I think the point of the movie is to show the consequences of not talking about Kevin when their son is clearly deranged. There’s definitely some irony in the title.

@ThatOneAsianBroChick very true, Psychopathy has a spectrum, like some researchers say, most people have psychopathic tendencies but they are so minimal they aren't really considered psychopaths, now psychopathic CEO's are somewhere in the middle, either that or they're Sociopaths (theres a term for a special type of sociopaths that are anti social but still understand consequences so they are more careful with their actions, I don't remember the term so..)

I hate the treatment of Eva by the other adults in town. Her daughter was maimed by Kevin, then both her husband and daughter were murdered by him. She lost just as much as the other people and likely would have been murdered also had she been home at the time (although I do feel like killing his dad and sister while Eva was at work was kind of a final fuck you to Eva). Then you see Kevin’s classmate come up to her and he’s kind and concerned for her, despite the fact that her son injured him soo badly he’s now wheelchair bound. It makes me soo sad. Fantastic movie though.

i think Kevin always wanted to make his mother’s life miserable, and he did so by being a monster of a child to her and only her. he eventually managed to take away everything she had, including her social status(?) and the child she loved but i also really feel like kevin only seems like an evil, misery-inducing child because everything is from eva’s point of view and she never liked him. she might’ve been really fucked up to him; psychotic, overdramatic, and micromanaging. but she doesn’t think so, thus the movie doesn’t portray so

@mingkiway250
@mingkiway250 4 года назад
@@tiat3137 I agree he shoulda taken her more seriously, but in his eyes I would say that it was hard for him to see her concerns. When Kevin was a toddler, the mom tells kevin she was happier before she had him and the dad over hears her and shakes his head at her in disappointment. Considering that Kevin was nothing but an angel towards him and overhearing his wife say that to their Child, I'm guessing he began to believe that she never wanted him and would seek any blame to pin on to him. Like when Celia gets her eye injured. They don't know what truly happened but the mom pins the blame on Kevin without proof and this in turn looks bad towards the dad who once again is unable to see how truly bad Kevin is.
@cirigaming9377
@cirigaming9377 4 года назад
@Masahiro Sakurai @Masahiro Sakurai Yeah that is why you cannot blame him, Kevin made him feel that the problem was Eva. Because he grew up living like a normal kid/teenager to his dad while Eva aged looking very stressed and paranoid. When their daughter got into an accident the dad was shaking his head when Eva was telling her side(it just shows that he was not buying her excuses). On his mind, the problem was Eva and she was just blaming someone else for her actions.

I agree that Eva was a caring mom but she was not a *good* mom. One reason her son hates her is that she couldn't treat him with affection when he was a young baby because she was depressed during the pregnancy and aftermath. Her husband bears responsibility too, as he insisted like the old fashioned TV show Green Acres that Eva give up everything that she loved...her freedom, her life in New York, her artistic and travel interests, to be a full time mom. The father never listens to Eva or provides any discipline for his son. It's shown near the end that the father is starting to have misgivings about Kevin but won't admit them and transfers the blame to his wife. The doctor as well dismisses Eva's concerns after barely examining him...Kevin can't be autistic because he doesn't happen to be rocking at that moment? Not saying Kevin was autistic but the lack of speech and very late potty training ought to have merited some follow up to see if something was going on with the child. The mother also bears responsibility for not pursuing the causes of the constant colicky crying. Babies cry because something is wrong. Food allergy? Chronic pain? And she should not have taken one doctor's "he's fine" as a final answer. I think Eva herself was a narcissistic person who had trouble empathizing (note her contempt for fat people) and her son inherited that, so the nature or nurture question here is answered with "both."

Yes yes! It always seemed to me like he was greatly affected as a child by knowing that his mom didn't like him, he clearly had oppositional defiant disorder. It's common in children that face trauma at a young age or are abused or feel unwanted by their parents/endure harsh punishments. He was also showing signs of sociopathy at a very young age (the pooping on purpose so she could clean it). She was talking to a medical doctor when she should have been talking to a child/family therapist. She is somewhat responsible.

"Eva was a caring mom and Kevin had a loving family" did we watch the same film? Eva was a travel writer and her husband wanted her to have children... I thought part of the point was that she resented Kevin as he represented her caving to her husband's wants and having to give up the career that she loved in order to do it? it's true Kevin clearly has some type of personality disorder, but she resented him, too, their dynamic was unhealthy on both ends. I'm DEFINITELY not saying it's the Mom's fault that Kevin did a bow-and-arrow equivalent of a mass shooting at his school, but their household was never rosy and wonderful, there was a lot of emotional underlying things happening.

