Besides the better price one of the biggest selling points for me is the same behaviour among the different SP colors. As much as I like contrast, their different behaviours is driving me crazy!
I've heard it surmised that GW hadn't really set out to produce a single paint line, but instead had bundled together a number of disparate paint formulas they had been working on into the same range. The result being inconsistency. Unlike Army Painter's SpeedPaints, or Warcolours's Antithesis Paints, which were designed from the ground up to be a competitor to Contrast Paints. And, therefore, to do what Contrast was marketed as doing, whether all the paints in the Contrast line were built for it or not.
Hi I haven't seen green stuff games in a while. Sorry I unsubscribed maybe a year back. Just checked and you've been making vids again. I'll resub & check your stuff out. Hope everything has been alright.
@@Tipsythomas hey! Yeah I don't blame you for unsubscribing I disappeared from a really long time but yeah I'm back so thanks so much for giving my channel another chance :-) hope you like what I'm doing now
Similar, no noticeable downside, half the price and already in a dropper bottle rather than a comedy tub. I mostly make my own with artist ink, matt media, thinner and flow improver, but if I wanted an out of the bottle paint to do a base colour on a whole army then these seem a no brainer. (mind I don't use contrast paint for base colours)
speed paint solved the coverage problem that contrast paints have especially over flat surfaces. the better finish is just icing can't wait to get these.
Every video I’ve seen on these speed paints has had the same results. Army Painter has delivered some inconsistent and often lackluster results in the past but these look fantastic! These appear to go alongside the AP washes as very high quality products.
So true, I'm not big on AP Paints or brushes, but I love their washes. I used to think GW was the wash/ink king but AP surprised me. I'm a HUGE fan of Contrast Paints but I'll admit I'm REALLY looking forward to getting Speed Paints.
Since I own a lot of older AP paints, I have to agree. BUT! They improved greatly over the last 2 years and I'm using them more and more. Besides AP I mostly use Scale 75 and Vajello and I have to say, in termysof quality the difference is negligible with the newer paints.
OMG, havent been painting miniatures for 7 months but I cant stop smile at this video and it makes my tummy tickle. Ive got 4 brandnew the thing minis to paint and Im about to go nuts. Thanx again for the info and the great way you show how the paint behaves.
I wasn't big on contrast paints early on, but I used them to paint the entire Marvel United kickstarter and now I'm in love. I have about half of the range and a couple hundred hours of experience with them. Your thoughts sum them up fairly well. If speed paint performs as you and other reviewers have seen, then I'll be getting the entire range eventually.
There are 5-8 pots of contrast that are really good as a go to for almost any painter’s toolbox. The range is a little hit and miss with coverage and how it applies to a model. Speed paints seem to cover and behave the same across any color that I’ve seen so far.
I am an Army Painter defender, so I'm happy to see that these paints are performing so well! I hate storing paint pots, so these being dropper bottles is also a big plus for me. I would love to see an airbrush comparison/more product reviews.
They look really good, especially for power armour but I'd be interested in seeing how they're used on more organic surfaces. I love contrast paints, but only on things like skin, fabric, leather etc. So it would be awesome if the AP paints are just as good at both.
These experiments really excite me. AP has a bit of loyalty from me for their price point, but contrast made painting so much easier when they released. Speedpaints give me a lot of hope that I'll be able to afford to paint more minis!
Extremely helpful - trying to understand how these things compare or even just some better description of contrast paints is great. Thank you for this video.
It took me time but I’ve really grown to love army painter tbh. I tend to just use whatever I have for colours and when someone bought me one of the starter kits from army painter as a gift I was hesitant to apply them on gw models but once I did I really enjoyed them. Will continue to use in the future just based on price point alone
I have found that putting a thicker oil wash over a model (especially one with a matt undercoat, so it has something to grip onto) in the same manner as a contrast paint, nets a very similar result. With a big upside that you can manipulate the paint for hours afterwards, so you can remove it where is it laid on too thick and can fix any pooling that occurred.
Very true, I've been enjoying this as well. Just have to be aware it works much better with translucent pigments, like what is used in the speed and contrast paints.
I have just found your page and find your work very clean and well done. I have switched over to contrast for speed painting. So this video was very helpful. Love your work....
Thank you so much for this demo. I have 100% avoided GW Contrast because I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to afford what I needed, and this video got me so excited about Speed Paints. By the way, I have been following you for a long time and you and your content is my favorite in this hobby. Your videos have helped me so much , and I am just really grateful for you. I plan to pony up and support in 2022.
Ultramarine blue vs. Cloud Blue seemed pretty conclusive because I don't want to have to thin down my paints if I can help it. Then I end up with far more consistent results when painting a whole unit. I get that you should thin your paints, and when using normal paint I do, but the whole point of Speed Paints is, well, speed, and getting good, consistent results, right out of the pot, is a baseline for whether or not the paint is worth using. Thanks for this very well constructed comparison. Now I want these paints even more than before. Seems like a no-brainer that no one should ever buy a Contrast Paint ever again.
