Sarah you look so beautiful and healthy. Ever since that surgery the old Sarah has continued emerging. Obviously the hard work hasn’t slowed your progress. Love seeing it. Can’t wait to see how the fall and winter gardens produce for you. You two are so goal oriented and work well together as a team.
My son just built two hoop raised bed covers for me and I'm growing a fall crop of vegetables. Here in NJ we can have frost as early as November 1st. Hoping our hard work pays off and our small Honestead can enjoy a few fall veggies. Love how your greenhouse looks. Thanks for sharing. God bless. 🙏💗🌻🙏💗🌻
You mentioned Kohlrabi & we both burst out laughing 😂 Andrew asked me to come down to the big garden (I’m disabled don’t get down there much) because his red cabbages were growing weird.. Andrew that’s kohlrabi not red cabbages they’re over there 🤣🤣🤣🤣....
I tried kohlrabi for the first time this year because it was a freebie. They never grew more than two inches high. I'm not sure what went wrong, because my cabbages were the happiest plants in my whole garden.
@@annebrunner9698 If you have some on hand, they make a tasty kohlrabi ice cream... who would think? But it was a pleasant surprise and a yummy alternative to store bought ice cream.
It's so satisfying to watch you clean things up around the farm. I wish I had an extra set of hands to help me. Don't suppose Kevin has a single, rich brother?? lol 👐
Q: would you mind doing an experiment video of how much your greenhouse plants will grow with 9,8,7 hours versus 10 hours of sunlight? I live in zone 2/3 in Northern Canada. We don’t get a whole lot of light even in the fall… Would be curious as to what would work. Thank you 🍂🌻🦃 Monday is Thanksgiving in Canada… Happy Thanksgiving ! We are thankful for your channel🍁🍄🌻
Good morning from Florida. Really enjoy watching your channel it is kind of refreshing and quite the workout today cleaning up all those beds and getting them ready for planting. Can't wait to see the finished product, when everything starts growing just like last winter. You all had a amazing Winter garden last year! How is the bull calf doing??
@@stanleypennock2118 Radish greens are delicious! They've become my favorite greens. They do have a strong flavor, though, so people who like mild flavors wouldn't like them.
@Nees Argon. You can see about the calfs by clicking on the link at the end of this current video. It's the one that says, "Will this calf ever be her baby."
If you would go back up to where it shows Kevin&Saras picture (Left side) & where Living traditions homestead (432K sub) Click on LTH it will take you to all their videos. You will find the latest videos. hope this helps???
How has the weather and fires down there. Hope all is well. I have a close friend in Sydney but I haven't heard from him in a while. You all stay safe.
We are just now coming into spring. The east coast, including Sydney, is expecting a wetter than usual Summer, because there is a la Nina weather pattern over the Pacific. In my neck of the woods that is unlikely to have an effect, so a hot dry Summer is likely on the way. As an extremely isolated city in an isolated country, we are currently in a healthy bubble, like New Zealand. Please stay safe, wear masks, socially distance. It is disturbing to see what is happening elsewhere. (Edited for clarity)
@@helengarrett6378 La Nina causes wet summers in the north and east in Australia, and possibly more cyclones ( like hurricanes but rotating the opposite way). It doesn't influence weather much on the west coast where the Indian ocean is more important. We will likely have fires, but hopefully our government has kept on top of the controlled burns which keeps the fuel load down. Fingers crossed that your fires are extinguished soon.
How cold will your winters get? I have been kicking around ideas on a greenhouse and we are in Indiana. Winters get cold but it normally fluctuates a lot so it’s not real cold for very long. I have some ideas. Lol. I was just curious how those greenhouses hold up and if the plastic lasts long. Thank you and stay safe! - Tom “Outdoors and Country Living”
"IF WE LOVE YOUR VIDEOS?" you kidding me? Hahaha who wouldn't? I love seeing the subscriber count climb! This last year its just blossomed! I remember when it was 25k!!! You guys are amazing! I love watching this channel grow like your homestead has!
Inspiring video to watch while sipping my morning coffee. My garlick and shallots are in as of last weekend here in NC and a few fall veggies a week before that Working with lettice inside hydroponics for the first time and loving fresh greens every day for the two of us. Thanks for the growing inspiration.
I'm in WNC and have baby lettuce and beets growing. It's really exciting to feel the weather changing and getting cooler but still have plants producing. Good luck with your garden.
Did not know about the need for 10 hours or more daily of sunlight. I always learn so much from you both. I have been watching your channel for close to 2 years now. How do you cook your kohlrabi? I have never tried it. Would love to know how you prepare it. Thank you.
Kevin I’ve known about kohlrabi for years but I’ve never tried it yet and I have no idea how it should be consumed or prepared. Please give a description of what it’s like and how you prepare it?
We also discovered kohlrabi recently and has successfully grown it in the Spring with a Fall crop on the way. We use it in green breakfast smoothies, salads, soups, roasted veggie mix, and even desserts - Kohlrabi ice cream.
