I guess the space looks so tight….like an 88” couch will overwhelm the space, hugely. I’m thinking a huge Bay window across the end of the room, showing the Tiny House in all its character. Or maybe two slider doors across the front to show off your view from the inside, too? Open them to the patio totally…..there are even fold-back doors that would open up the entire space, potentially…..open the whole width! Fabulous! And if that room has to be just a full terrace, in the end, those big slider doors can move to that Big Build you look forward to. Voila! And all of the install you can do-it-yourself!

Have you considered placing the sliding door closer to the green door? It would reduce the "hallway" that you would have between the 2 doors. You would walk out of the green door area, turn right and be able to exit immediately. It allows for more usable inside space. 💖

Yes Tara but people live in Tiny Homes and they’re cozy inside when needed and family time and run free outside the rest of the time! The boys don’t know any different! Thayer happy now! Teen abets need their own rooms but that’s the best scenario if they can.

Oh my gosh! I LOVED your acting out your visions of life in the new little house! Complete with correcting the children every time you walked by. (Reminds me of my days as a schoolteacher!) The sound effects were fabulous! You both have such a fun outlook on life. Happy Wednesday all.

You guys NEVER FAIL to make me smile!! Your channel is so my favorite! ❤ Your role playing cracked me up! Before we built our house, our family of four (and pregnant with our third), lived in a 672 square foot mobile home. We had built a living room addition to add space. That room was also our girls' play space. After building our large house for a family of eventually seven, our girls would often say how much they missed our tiny home!! HOME is FAMILY, not a building! Love every single moment of your family journey. Thank you for sharing your lives with us!!! 😊

Loved the "ramped up" Vivaldi music accompanying the trench digging! 💛 So much to think about with this project. Take your time John, instant gratification lies in gardening and smaller tasks. When my children were little they only really used their lovely rooms full of toys to sleep in. They perfered my attention to anything in their rooms. The outdoors was where they loved to play. I think your boys love the outdoors and they are going to love your covered outdoor space more than their rooms, as well. All of that being said is to say the size of their rooms really doesnt matter as much as your outdoor space and kitchen space.

That was my experience. When we moved into a bigger house, they still wanted to play where I was. The outside was their favorite place to be. You have to remember how it is now, will be different in 5 years. Time does go quickly even if it doesn't feel that way now.

Please just be grateful Tara for what you have. I know it’s hard when you have little ones and very little space. My boys are in their 30s now but when they were Sawyer and Crusoe’s age I was in a homeless shelter and had to walk the streets all day with them until 5pm when I could go back to my room. I would try make each day as much fun for them as possible. Always look for the things each day to be grateful for. A grateful heart cannot be sad at the same time. ❤❤

John I know I am just a spectator to parts of the Newby's life story but I sat almost as a proud mom totally dazzled at your go get it spirit! You are a modern day Renaissance Man...willing in the process of overcoming obstacles and while working toward family goals you lean on your strengths...constantly learning and plastic enough to know that you do not know it all but willing to work through the process learning as you go along....such an excellent example of manhood, husband hood and fatherhood Tara you won the lotto...as did he ...such a great team! Hello from Colorado! I'm sorry the weather isn't cooperating with John's efforts. At least it isn't snowing! 🤐 You will do what every parent does when you get fed up. "Oy! Take it outside!" Children are so amazingly adaptable. Hand them a snack and tell them to go play in the tree house. This they will do going in and out of the house twenty times to grab toys, drinks, outerwear, and hugs while letting all the heat out because shutting a door isn't necessary to little boys. LMAO! Enjoy the building. We'll watch with anticipation and joy! Blessed Be!

Solution: Build a cover over the walkway to the tiny house. Partition off your editing space so kids can't touch anything and then make the tiny house the boy's extended play area. Guests? No problem- buy a large Teepee or Yurt and let guests do some glamping on John's lawn.

John will hate me saying this but I think you have to look at the amount of space the furniture will take up and see what’s left in terms of floor space for two growing boys. You have so many beautiful outdoor spaces why not make the extension as large as possible. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

Hello Newby family. The extension seems to me to be like an English Conservatory …… I know whatever you build it will be great. I must tell you there is a Dutch guy “ Martijn Doolaard” renovating two cabins in the Italian Lower Alps, on Utube. It’s a must see. The wood fire place come oven, heats the whole place, looks fantastic… No condensation or soot….so many improvements to see… thought you might get some good ideas from him……even his self feeding chicken Paraphernalia in the coop is great for when he goes away for short periods of time. He also built his own of the grid solar system……. Plumbed his own water for cabins & gardens…. No outgoing cost…… it’s truly amazing. Anyway I hope you all have a wonderful Easter. Stay well & Happy. Loved the sounds of kids playing when you were checking out the layout of the area you are adding. I thought that a school bus of students had just gotten off near your place - it sounded so real. Also, the sliding door sound was hilarious.