Oh people will still buy contrast regardless of these speed paints. People use contrast paints in various ways for very specific jobs, where as Speed Paints are very good for quick basing, which is the advertised purpose of both types so speed paints are better for that. So for intended purposes, if thats all you want, then yeah, skip contrast, but contrast still has uses that are very specific and can be better than speed paints, not to mention some people going for army matching are "bought in".
@@giraton1 I feel sorry for anyone who "needs" Contrast Paints. It's like GW has stolen their soul. No way they're worth using at the price they cost as many of their effects can easily be reproduced with much cheaper methods, and relatively easily, even before we had an alternative like Speed Paints.
Such a great video. Love that you went straight from the bottle and didn't try to "improve" either product with glaze medium. I am really looking forward to more of these Speed Paints, as contrast are the bread and butter of my painting toolbox
Thank you for sharing your thoughts (definitely would like more of these types of videos) on these paints very much looking forward to trying these out..
Great video! As a creator yourself highlighting the fact that no one really wants to spend a lot of money on supplies, when it might be the only bottleneck slowing down your hobby process, is good reassurance for those out there struggling with the financial side of the hobby! Giving us a hands-on demonstration and your honest opinion is only a good thing. After seeing the paints performance I’m gonna look into the Speedpaint next time I wanna try a new technique. 😊👍
Dana you can find a better way, there are two miracle solutions: -GW contrast or other lavis/washes/glacis/inks of any brands for any flat surfaces(armor,vehicules,spaceship,etc...)worked perfectly only spray them with a airbrush, needle 0.2 to 0.4 . -if you used brush ,please forget acrylics, now time to paint with oil paaint well diluted with white spirit for artist !the result will be marvelous!!
AP Speedpaints look like they perform like their washes, which I love. I've used them not only to speed paint an army but for more careful work on plastic scale models and busts. They are excellent. These Speedpaints look like they perform just as well.
Thanks Dana! Great video, keep up all the good work you do 👍

Thanks for this review and comparison. I’m a huge fan of Army Painter because I paint quick and dirty, and I was looking for this kind of “contrast” equivalence.
I switched to primarily using Army Painter a few years ago, but I have go-to colours from about every range there is. These speed paints and the AP Air line have me excited!
The thing to be said about these 2 paint ranges is that they work differently despite their apparent same purpose. This comes from the fact that Speedpaint works by having medium and different pigments pulling on the surface at different strengths, the darker ones pulling more than the lighter, creating separation in such a way that it looks different paint colours were used on different layer. Contrast otherwise works by being a layer that creates it's shading from the shaded areas having more paint which creates a more concentrated colour, which is why you don't see a pull nearly to the extent of the Speedpaints, and that it's medium just sits on the surface rather than sinks into recesses.
Wow these are amazing paints, great video. I have an old old old dark elder army that I've been jonesing to paint and never got around to trying inks and stuff when I was a kid. This is gonna be so awesome!
I can't trust any army painter paints, they're so inconsistent it's crazy. You can buy 3 bottles of exact same paint and have all of them be of differing quality, which is something I haven't seen from any other manufacturer so far. I don't use citadel paints either so not just fanboying gw either. Simply had basically nothing but bad experiences with AP paints.
I have lots of army painter stuff and I fully agree about the inconsistency (their brushes are good tho). Some colours are great, some terrible (looking at you Babe Blonde). I find Vallejo paints a solid middle ground. I have around 200 Vallejo paints, 70 army painter pots, 35 citadel pots (50/50 contrast/normal). What paints do you mainly use?
@@Deadpool_collector247 Vallejo metal colors are the best metallics I've seen but I haven't really tried their regular acrylics yet. I use mainly ProAcryl and Kimera Kolors for my regular acrylics,Vallejo for metallics and scale75 inktensity range for my inks.
@@BarokaiRein I like the Vallejo washes (though a bit glossy) & their metallics too. Thanks for letting me know what your preference is. Im wanting to try out some recommended paints next year :)
As someone who yet again spilled a pot of contracts paint recently (Magos Purple) I can't wait to try something that seems very conorable and possibly better. Outstanding video!
This is cool to see, I just saw the Army Painter video on these recently and as someone who uses Citadel contrast paints quite a bit for glazes and what not I'm keen to see videos like this that break it down nicely. I'm already a fan of a bunch of other AP products so definitely promising, particularly because I have to pay Australian dollars for my hobby supplies 🤣
I have a birthday wish now. These colours look absolutely fantastic and seem super nice to work with. Thank you for the Sience, (or the appropriate product comparrison, cause lets be real, we're not going to know that certain 8 quid colours need thinning with another 8 quid product) and for the entertaining video, keep up thee great work and the improvements!
Really glad you did this comparison, Dana. I've enjoyed your paint style and I was hoping you were going to do a dive into these. The idea of contrast is great but GW's execution and formulation can be maddening. I've even noticed a difference across multiple bottles of the same color. Some of that I'd expect, sure, but viscosity? Not so much. The main things I've been watching Speed Paints videos for are for color application and depth as well as splotchiness. Black Templar is currently the bane of my existence.