Kohlrabi is a great plant. You can use the leaves for greens if you like. I don't use the leaves. But the bulbs are delicious. They taste very much like a blend between, cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. They're best, not as woody inside, when they're the size of a large golf ball or a small tennis ball. Wash them, submerge them in cold water. Bring up to a boil, turn off heat and cover for 10 minutes. Then drain off all of the water, because the water will be quite bitter. Cut them in half and add them to a small amount of fresh water. Add in about 1/4 stick of sweet salted butter, season with salt and pepper. Warm them up until the butter is fully melted, and then serve them as a side dish. They're very tasty, enjoy them. GBY 🙏🏻
I’m moving somewhere subtropical that has stinging nettle and I can’t wait! I currently live in the tropics, so we don’t have it growing here. I’ve got so many uses for it on my to-do-list, the biggest of which is adding to the compost pile as an activator and for fertilizer, too. As Sarah said it also is used in smaller amounts for medicinal uses, one of which my Grandmother taught me as a kid, which is as an anti-histamine.
We had stinging nettle all over our neighborhood softball lot when I was a kid! We all got a free timeout when we got “itch weed”! We were able to stop & scratch without penalty! 🤣
HOW TO KEEP FLIES AWAY! Fill a Zip Lock Bag with water. Add penny's into a bag close tightly. Hang in the area's you want to keep flies away. The flies think it's a spider webs and will stay away. Somebody shared this with me today!
That is a very good size greenhouse and you have it set up for easy use (with hoops for netting) How many pounds a season do you estimate per year? Maybe you dont get much snow? Peace from MN
Thanks for your videos you make for us! Your farming work is very interesting and rewarding! Suggest growing Chayote marrows! They rank and like to grow on a structure. Also, I believe in planting according to moon phases! !🌕!🌑!🌕! As example, - I had red mealie/maize seed which i prefer to the ordinary yellow seeds. I used to soak them overnight so that seeds swelled up, planted next day: they germinated quicker! I also soaked sunflower seeds! ! 🌻🌽🌻🌽 ! Do some research on planting by moon phases, plants grow better I found!
Hi, Guys! Always enjoy your videos! Do you mind if I correct your pronunciation of "Rouge d"Hiver'? "Rouge" is pronounced like the stuff you put on your cheeks when you want them to look pinker; it means "red." "D'Hiver" is pronounced "deee-váyr"; the second syllable is accented, and rhymes with "where"; it means "of Winter." So the name tells you that the plant is red and grows in the Winter.
I love you guys, thanks a lot for all the sharing information. Sarah you look so beautiful, your energy is so contagious. Blessings and peace over your family.
Serra I got very excited when I heard you say you have aswagandha plant ,, it’s Avery good medicinal plant old old ayurveda,, and is mixed with a lot of other herbs for various treatments. It is also good in increasing immunity. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 You know and have studied your herbs well 👍🏼👍🏼Great.
None of our squash plants did any good this year because of squash bugs. About mid August I decided to take a chance and planted a few zucchini and yellow squash seeds in a different part of the garden. We are now harvesting them and NO SQUASH BUGS!!!! One of the yellow squash plants has 10 small squash on it!
Daylight savings changes really don't affect the hours of daylight exposure. the length of time the sun is in the sky does. But I agree that the light is necessary for the growing times of the Plants. I really enjoy watching your channel a lot and have successfully used some of your advice. Thank you for your videos. I am looking forward to retiring early and beginning my Homestead experience as an ex-pat in another country. My wife is Ecuadorian.
I didn't see any amendment to the soil in your raised bed? Since you're planting mostly leafy greens, a healthy dose of Blood Meal watered in would be beneficial. Very good, inexpensive, Organic source of Nitrogen. TYFS, Stay Safe and Well Mark and Rosa
Another excellent video. You are both terrific presenters of factual, practical information. I expect you will surpass 1/2 million subscribers by Christmas. Blessings to you both and many thanks for the time, energy and dedication required.
Sarah, you are looking so radiant! Have you changed anything to do so? I know lots of people would be interested to hear anything you can share.... you keep doing what you do x
You made me curious about when I, on the Gulf Coast, would be below 10 hrs of daylight. I went to the NOAA website and was very surprised to find that on the Winter Solstice, I get 10 hrs and 15 minutes of daylight! I have been considering a greenhouse but wasn't sure if it would be worth it. Thanks for the tip about daylight and now I may make the investment in the greenhouse after all. If I use the shade cloth, it will help in July and Aug as well. Very useful information all around. Thanks!
Glad you tried the fall zucchini. I also suggest looking into lemon squash from Baker Creek. They are pretty tolerant of squash bugs and with regular harvesting provide a lot of REALLY good tasting summer squash through the summer. Also, tatsoi will do pretty well in the winter garden for Missouri high tunnels.