Concerning your “lmpermeable space” - building up instead of out saves some of that. Two stories gives the same square footage in half of the impermeable space. Connecting two second stories over a driveway, for instance, also increases liveable space without impacting the ground at all. Or build a second story extension over the courtyard for more liveable space. I could imagine two small bedrooms overhanging the courtyard supported by columns with maybe a steel ring beam - you are building ABOVE already existing impermeable space.

Coming from a mom of twins living in Canada where the weather gets decent around May, so I get the stuck indoors thought. We bought a house that had a sunroom. The thing was well built but they had issues with condensation and the windows were leaky but we loved it when my girls were under 6 yrs. Then it was a storage for unwanted toys and basically unused. 2019 we did an expensive Reno, we removed it and made it part of the house not like an add on as it was previously. Now it’s a dining space. We have tall trees so it looks like we are in the trees and the light is awesome esp on those cloudy snowy days. So here’s my advice don’t just plan for little boys plan for the grown up boys or a space where you can open the doors on warm dry days with the view to the outside space. Where you can dine there when it’s rising and storming too. Just think a bit about long term, multipurpose room and accommodate different weather.

I've been meaning to say this for a while. Your editing of these videos is superb! Having watched a few others elsewhere, I have so often wished that they could have broken up those long half hours of watching someone move a wheelbarrow or stack wood with the sort of breaks that you utilize. Although the extension does not offer you a huge living space, it is merely a temporary lodge. To gain more livable space, you would have to create a larger extension, by building beyond the rear vertices of the stone house, which would inevitably add costs and work. I have to tell you-I would be amazed if I saw a chicken lay a blue egg! I know there are different colored eggs laid by different hens but they would be SO EXPENSIVE here if we even had them! I would love to be able to get them! Even brown eggs (very common) are more expensive here!

Cold here and windy. Blue egg. How sweet little children are. 💙 My lady made it for me. I love it. When my daughter was 2 1/2y/o. She comes runny down the hallway, saying very proudly, "Mom, listen, my butts burps. Listen, She was so sad when she couldn't do it more. She's 35 You're doing great. I'm proud of both of you . Love the imaginary part, that had me laughing. One day when your boys are older, maybe with kids and grandkids of their own, they will share these videos of the grand and great grandparents and think how great you both were and cherish this home you made for them.

The weather does not spoil the boys fun does it , I am amazed at the versatility of johns talents he saves you both so much money by doing these jobs himself . John you wear your ear protection but why oh why do you not wear your breathing apparatus when cutting through concrete your poor lungs .

I agree with Tara, inside space with furniture and kids a little tight if you can push back in rear 4ft+ it would really open it up with usable floor space. And retain your front porch to have coffee kids playing if it’s raining.

I'm not sure where we'll be heading this year. We did go to Gran Canaria for the week last October. We flew across Portugal on our return to the UK. I thought of your homestead when it was announced by the captain that we were flying over Portugal🥰

This is certainly a major undertaking for John to tackle on his own. Everything he’s worked on has been well done, so I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead…maybe there’s a local contractor who can give you a hand from time to time! And I always love seeing the boys…my favourite part! Our sons are now 49 and 51 - blonde hair and blue eyes - so Crusoe and Sawyer remind me of years gone by. Happy building 😊.

Since the house you're working on is just a "temorary home" until you build your forever home; I recall words my mom always said: You can put up with anything life throws your way as long as you know it's not forever" That seems to fit your situation as well. Hello Tara, Jhon, Crusue and Swayer, I am a regular viewer of your videos and a big fan of your entire journey, I have followed you since your very first chicken, the one that chose you to ride in the caravan. Do you remember? That was very funny. I feel that if I had met you before becoming a mother I would have been a better mother, I learned from you to see life from its most beautiful side. I truly think you are an inspiration and a source of love❤. I've never traveled but I have the feeling that one day I'll meet you on the street and run to hug you because I also live in the North of Portugal in the city of Galo, I'm Portuguese. I've never commented on any of your videos but today I felt like I really wanted to give a tip on your new build. Have you considered opening the window next to the green door and turning it into a door and the new annex room having just one large window on the front and a small one on the side of the tiny house? just as you don't have to leave space in the hallway, you gain more area. I hope I'm helping and not complicating your ideas any further. Much love to you ❤ and funny that at this point I don't need to wish you a good egg hunt🐰 for your children as Crusue and Swayer already hunt them every day🤣😍😘

Have you considered the bi fold doors to really open up the space for indoor outdoor living? I know they are expensive, but maybe John can make them 😂 That will also give you a much bigger space for entertaining

John and Tara, your unobstructed view of valley and mountains is where the sliding doors are now. From the main house you will be coming into a decent sized room for family time. No need to rush from one door to the next. Also, where many doors converge becomes an awkward space to navigate; especially with little ones. I vote for leaving plans 'as is'. You will need the width of porch ( sunroom) because if you are out there the boys will be as well. Maybe small quarters, but not cramped quarters.
