1996's the craft is one of my all-time favorite movies. the fashion, the music, the acting, the message. it all brings me so much joy, which is pretty funny considering how dark the subject matter is. when they announced the craft sequel i was understandably concerned about it, and while in some ways it exceeded my expectations, in other ways, it failed. here are my thoughts on the craft: legacy.

I agree. If you look at them in the class rooms, they blend into the background. Which should NEVER happen to vital or important characters. It also kills any sort of individuality that girls like these, would have. If the director wanted to stick with the horrible "cutesy" look the film had, then have them dress in Cottagecore. If you look on tik tok there are plenty of wiccans-the original magic that inspired the caft-that have the Cottagecore look or have this alternative look to them. That way we can pick these girls out of a crowd, but also have a semblance of understanding as to why no one likes them. For me the person in charge of costuming should have been fired for this reasoning.

@thebinlgbtisbabadook7832 3 года назад
@@kittygrimm7301 Yup, in The Legacy, dabbling in magic was taken sooo lightly. It was obvious that there were no consultants, unlike in The Craft. Like, how can a below-novice level group of wannabe witch girls be able to conduct a feat as big as stopping time? In The Craft, the feats the girls performed, altgough amazing, remain simple and quite believable. The Craft was also logical in a sense that the more they practice, the better they got, and the larger the feats they were able to perform. In The Legacy, I find it hard to believe that the characters are able to perform even the lowest magic trick. Why? Because witchcraft acts require overwhelming determination and desire for the feat or act or spell you want to get done. Sarah, Nancy, Rochelle, and Bonnie all have backgrounds that justifies how much and how badly they want the things they want, and that's why their magic was effective. Their desperation drives the force. But in The Legacy, all the kiddos do not have enough motivation. They are not sad enough nor angry enough. They don't even have any emotions when doing the acts. Magic has laws. Whether the filmmakers believe in magic or not, I wish they took into consideration that magic has laws just like nature.

A female character being powerful doesn't mean she's a Mary Sue. I haven't seen this remake but wasn't the main character in the original also more powerful than the others and could make things happen without trying too hard. Captain Marvel is not a Mary Sue. She's powerful, yes, but she worked really hard to become a pilot, then got powers by accident. Then she is trained to be a Kree warrior so it makes sense why she's good when her powers are unleashed for real. Also at this point Mary Sue is used for any female character who's good at something. Male characters who are equally good never get this complaint. People call Rey from Star Wars a Mary Sue for her force powers, and being a good pilot but have no problem with Luke or Anakin being good at the same things. In Star Trek 2009, Kirk solves the test that's supposed to be impossible and he's promoted to captain by the end of the film even though he has little experience. If a female character did this there would be endless complaints. I'm not saying the writing female characters is always good and can't be criticized but there's definitely a double standard.

Honestly the period scene would’ve be better if it went like this: she felt it coming and asked to leave (she’s shy and the new girl so she didn’t explain why) the teacher denied it, then she insisted without explaining until she got “exposed” but the teacher still denied it so she stopped. None of the other girls were there, all of her classmates in that class were assholes that didn’t help her at all, so we see her slowly crumbling down while the classmates giggle. At the end of the class she zooms out of the classroom and that’s when we see the pool of blood (have the guy that’s supposed to “fall” for her react the loudest). She only first meets the other girls in the hall/bathroom. This way we can establish the toxic patriarchal way of thinking, the way that affects the main character and the bullies, plus we can antagonize the other students and make the girls stand out meanwhile being a more relatable and understandable experience.

Brujería, voodoo, Santeria, etc...and rather than have the girls of color act as her back up band, let each one shine with a more fleshed out back story. Bringing the O.G. cast back would also have been awesome. I agree every generation needs their own cult movies however studios, producers, writers and directors SHOULD make an effort to create and deliver quality stuff. Teens and kids aren't stupid they can handle dark/ harsh themes and character development. A good movie doesn't need to be pretencious or artsy or edgy to be good. A good or at least memorable movie needs to feel REAL. Characters we can sympathize with, situations we can relate, depict actions to make us say "What would I do? Oh, yeah, exactly that or go, hell no! and even somthing morally gray like I get, not for me thou" as well as the repercurssions derived from them. That's it. DELIVER A DECENT MOVIE.

