Nickelodeon's Doug is a show that I remember fondly, now that I've developed a fond enjoyment of this show. However, when I was younger, that wasn't exactly the case. I used to HATE this show. I just felt like it was so bland and boring. However, that would all change, the first time I saw this exact episode. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to check out the episode of Doug that changed my opinion on this show.
Also, I touch on this in the video, but seriously, thank you so so so much for clicking on this video. If you're reading thing right now, you rock. I absolutely appreciate the fact that you're here and I want you to know that you are super cool :D
Thank you for watching!

Doug was always relatable because of how the show depicts his fears and his dreams, especially when you’re shy. It was always like Hey Arnold meets Arthur with its down to earth relatability, but it was basically overshadowed by other shows at the time. Doug and Futurama are also why Billy West is one of my favorite voice actors.

I feel that Doug is a show that falls in the "Seinfeld Syndrome." It's a show that is nowadays seen as cliché thanks to other slice of life shows that followed it that did the concept slightly better. It's one of those shows that you really have to have a certain perspective on it to really enjoy the show. At first glance, the show would definitely come off as boring, but while I will admit that the show can get a little boring sometimes, this show is a lot deeper than many people give it credit for. One thing that makes the show so good is that even though the plots are simple, the morals behind them are highly underrated. For example, the episode where Doug has the babysit Skeeter's little brother is a typical babysitter plot, but the moral behind it is executed perfectly. Doug's been trying to take advice from others who had more babysitting experience, and he realizes that his only flaw regarding his babysitting job is listening to others rather than himself. This episode teaches us that while it's great to ask for help from others, there are times where you just need to listen to your gut more and do things your way. That's a moral that we all need to learn even to this day. As for Doug as a character, most people who call him a bland character are missing the point. Doug was not supposed to be an interesting character. He was deliberately written as an average everyman surrounded by a quirkier, more colorful cast. Rocko and Arnold were written the same way in their respective roles, and they both grew to be some of the most likable protagonists. Doug was a well-behaved kid who, while not without his flaws, was good at heart and always admitted his wrongs and did whatever he could to fix them. He never whined about how he had it bad and just learned to deal with the consequences when he would do wrong. That's what makes him a likable protagonist. If anything, Doug being "boring" is a good thing. Because it's basically a reflection of how many children's normal life is: nothing special happening, just a simple day, etc. That's why the show was backed up with Doug's wild imaginations and quirks. It wasn't the first slice of life show, but it was the very first slice of life cartoon that focused on a regular kid going through regular kid issues, and that's why while I don't expect a lot of people to like this show, they should still respect this cartoon for the influence it had and still has on other slice of life cartoons that followed it.

Billy West is voicing the narrator in the Quail Man segment as well as voicing Doug himself. The sort of thing I can notice due to watching Futurama and knowing how many characters he voices there! I always thought it was funny that even in his imagination, Doug's superhero outfit consists of things like wearing underpants on the outside of his regular pants, a towel for a cape, and a belt on his head to be a headdress reminiscent of a quail's plume.

Ah heck yes, finally someone else who knows of Doug! None of my childhood friends liked this show but it was one of my absolute favorites. I got to meet Jim Jenkins and his wife a few times late 2022/early 2023 and they are such nice warm and nice people. It was totally surreal but immediately took me back to elementary school days going to the video rental store and begging my mother to take home the “Doug’s First Movie” VHS. I watched a couple episodes recently and realized just how relatable that show was as a kid.

In a way, Doug was kind of the Nickelodeon version of King of the Hill: more subdued, less flashy art style, with the focus on finding the odd situations in the mundane everyday world as opposed to a quirky, seizure-inducing environment like Ren and Stimpy, with the central character usually being the reactor instead of the actor and leaving the quirkiness to the more colorful characters around him. **ALSO ROGER KLOTZ HAD A MASSIVE CRUSH ON DOUG THERE I SAID IT*

Doug and Hey Arnold were ahead of their time because of their down to earth content without showing unrealistic storytelling. Your opinion near the end if this has modified our brains growing may be true in a sense, but social anxiety has always been real, in different forms at least. I think Doug's content was trying to make us more aware of the things we will encounter as we get older. Doug tried to find a solution with his friends going to Roger's but went to action because he could not stand alone and do nothing. I think his friends understood that about Doug. He wouldn't just stand by if there was such a dramatic behavior shift in his peers and eventually his curiosity would get the best of him. It was perfect planning on their part to surprise him. Doug was also the most creative kid in the early 90s Nicktoons, and I would not be surprised if he grew up to be a content creator himself.

Nickelodeon's Doug was the cartoon I watched countless times as a kid, albeit in reruns (Disney's, I barely watched at all). I have the first three seasons on DVD. Season 4 is missing two episodes for some reason. The show did get a complete collection a couple years later. Roger was unique in that he was more of a nuisance than a true bully. Doug even points this out in the episode Doug Saves Roger. One of my favorites. Mr Bone's nephew, Percy Femur, gets transferred to their school, and it soon becomes clear that, unlike Roger, Percy is a true bully. Often resorting to physical threats, and warning Roger not to tell anyone, OR ELSE. When Doug intervenes, Percy turns his attention to Doug instead, threatening to clobber him after school if he doesn't show up. Roger merely teases Doug, never actually trying to start a fight or resort to physical violence.

