1996's the craft is one of my all-time favorite movies. the fashion, the music, the acting, the message. it all brings me so much joy, which is pretty funny considering how dark the subject matter is. when they announced the craft sequel i was understandably concerned about it, and while in some ways it exceeded my expectations, in other ways, it failed. here are my thoughts on the craft: legacy.

@steelessummerbreeze6299
@steelessummerbreeze6299 3 года назад
I agree. If you look at them in the class rooms, they blend into the background. Which should NEVER happen to vital or important characters. It also kills any sort of individuality that girls like these, would have. If the director wanted to stick with the horrible "cutesy" look the film had, then have them dress in Cottagecore. If you look on tik tok there are plenty of wiccans-the original magic that inspired the caft-that have the Cottagecore look or have this alternative look to them. That way we can pick these girls out of a crowd, but also have a semblance of understanding as to why no one likes them. For me the person in charge of costuming should have been fired for this reasoning.
@vladaimpaler

@@steelessummerbreeze6299 “cottagecore” is a trend. They aren’t supposed to be trendy. Alternative fashion and “cottagecore” are very different from each other too. @thebinlgbtisbabadook7832
@thebinlgbtisbabadook7832 3 года назад
@@kittygrimm7301 Yup, in The Legacy, dabbling in magic was taken sooo lightly. It was obvious that there were no consultants, unlike in The Craft. Like, how can a below-novice level group of wannabe witch girls be able to conduct a feat as big as stopping time? In The Craft, the feats the girls performed, altgough amazing, remain simple and quite believable. The Craft was also logical in a sense that the more they practice, the better they got, and the larger the feats they were able to perform. In The Legacy, I find it hard to believe that the characters are able to perform even the lowest magic trick. Why? Because witchcraft acts require overwhelming determination and desire for the feat or act or spell you want to get done. Sarah, Nancy, Rochelle, and Bonnie all have backgrounds that justifies how much and how badly they want the things they want, and that's why their magic was effective. Their desperation drives the force. But in The Legacy, all the kiddos do not have enough motivation. They are not sad enough nor angry enough. They don't even have any emotions when doing the acts. Magic has laws. Whether the filmmakers believe in magic or not, I wish they took into consideration that magic has laws just like nature.

@@vladaimpaler It's not at all untrue, you see how mad white women/and men get when white male protagonists get a POC love interest in a popular show? The POC get so much backlash to the point where they're either scrapped/and or replaced with a white female It's happened with Sleepy Hallow, Boys Meet World, The Flash, Person of Interest, Doctor Who, Saved By The Bell (Lisa was originally the love interest for Zac, but that was scrapped because of backlash), Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Anne With An E, This is Us, You, Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, Twisted (A show that got canceled), Teen Titans (Live Action), Friends (I may be a little older, but I remember when Aisha Tyler got major backlash when she was Ross's supposed love interest), Riverdale, and more!

@@terrier-9544 that’s more jealousy than anything. Even in cases where that is true, I still think that directors should challenge that by putting a poc in the main role. Honestly the period scene would’ve be better if it went like this: she felt it coming and asked to leave (she’s shy and the new girl so she didn’t explain why) the teacher denied it, then she insisted without explaining until she got “exposed” but the teacher still denied it so she stopped. None of the other girls were there, all of her classmates in that class were assholes that didn’t help her at all, so we see her slowly crumbling down while the classmates giggle. At the end of the class she zooms out of the classroom and that’s when we see the pool of blood (have the guy that’s supposed to “fall” for her react the loudest). She only first meets the other girls in the hall/bathroom. This way we can establish the toxic patriarchal way of thinking, the way that affects the main character and the bullies, plus we can antagonize the other students and make the girls stand out meanwhile being a more relatable and understandable experience.

Teens and kids aren't stupid they can handle dark/ harsh themes and character development. A good movie doesn't need to be pretencious or artsy or edgy to be good. A good or at least memorable movie needs to feel REAL. Characters we can sympathize with, situations we can relate, depict actions to make us say "What would I do? Oh, yeah, exactly that or go, hell no! and even somthing morally gray like I get, not for me thou" as well as the repercurssions derived from them. That's it. DELIVER A DECENT MOVIE.