Some advice from an adult woman for younger women: whenever I bled through in class, I would sit and wait until the end of class, and whisper to the closest girl in my class that I needed some help. Then, when everyone is leaving, the girl would hang back with me and she would either ask the teacher for some assistance, or if she had a jacket or flannel, she’d let me wrap it around my waist (hiding the bum) and I’d make an escape to the bathroom and give her the jacket back asap. It’s a great way to bond with another girl in your class, avoid involving a male teacher or any other potential problems. If you feel comfortable with the teacher and nobody else in a class, just stay after the class and pretend to slowly pack your stuff up. Either way, if you’re embarrassed, don’t be. It’s a normal bodily function that has some sanitation problems, but NOTHING ELSE. Make sure you clean up properly, practice some self love, and be safe. If anyone makes fun of you for your period, make fun of them for being so immature. 💜💜

I’m on the older side of this target demographic and while I do actually like some of the costumes, I’m pretty disappointed with the lack of development with the other girls. It feels like representation just for the sake of it. I’d love to have a dark skinned witch to relate to feels like Tabby was solely there to spout one liners and that’s it.

Great analysis. I think the issue is not with the period of the '90s vs the '20 and generational differences but with the fact that the first movie is good with well developed characters while the second is badly done.

One of the reasons why The Craft has survived for so long and is so well remember today is because it was an actual horror/thriller movie. This movie looks like what Disney would have made had it made The Craft. I hope they make an actually scary, thrilling reboot for the craft next. But why bother it's not like you can add to a movie that's already excellent.

I loved the craft, it's just super iconic. Ask any person who has seen it once and they cann say at least twenty five lines from the movie, minimum. People should learn that just because a movie is iconic, it doesn't mean a sequel is going to be good (Mean girls 2, Cube 2, etc) just leave iconic movies alone.

I don’t think the outfits are comparable to Euphoria since the outfits in Euphoria are extremely character specific and make since based on their own individual back stories. Where as in Legacy there’s no real correlation other than being somewhat “trendy”. I still think they look like the clearance section at the outlet mall.
@JillWouters
@JillWouters 3 года назад
Legacy to me is an underachieved movie. It had the potential to do soooo much more, go so much deeper, yet it remains too much on the surface. The character development is sad. I can't even remember the names of the other 3 witches, supposed headcharacters. Except perhaps for Frankie, but she's super extra.

Thank you! That's the difference! The good remakes and sequels are the ones that still know how to keep the original audience while pulling in new audiences. Don't remake Edward Scissorhands and turn it into a sunshine quirky Twilight love story. Keep it Goth and dramedy. The new Clueless TV show sounds awful too.
@assembled1855

@@sumoni But the movie is not much of a full reboot unlike The Amazing Spider Man films and it's is still set in the same universe as The Craft. Did you even watch Tokyo Drift which is still connected to F&F films and Split which is connected to Unbreakable film?
@sumoni
@sumoni 2 года назад
@@assembled1855 Split is within the same universe and it's very much its own film. Unlike this one where the meeting of the girls, the use of magic to change the cute bully boy, and etc are taken directly from the original. Throwing Nancy in there at the end is literally the only way they could justify calling it a sequel, while their original intention was to have this be a remake. But fans reacted poorly to that concept so they said it was a sequel instead. There's nothing "soft" about this reboot to me.

i really wonder why they had to make Nancy the mother of Lily : isn't Nancy supposed to be kind of doomed and crazy because she did a bad use of her powers? it could've been an interesting plot line to have Lily being part of a doomed family tree of witches but instead it's just... here? and we have to nod and smile?
@mysteriiis
@mysteriiis 3 года назад
She was written as doomed and crazy. Which is one of the biggest problems with the original. The poor chick, the black chick, and the generic outcast chick are all exposed as worthless. Only our bland, basic lead gets to have power. Fixing that piece of utter nonsense is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed Legacy.

It's because lilly had to be the legacy of Nancy. Nancy invoked Mano who has the ultimate power for evil doings and it drove her crazy which is why she didn't want lilly to know that she passed that kind of power at least what she thought was evil witchcraft to her daughter like a curse. They basically took out the main teaching in the original Craft.

I liked your review of this movie. My wife is a longtime fan of the original. I'd actually seen Legacy first with her a few nights ago (it was her first time seeing it, too). We didn't enjoy it for most of the reasons you mentioned. I saw the original the next night and really enjoyed it. You said in the end that fans of the original may not really enjoy this and it's more for a newer audience, but I feel like it constantly makes nods to the original that in order to understand what's going on, you have to see the original. Like, the light as a feather scene in the original helped me better understand the magic system in their world. In Legacy, it felt like they could just do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted with no need to grow their powers.