I am still pretty new to the hobby, but i have quickly come to the understanding that the only thing you need to buy from GW are the models,. Everything else they sell can be found better, cheaper or both from other companies.
Have to keep an eye out for when they release the full line. Squidmar just released a video about his love of airbrushing with contrast paints, although also mentioned the ridiculous price of Citadels.
Great video, and very interesting! All I want for my models is that they look.. er... Fine on the table, so I don't even thin down my contrasts at all. I just use 'em straight out of the bottle. I almost exclusively paint with contrasts these days, so I really look forward to trying out Speedpaints. I try to get a squad done in a week, for context. Love how you're still stuck in 2020 mode btw ;)
I've only really used contrast paint for two situations. The base coat for Necrons, using a black contrast over a white undercoat sprayed over a grey undercoat before applying silvers and gold. The other is for Orks, pretty much ork skin for boyz, speed painting orks basically and honestly those are the only two situations where I find they look fine.
"The Army Painter paint had way better coverage" is not something I ever expected to hear, but they got there. Now for the long wait until these actually release...
@@georgem1874 Their coloured metallics are quite good, I got a set of them a while back and I honestly found them really easy to use when compared with their standard range.
This is a great review. I had been thinking about this lately. Thank you for taking the time to do a deep dive! I think the blotchyness between the citadel and Army SP variants was night and day. EVEN on the wyldwood comparison, it came out significantly smoother from what I could see. This is a complete game-changer for me and I'll 100% be getting the mega-set when it comes out.
First things off just discovered this channel, and really dig a lot of it. Always love stumbling onto more channels focused on the hobby. Always never really got the hype behind the Contrast paints, the price for each bottle also hurts when you could always make your own. But AP's speedpaint seems really tempting especially at that price. While I am admittedly a Grognard when it comes to painting, there does come a time when I just want battle ready minis especially if it's for stuff I am not particularly excited to paint. (e.g grunts, zombies, etc.) Either way you've earned a sub from me.
I mean, when you're using them afterwards, yeah, thin them. But if it's intended to not need thinning, it would be incredibly unfair to compare them after giving either an advantage.
Overall a fair test and like you said: It'll be fun to try the whole range. I have ALL the contrasts, though I haven't actually used them all much yet, but for future projects I know I'll "need" them all. I know that Space Marine is also like THE trademark GW model, but to be fair they're not an ideal test-model for either paint. (1 exception would be Space Wolves with more textures, fewer helmets and just more ornaments with pelts to break up all the smooth surfaces, but whatever.) Naturally there's a LOT of painters/players who play these, but to see how well they can perform it's more "fair" to try them out on something more organic, like almost anything out of the Daemons book, or almost anything from AoS Sylvaneth. But by all means, you can see the finish and some of the main differences even on Space Marines, so it does work. I'm very excited and it seems both ranges have their stronger and weaker ones, as you might expect. Overall it's a win-win for painters as we now get some more competition and more overall products that both do the same thing! :D Yet another great vid, can't wait for more content when the full range releases! :D
And now we need the comparison with Scale's Instant Colors! Also IMO Ultramarines Blue is the worst Contrast Paint and was probably only made because Ultramarines are the poster child of GW.
Weirdly, the one thing i've found Ultramarines blue is really good for is painting jeans. The uneven coverage works well if you're painting cowboys - - just clean your brush slightly and then aggressively wipe the paint off the knees and other places that would be worn and whiter.
A few days ago I ordered my first ever contrast paints, had I seen this video I would have waited and bought the speed paints version! Very good video!
I just have to compliment your sleek professional style. Your hair and make-up are great. You are very pretty. Also - your videos kick ass. It’s like if being in the class of one of the great renaissance painters in its attention to the effects of product content and the benefits of careful exactitude, colour theory sophistication and creative inspiration. Thank you so much.
Thanks for this, I’ve been really interested in these paints and I have to say this was very convincing, I think I’ll be picking these up once they are out.
Just the fact that the speed paint is more consistent out of the bottle makes it more useful in my mind as I always hate messing with the levels of consistency
Great review. So far every review I have seen on these says basically the same thing - a solid performer at a much better price point. I am hopeful that the entire range performs this well. And if you can, please try them through an airbrush...if they work well there that would be awesome. Cheers!
So glad you did this comparison, as I have been considering this very issue but did not wish to pay out for new paints needlessly. As a UK resident I don't think the cost difference is as pronounced as yours is, but AP are still cheaper than GW. Thank you.
I recently got into painting with contrast paint and I so wnated to wait for speedpaint to come out... but I havent. I still feel like buying the entire speedpaint range will be the smartest decision I ever make.
I think they are clearly a contrast 1.5, if you are after a quicker more consistent thickness across the range, and cheaper option, with less medium use. I'll consider replacing contrast with them as tests next year. I have wayyyy to many contrast paints but mostly use them as x2 thinned-out coats to avoid looping and get consistency. This then takes twice as long ... so speed paint may be speedier ....
Very nice comparison. I’ve just started using Contrast paints and have been hesitant recommending them to my club kids. This is a great alternative. Thank you.