I read the book. Honestly, it's clear how much Eva disliked Kevin, even when he was just a baby she seemed to think he was out to get her. It's only from her point of view, letters written to her deceased husband, so you only get her side of the story. Doesn't change the fact that Kevin committed a mass killing, but I agree with OP, their life wasn't great. From how I interpreted it from the book, Kevin truly preferred his mom to his dad. One of the things that happens before the school killings is the talk of Eva and Frank separating, and Eva notes how Kevin seemed miserable over the fact that he would be stuck with his dad. Their relationship is not black and white.

I think it's a perfect depiction of how important the "mother and child" bond is. She hated him from the beginning, even during pregnancy you can see how unhappy about it she is. This is a very good movie synopsis. But there are a lot of extremely integral, hidden and deeper meanings behind every single scene. Kevin knew how to talk at a young age, he knew how to use the bathroom at a young age, he was smarter and more intelligent than anyone gave him credit for (which is why he rolled the ball back to the mom) All he was doing since the moment he was born, was punishing his mother. Which is why he didn’t kill her but everyone around her that she cared about EDIT: Also at the very end when she visited him before he was about to be sent off to the prison for 18+ She said to him “Its been 2 years, I want you to tell me...why?” He said “I used to think I knew. Now I’m not so sure.” That was his way of basically saying I did all those things because I thought I hated you. But now I don’t. Which is why she stood up and hugged him. And he hugged her _back_

I watched this a loooong time ago but back then I always felt that he chose to spare Eva because he actually loved her. Okay hear me out. From the beginning Kevin was awful to her yes, but always himself. No matter what he did Eva continued to try and love him, support him, and forge a relationship with him. He was a very disturbed and antagonizing child and his mother knew this. While with his father he put up a facade. The scene that made me believe he loved her was when he was sick. He clung to Eva because he knew no matter what she tries to love and nurture him. He felt safe with her and trusted her. As well because he is sick he had no patience to try and act sweet to his father like he normally does. And once he was well again reverted back to pushing her away and fooling the father. I felt it showed how when Kevin is in need he instinctively goes to his mother. Whether he wants to admit it or not, or if he can even recognize it, I believe he loved his mother and wanted her to live. He planned every detail of that horrific day including his surrender. Knowing he was going to prison and that it wouldn't be easy (to say the least), he wanted his mother with him, supporting him. Like Eva always tried to do. No matter what he did, escalating in ways that even seems like he was testing her resolve to mother him, Eva persevered. I could argue as well that he killed the father and sister to further isolate her and have her entirely to himself. I mean, with everyone else dead who else was there for her to be with? A messed up form of trauma bonding. This was way longer than i intended it to be and thanks for entertaining this little theory of mine!

@SweeetSpice
@SweeetSpice 4 года назад
I did not understand it in the same way. The time when he was sweet and acted nice with his mom and then reverted back to being mean the next day, was a way for him to mess with her. Making her believe for a short instant that maybe, just maybe, they can form a normal mother-son bond and get along. To me, he knew what he was doing, even at that age. He was being cruel. As for the end, I feel like he did not kill her exactly for the same reason, just to be cruel. He wanted her not to be able to come back from this. He killed the dad, her husband so she has no support after the killing and no more life companion (we know it's a little harder for older women to find someone again). He obviously killed his sister because the mom truly loved her and they had a normal & loving relationship, which he never had (although he is a psychopath, he himself probably did not know why he was that way and where all that hatred came from). He wanted to play one last very cruel trick on his mom before being sent to prison. Killing her would have been a favor from him and that's certainly not what he wanted. He picked on her his whole life and that was his last opportunity.

Both theories can be correct. His method of expressing his love for his mother is torturing her. He recognized from an early age that he could only receive acknowledgment from her if he was angering her. It’s been reported that children who are emotionally neglected by their parents often feel the need to act out in order to get their attention, whether it’s through drugs, sex, or other dangerous acts. Kevin’s method of getting his mother’s attention is by making her life hell, which he wouldn’t do if he didn’t want her attention. So yes, he does “love” her, but he shows it by intentionally making her suffer. This whole film is about the complexity of parental / child dynamics and the emotional turmoil that comes with raising a child you didn’t want. It’s not black and white.

my personal theory on why kevin kept his mother alive may seen out there, but i’ve seen the movie so many times it’s what makes the most sense now- kevin loves his mother as much as a psychopath can love, and his relationship with his mother is the only genuine one he’d ever have. kevin absolutely isolated himself and his mother so that they were the only two people able of forgiving each other and letting each other in. the shooting was kevins way of getting the motherly attention and correction which was most of what he wanted
@briyachrist
@briyachrist 2 года назад
@@alisafrnglomg That actually makes a lot of sense and doesn’t seem far fetched. Because that is as far as a psychopath can love is the most brutal & toxic way but it still exists there. He didn’t care for any other outside damage as long as he still could connect with her.