ugh yes. i watched this the other day and it actually seemed promising (even tho i didn’t like the idea of a sequel either) but then it all just crashed and burned. the writing was really lazy and the characters were so incredibly underdeveloped and nothing made sense... also this is a nitpick but there was just too much gen z slang that already makes it feel outdated lmao. (ok i just finished the vid and see you said you didn’t take issue with that, i guess to me those parts seemed really forced and unnatural rather than trying to accurately depict modern teenagers and that’s why it bugged me lol)

They could have brought such a cool spin on this by letting each of them bring a bit of their own culture into the movie. Brujería, voodoo, Santeria, etc...and rather than have the girls of color act as her back up band, let each one shine with a more fleshed out back story. Bringing the O.G. cast back would also have been awesome. Perhaps if they had to fight AGAINST Nancy Downs and her daughter, instead of watering it down to "The Babysitter's Club Plays With Magic," They needed a true protagonist. That would be a reboot I would want to see.

*Waring and hello there you dapper RU-vid connoisseur (imagine someone stroking their sweet dapper mustache even though I wont ever have one 😭)* , hopefully this comment made some type of sense (if in theory at least) If I can try and give this flamin hot air ballon some cohesion (????, yeah f-it I’ll go with that word), Nancy probably either got pregnant in the middle or towards the end of the film (whenever they got the most powerful). And actually if you think about it, if nobody knew she was pregnant, they wouldn’t be able to bind an unborn baby’s powers (they bind Nancy, but while the baby may still be attached to her and not fully formed yet, somehow missed the baby all together......it’s like when you’re a doctor and go in for a surgery and think you got everything, but come to find out later down the line (cause the patient vamoosed for whatever reason and you didn’t get the chance to thoroughly check) that there was still something there). Could be why she was truly laughing at the end of the movie, laughing cause they ‘missed a spot’ after all the trouble they went through to take away her powers....

The biggest flaw for me is that what made the original cool and iconic was how dark magic made them dangerous to the people around them but also to each other, but this one was so... light? They could have done a different movie about a feminist coven with light magic and call it a day but they decided to do this. Why call it a remake/sequel to The Craft if the tone is completely different? It missed the whole point of the OG. It's like one of those autumn influencer girls directed the movie lol.

the thing too with the period scene, coming from a girl with a very heavy flow, they could have like indicated her period is coming and like she wears protection like a pad or so, then it over flows from her miscalculation that the pad was too small or even that her step family buys her a wrong size since they're men to take out a bit of the" misogyny" . Like you said they never indicated that that's her first or second period so its just a thought. I also thought that they could have made the girls different ages and in different classes so the main girl who could be the youngest goes to the bathroom meets them there and cry then they make her feel better. another thing is the cast is unbelievable as outcasts the average bully would not see them and think of a target, if that make sense. They dress better than the extras even from the start of the movie, that alone should bring sort of popularity. They are beautiful and don't hide it, the girl who is the "ugly" one is pretty average looking (no hate). They probably should have done something with that like make her feel like the duff or that she hates her mediocrity and that's her insecurity, add more to it to spice it up she could be the one to put a love spell on the bully boy to make her self feel less ugly. Then every body starts *thinking* we've gone too far but continues any way.

The orginal movie came out at the most perfect time for me. It was released in theaters literally a week before my 12th birthday, I was interested in witchcraft and the occult because my mom was at the time as well and would help me to "love spells " which actually worked believe it or not and it just seemed like the perfect movie for my best friend and I, who were outcasts at our school. Kids called me a "freak "and "satan worshiper" because I had dyed my hair "vampire red" wore black nail polish and wore a pentagram charm and it just looked like the movie was made for girls like me (at least in my 11 year old mind) I had just begun dating a boy who was a little older than me and he said the craft "looked stupid " and instead we went to see Twister which had also just come out. I fell asleep during it, lol. The following day my mom took my best friend and I to see The craft and of course we loved it. I related a lot to Sarah's character as well as Nancy and Bonnie. The characters felt real with the exception of the racist blonde girl (I didn't know any kids in the 90s no matter how popular they were who would be considered funny or cool for being racist) Not long after the movie was released I remember so many girls adopting the goth look, including kids who had previously called me a freak and satan worshiper but that's preteens for you ! Marilyn Manson was becoming really popular around this time so that kind of helped goth and the alternative look come back into fashion again. This movie will always have a special place in my heart. This sequel felt so generic and predictable. It was exactly what I expected it would be. My nieces love the original film and they were all born in the the 00s and 2010s and they didn't like the sequel at all. We all agreed that the period scene was ridiculous...a spot or even big stain of blood on her pants would have been so much more believable than a damn puddle of blood..was she hemorrhaging??

