, cattle mutilations, abductions etc are all the works of these alien visitors. And, of course, it is these aliens that built the pyramids.🙄

Cattle mutilations are most likely done by sociopaths to animals that have already gone into rigor mortis and so little to no blood would be expected to flow from the wound. But at both sites there were footprint-like indentations, one had holes poked in the ground and the other had circles around it looking like suctuon-cup indentations. Human feet do not look like pokers or suction cups but humans can put on silly shoes to disguise the shape of their feet. As near as I can tell abduction stories all come off like lucid nightmares with lots of dreamlike stuff going on and chairs and operating tables that defy sense to sit in or lie on. I personally have seen one of them!! 2012 it was an orb and it was free flying all over up down side to side back and forth on a whim and was the height of a sky scrapper in the sky. What we're thinking of as aliens are interdimensional beings that a precursor to the space program made contact with. There are not what they claim to be! The disasters that are coming, they know about them, they could begin moving the population to safer areas but they want them wiped out so the people that are left will be more controllable.

We are significant proof of life existing in this universe and it absolutely exists elsewhere in many different forms of consciousness that is in the past, present and future all simultaneously. The cosmos is vast through many different dimensions and passages of time and there have been many who have existed before us and that will exist even after 100 billion years from now. Humanity is not alone, it’s just most of us choose to feel alone and believe it is reality which is all an illusion of the mind.

Even if there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, we will never find them and they will never find us because the distances are just too vast, even if we/they could travel at c, which is not possible.
I have actually seen 2 flying saucers on top of Estrella mountain in Phoenix Arizona and I have the footage and photography of them it was at night but you can see them clearly and they have some type of energy field around their craft.
Space is enormous. Most likely lots of other life exists but it too far away to ever connect with us. Our fastest spacecraft would take 75,000 years at full speed to reach the NEAREST star. Enormous.

"If you found large quantities of nitrogen dioxide *and could rule out natural causes* it might be a major discovery" Ruling out natural causes is a problem, is it possible to rule something out when there is not enough knowledge of that something existing in different circumstances not observed yet? I don't think natural causes can be ruled out, unless you get positive and direct evidence for alien civilizations. This is not an opinion of a scientific sort, rather, journalism.