Its interesting that there's valid arguments for both sides of "evil is born" and "evil is created" in this movie. You could very easily argue that the entire reason Kevin is the way he is because he was almost immediately emotionally rejected by his mother as soon as he was born. Eva not only couldn't feel the kind of kinship she was expecting with her child, but worse, she felt it was off somehow.. that something was wrong with it, and thus, severing herself emotionally away from a child that desperately needed a mother's love in the earliest stage's of its brain development. The baby could sense it was rejected, and for it, Kevin punished Eva in every conceivable way he could the rest of his life. You could even argue the act of killing people in the school wasn't so much about the act of violence itself as it was the ultimate shame Kevin's own actions could inflict upon his mother in the end, without really fully understanding or thinking through the consequences and weight of those terrible actions. But funny enough... you could *also* just as easily make the argument that Kevin really and truly was born an evil child, and a mother's maternal instincts are perhaps one of our strongest primal senses in the entirety of our human history, and for whatever reason, Eva could almost immediately tell something was wrong with the child the moment it was born.. a primal feeling she fought desperately to overcome the rest of her life instead of owning up to the fact that her son was truly, undeniably, disturbed by his very nature, and wrongfully chose to continue to accept him as he was instead of getting him the help he might have needed to prevent him from unleashing the unspeakable violence he was destined to commit. Its definitely a thought provoking, twisted, and disturbing take on the Nature VS Nurture debate.

Kevin was a deeply disturbed child. He was craving for mother's love but he could sense that his mother did not want him. He knew he was an unwanted child and he never forgot that. He was vengeful, for not being loved and he did everything to punish his mother for that. It was a war of ego. Eva never really put much effort to be honest with him. She, however in a fit of rage, said to Kevin "Mommy was very happy when Kevin was not born". She said this when he was two years old, I guess. But he understood. He has been spiteful ever since. Him vandalizing Eva's life's work, her collection of rare world maps... thats all a reaction against the things he was jealous of. He was jealous that his mother loved her hobbies more than him. He was jealous that she loved his sister more than him, his father more than him. He knew he was the last person that his mother loved and that turned him into a self-destructive man. If you can't love your baby, give him up for adoption. But don't raise them in a false pretence of duty. They know when they are a gift, and when they are a burden.

I turned out fine because after taking care of me and learning who I was, she loved me. People underestimate how difficult it can be sometimes to immediately love this little tiny stranger who seems to want to suck the life out of you. But you have to deal with it, you learn to love them, and quickly, get some outside help from a therapist to help. It's difficult to find people to talk about it, since it's taboo, you can't discuss it with friends or family, they'll think you're a monster. Or maybe it's just postpartum depression. But you can't ever take that out on the child, and if you can't deal with it, you must seek help. I think that was one of the issues here.

When people say Kevin wasn't disciplined and deserved a beating, I always think "wdym?" There were scenes when she slapped his hand and literally broke his arm. Children like him don't need discipline, and fear doesn't work. They need therapists and psychologists who can help understand how their mind works and how to make them decent people who won't be a danger to society. I was reading about a woman who had children that were psychopaths, and she said she tried to discipline them, however they would only behave around her, but would still cause trouble with everyone else. She didn't discipline them, she taught them how they have to act in front of her, she didn't teach them right from wrong. Keyword- act. They will ACT good in front of the people they need to, that doesn't mean they are good or even understand that their actions are wrong.

Um you said “Eva was a caring mom, etc” . She didn’t show that she cared about him at a young age and he could sense that as a child. She didn’t want to hold him as a baby, she would get easily frustrated and would give up on trying to bond all together. But when her daughter came along, she treated her differently from a young age. In a way, she’s partially the reason he was the way he was.

sometimes people are just born wrong, it's not their fault or the parents. it something that just happens
@kasey_bro6042
@kasey_bro6042 4 года назад
i don’t think she “gave up” on bonding. when he was born he automatically didn’t like her. he’d cry every time she held him and didn’t stop. he clearly came out hating her out of nowhere. i feel like if u were in her shoes you’d get easily frustrated too. she rlly did keep trying and she could have hated him altogether and abused him. but she only threw him once and she even regretted it afterwards and never touched him again. there’s rlly nothing she could have done that’s just the way he was born. she tried raising him right and bonding with him even as a teen. when she took him to dinner and to mini golf. she tried hard. i think she was also just confused why her son didn’t love her. that takes a toll on a mother.
@nanishavelle
@nanishavelle 4 года назад
kasey_bro im not saying it wasn’t frustrating but she did give up. She didn’t keep trying. After a certain age, it’s too late though. I’m not saying it’s 100% her fault, but certain things you do during childhood WILL effect the way they are when they grow up.