I have 3 questions about this film. 1. Was the script written over a certain amount of years? While parts of the film feel very 2019/2020 but you have stuff like the twilight references which felt very 2010 and dated. 2. The flow of the film feels very messy was it a badly structured script or was it a poorly edited film? There’s even entire plot points and characters who disappear 3. With the trans character (that’s another issue names were forgettable) while yes she’s her mothers daughter the script hinted at the witch powers being in the female blood line. They even asked the lead character who her mother was due to how powerful she was. So is it bloodlines or what you identify as that give you witch powers and if she hadn’t identified as female at some point would she have had warlock powers instead or just past the witch powers on to whatever daughters she had? If I have accidentally insulted anyone here I really didn’t mean to.

Watching this movie was such a surreal experience for me, because that house was based on a house in Brooklyn I spent a good chunk of my childhood in--like, down to the bay window staircase--and the ee-veel boys and their dad are INCREDIBLY loosely based on my friends and their dad, whom the director lived with for a year because their parents were seeing each other. And full respect to the director for using her art to work out her trauma, but it really just goes to show how much changes in the process of fictionalization for the sake of good dramatic tension. I called my friend while I was watching it (we both decided to watch it the same night), and we were dying laughing. I was like "Did she give your dead mother backstory to a side character?" And he was like "Yeah, it makes it a lot harder for the audience to hate us if the fact that we were all fucked up because our mom just died is thrown into the mix."

The clothes were too trendy for outcast, there were too many callbacks to The Craft, the only callback should have been the actress Assumpta Serna who owns the occult shop in The Craft, it would have been awesome if they had of went there for supplies. The director and writer or writers relied too much on callbacks, and not enough originality for the plot, it would have been so much better if they had of not played it safe. Where are they now, how did they cope with their teenage years, did they address their trauma from those years, and could they heal together with their trauma or use it to justify negative actions in their adult years? I mean, the movie was great but the girls were hellah problematic to each other in years dealing with a lot of trauma. In this Era of green witches, using shadow work to address problems with your inner child, becoming more aware of problematic behavior especially in race and sexism. The best part of the original Craft was how grounded the magic was. The use of practical effects made the magic seem tangible in a way that at first left you guessing whether or not it was all just coincidence or if they actually have powers. Time stopping magic is so stupid and is such a rip off of charmed. In the original craft the types of magic they used were all in line with actual witchcraft practices.

I think a big part of that was the actress who plays Nancy. She's Wiccan in real life I think & owns that shop the original girls stole from so she made sure the movie was respectful to the real practice

Yeah. It came as a surprise anonymous didn't know if it would actually happen. Or when Sarah changed her eye color at first and they were like, "Oh....." lol.

Did it? I’d say the gravity defying pencil and the love spell and the hair removal curse were pretty clearly magic. It didn’t have the glowing lights and sparkles but it was clearly not just a coincidence. Did you mean more organic?

The Craft is “dated” in the sense that’s its obviously in the 90s, but it isn’t cheesy and “how do you do fellow kids?” about it. It comes across as very natural and how young people would actually talk and dress. They aren’t caricatures of teens, they are characters. From the clips/reviews I’ve seen of Legacy they were being way to obvious about how much they want to appeal to the modern teen demographic and comes across as cringey and fake.

This explains it perfectly. I'm 23 but I still like to watch "teen" movies from time to time and I have yet to find any after the date of 2014 that are good. I feel bad for current teens because they just keep getting handed cheesy shit :/ There are good shows but basically no good movies

@@CheerUp2 i don’t know when the edge of seventeen was made but that’s one of the most down to earth teen movies that doesn’t feel too forced as the problems she has is something teens face today but now most teen movies focus boys or just basic Romance

Are we just gonna ignore how powerless the other female classmates look in the period scene? As if they can't do anything to stop the boys making fun of Lily? Why do they make women so helpless in this "girl power" movie?

A lot of the actual good films that come out recently are indie and smaller companies like A24 films. But teen and kid catered movies are just......garbage since the start of 2015. Its re-boot after re-boot done poorly.

Agreed. Everything is about money and demographics now. Like, that's always been the case, but it's extreme now. This movie could be summed up entirely by one thought process: "oh let's just tag whatever is trending on social media and put it in a movie with nothing of substance to actually back it up!" There's nothing there. It's just a shell designed to score easy points and money.
