It's late summer, and although we are still selling flowers, we need to shift our focus to next year and start prepping our farm for the future. We have a massive order of perennials that will be planted in the bottom of our farm. The problem is that we aren't even close to being ready to plant there, and before we can do anything to prep the area, we have to get rid of some invasive trees that will only cause us problems in the future. So this week we try to do it all, go to markets, sell lots at the roadside stand, and make a bunch of progress on getting the farm ready to plant those peonies. Will we be able to do it all, or will we run out of energy first? You gotta watch to find out!
__________
Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

The shots of the trees falling were incredible. No wonder you were exhausted. All the angles and the drone shots. It probably took longer to set up the shots then to cut the trees. Awsome video. Vintage "You Can't Eat the Grass" unique, beautiful, engaging and fun. The flowers were magnificent. So much color. I can't understand how people can pass them by at the farmer's market. Good luck on the new priorities! More more more peonies. 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🌲🌲🌲🌲💚💚💚💚💚💚

Long range weather is supposed to be warmer than last year. Hopefully that's close to being true. If you rent a chipper you get some material for pathways on the farm. The larger branches could be cut and used to border a compost pile. Or make "rustic" stools for the kids to use..

That’s the amazing thing about work, sometimes something you put off and dreaded takes much less time than you thought it would and results yield more greatly than you anticipate. When I get in that funk I say to myself.. every ONE thing I do is one less thing to be done later. It’s small motivation but sometimes it works. 🤣 It’s sooo easy to let yourself get caught up in how bad your joints are going to ache at the end of the day, or how whatever you do will need to be repeated eventually. But sometimes we hit on a thing that inspires and surprises us immensely. And salt water baths are amazing.

Time marches on for all of us, but you're clearly still a pro, Ian! Putting in all those peonies is going to pay dividends for a long time! I have questions about other shrubs and perennials (my personal faves in the garden) and whether they would work for your cut flower farm. Yea, nay, or maybe someday? Roses Lilacs Delphiniums Lavender Lily of the valley
@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
Roses - Only home garden Lilacs - I have a hedge but don't water it, so it's sad, lol Delphinium - big part of the 2024 plan Lavender- too many locals grow it to make it worth the money, but there is also lots I could buy if needed for a good price Lily of the valley - the Okanagan it too hot and too dry for them to really thrive, but for that season I'm interested in eventually getting hellebores if I can figure out some shade

Maybe you could add some berries of some kind into your bouquets if you have something growing in the area that’s not poisonous to people or pets. Perhaps that might be something to keep in mind for the future. Something unusual to catch the eye.
@YouCantEatTheGrass

Unfortunately there isn't any good berries that are available for foraging locally. Rose hips can do okay, but even they can drop inside the house from the heat.

excuse my curiousness, but have you thought of moving some of the spring prep to the late fall? I know by the end of the season you guys are exhausted; however, in November could you not do a few things? for sample, use the crop and drop method on the fields; prepping the seed trays. I just thing if did some minor things in late fall early winter, it would make the spring easier on the two of you.

Big bbq and few drinks afterwards. It actually was a lot of fun and we would obviously reciprocate the favours helping them back. Makes those tasks so much easier/faster and a great way to socialise and get ideas. Good peeps love to help out and just a good ole bonding experience.

You don't need permits to take down trees here. But you are responsible for any damage caused. So, to remove trees near our house or power lines, we would hire a professional service used to removing trees in urban area. We took these down, not because we needed to, but because they will come down in the future (due to age or development), but in the future, they will cause damage to the peonies we will plant. This just makes everything easier and safe for our peony investment

@YouCantEatTheGrass
@YouCantEatTheGrass Год назад
They are size and price comparable to our local cheap grocery store bouquets - but they last 5+ days vs the 2 from the shipped in flowers. I'm sure no one would complain if they were twice as big, and I agree, that they would look better, but I wouldn't be able to afford to sell them then. We have plans to offer more higher end stuff next year though, like always having the $40 bouquets available from the stand, and offering vase arrangements more often