I always hated when shows and PSAs preached to me about healthy eating, like this episode or Gopher Cakes. Screw you, Big Brother. If I want to eat a bag of chips or my friends and I want to get together once in a while to put off-brand Ding Dongs in a blender, we’ll do it if we damn well please. And therein lied part of the problem: their message was ineffective most of the time because the thing they were wagging their finger at always looked better than the alternative they offered. Who wants to eat a raw beet like it’s an apple?

Man, I haven't thought about this show in a while. I remember liking it as a kid... never could get into Disney's version, it just didn't feel right. You picked an interesting episode to feature. It's a good one, though my own reflections are somewhat different. I used to see this plotline quite a bit in kids' shows growing up. "Why are my friends avoiding me? Are they not my friends anymore? ... Wait, it's okay - they're just throwing me a surprise party!" As a kid, I thought it was kind of lazy that the resolution always involved a blatant misunderstanding, usually with a surprise party reveal. It was fine, but boring. As an adult... this hits me differently, and not for the better. I struggled to make and keep friends as I got older. I didn't know how to deal with bullies or navigating difficult social situations, so I just learned to withdraw and hide when I felt vulnerable. Being alone as an adult can be its own nightmare. Life with a family may have its challenges, but at least you know you have loved ones that care about you. Being alone... all you have is yourself - and just getting out there and meeting people, you're not guaranteed to meet anyone that will accept or even like you. Ah well... either way, it's nice to see this show get some positive recognition. Thanks for covering it =)

I liked watching Doug as a kid. This episode was pretty cool too. In fact, I remember one episode about Mr. Dink trying to catch a fish he named Chester and Doug helps him. Speaking of Quailman, I used to make comics of my superhero in 7th and 8th grade. Nowadays, I'm not a good artist but I can think of decent ideas with inspiration. I had a bunch of different characters like dinosaurs and metal snakes until I scrapped them for new ones. Like only one 6ft dinosaur who befriends a woman and her adopted daughter while fighting his first supervillain and learning to control a strong but dangerous superpower. Glad you uploaded on my birthday today! Thanks, Shawne! Oh, I just want to say that you are doing great reviewing cartoons and I can't wait to see more of your stuff.

As told by Ginger does build on itself with some major continuity milestones. If you watch this video out of sequence you'll really regret doing so as you won't feel the full gravity of the episode otherwise. It's like watching the middle of book 3 in Avatar the last Airbender. Sure you'll get that the Fire Lord is bad, and Azula is crazy. But you won't understand how huge and significant it is for Aang to learn fire bending from Zuko and why Ty Lee and May turning on Azula is a really big deal. Shoot you'll think Toph is just there for comedic relief and be constantly wondering why she can metal bend but Aang who can bend all the elements can't.

One of my favorite episodes of Doug has to do with Video Game Addiction. Doug wins a new game console and becomes so obsessed with finishing the sci-fi shooter game that came with the console that he starts to neglect his sleep schedule and schoolwork because of it. Another one of my favorites is about Body Image where after Doug spent a weekend at his grandmother's, he finds out he gained a few pounds, which makes him worry about how others view him and those worries only get worst when he gets invited to a pool party a BeeBee's Mansion.

This and Rugrats were my two favorite Nickelodeon story. I always wondered if Roger was really more of a friend than bully to Doug. There are other episodes where the two interact and are not necessarily evil.

I always wonder what wound of happened if Doug never went over to Roger’s trailer. It didn’t look like anyone was going to get him.

So glad I clicked this video!! Great job man!! Any chance you could do “Doug’s Lost Weekend”? I think that’s the title. It’s the one where he wins a video game system and blows off a school assignment. That episode really hit for me as I would do that quite a lot in the 90’s😁

A lot of people don't like Doug anymore, or at least not publicly.. a lot more young people do now, which is good for the series.

I've always wondered, even when I was a kid: What exactly was their plan if Doug didn't show up on his own. Were they just going to party without him? Was someone supposed to bring him at a particular time, but couldn't find him and got left out?

"6 year old in the year 2000". Wait, were you also born in '94? That might explain how your videos cover topics that I relate with a lot~ I loved this era of cartoons and still like to revisit them from time to time. And yeah, I can relate with the feeling of losing my friends, especially in middle school when everyone was going through changes and just abandoning me. I honestly feel it had left me with attachment issues growing up.

DuskTillShawn you seem like a good person and it's not surprising you'd have a lot of friends. i also had a lot of friends growing up but many friendships during your childhood like school, camp, town etc people graduate, move, etc but then again you can make new friends.

I'm pretty sure beets were meant to parody Popeye eating spinach before he wollops his foes. Perhaps the gag went off the wall but I think they were trying to make fun of those corny health messages in kids shows.

I always liked the show Doug because he reminded me of my father and Pattie reminded me of my mother, my dad’s name being Doug and the fact that I was 11 1/2 years old the same age as the character I used to watch the show weekday evenings Then, after Doug was Inspector gadget, and if I was really lucky, I got to stay up late and watch Ren & Stimpy but I didn’t watch that show until Sunday morning. Looking for Skeeter being more edgy maybe try episode Doug’s Brainy friend? Or Skeeter when he gets his own superhero called Silver Skeeter Doug would say that silver Skeeter is too powerful He can’t lose. I think of more recently, the AVGN episode of the game silver surfer wear everything you touch kills your character wonder if there’s any connection between silver Skeeter and the NES game silver surfer?

Silver Skeeter was based off of the Marvel superhero Silver Surfer, which much like Silver Skeeter was insanely OP.