I don't know where exactly you guys are located but the Ozarks have a reputation for poor soil. I am wondering how likely it is that one can have success on a homestead in the area around (say 30-40 mile radius of) Springfield. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Pretty amazing you could have so many weeds come through just the seams! That's Missouri for you, crazy weed pressure. :) Ive got some more cleanup to do in my own garden. That's very interesting that you know the date when your daylength gets too short. Have you ever considered adding supplemental lighting? LED lights are pretty cheap to run. I'm really considering a small greenhouse with a light now. I've grown a few plants indoors with supplemental light all winter before. Never seen a planting square before either. Might be a good thing for me as I always have trouble with spacing. ;)
Good morning from Texas. I do enjoy your videos. You and Kevin are an inspiration to the the rest of us out here trying to make our homesteading dreams come true. I've been working towards homesteading for the past 6 years. I finally purchased my property last year and moved in in January. My journey feels so slow but I'm getting there. I'm still working so I can prepare my property for homesteading. Fences/pens, implements and gardening products. My biggest draw back is I'm doing it completely alone...no Kevin 😊 so I do all the things he does and the things you do. Sometimes I have to ask for help when it's just impossible to do something it takes two sets of hands. I love this life and can't wait to be a full time homesteader! Your videos are so helpful and makes me feel I'm not totally alone in this journey. Thank you and God Bless. 💕💕
Stinging Nettle is very effective for head and chest congestion..it’s a fantastic expectorant! .....once you get the congestion, there’s only way to get it out and it’s messy! However, you can get rid of a head or chest cold in about 18 hours. Just drink a LOT of water to get things moving and get a LOT of tissues or soft towels....it will seem like you’re getting worse because everything is coming up....so lots of coughing, etc..you’re very “active”.. I don’t grow it, but get it in capsules from the health store. Works very well.
Have you ever experimented with supplementing the lack of 10 hours of light with LED lighting? There is a couple in Canada who grow greens in their basement.
Hello Friends! On min. 23:07, talking about "reaching to harvest" if is convenient, try to use a stick of about 1"x1" ("= inches) or a 2"x4" cut in half for the side of the 3 1/2" so you get a 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" strong enough and about 7' ('= feet) long so you place it by the width of your bed leaning on the wood sides nicely so you don't hurt your lettuce, and if you need a longer than normal reach point where to try to lean, you can lean with one hand in the stick and with the other cut your selected plants. That way you don't get your hands too dirty touching the dirt if you don't want to. You can make two once cutting the 7' or 8' so you may have two to work one for each of you, if you want :-). You can or may stick or staple the packet picture of the seeds you're planting if you have an empty packet front picture in each row.
Oh my, I need coffee! You guys work so well together and make me tired watching you work lol. I have to say I wish I were your neighbor lol. Are the folks about done where they can get back? Have you butchered the pigs yet? Jenenda 🍅🍅🍅
Love you guys! Wondering if you guys need to think more about titles - 'neglected & summer' are not keywords usually found together. How will interested viewers find this video? You guys have the best videos and share so much information! Help people find you.
I’m sure you know but. ( I had some real issues with fungus with some of my tomatoes and tomatillos. Looked up on u tube and found a place that talked about a certain solution of peroxide and water.... spoke of spraying tops and bottoms of leaves and stems... mine were verrry sorry so l sprayed ,but then I dumped probably 1/3 to 1 gal of same solution right around the root base....brought my watering down to 1/3 or so, and w/I - 3 weeks! Lots of new growth! For a cherry I got another 200 and I initially thought it was dead!
Sarah, I take Holy Basil prescribed by my naturopath, do you happen to know how fresh Holy Basil is used? I doubt we could keep it alive where we are in Canada but during the summer it's possible!
What planting zone are you in? I'm curious about doing some winter veg - I do perennial herbs. I'm in NY, but on Long Island which is zone 7a and I think I can do some - I only have a small raised bed that I'm thinking of covering - I know I can do some lettuce But I would love to try beets. I loved watching this one fall is my favorite except for the fact that I'm going to miss my fresh tomatoes! I do still have okra that continues to produce slowly and as long as it's flowering I'm leaving it in!
Have you ever made stinging nettle recipes? Soup is one of my favourites - it's delicious! I also have a request: Could you please credit the music you're using? I'd love to find it online - you have good taste in music. ;-)
Would like to do a fall garden, would like more lettuce and spinach for salads...this is the time of year that we travel down south to see our families during the holidays and won't be home to keep up maintenance on the garden...and...I still have LOTS of frozen tomatoes still to get canned...I have done two canning sessions and will have at least 2-3 more canning to be done...we did grow a LOT of tomatoes this year..:)
Good morning from Shreveport Louisiana. Looking good on your planting for the fall. Its clean up day here as well. Enjoyed you guys with my morning java. That I would love to grow here.
We grow rocks and blocks here!! Going to have to have a lot of compost and topsoil brought in when we get our greenhouse set up.!!! We have about 2 inches of topsoil then bedrock. Everyone on our road uses raised bed for gardening. Not a fan of raised beds because of the amount of water they require. But when in the Ozarks you got to do what works! This ain't Mi. !! Where everything is flat, and you can dig as deep as you want!
Can't wait to see your fall garden grow. Thank you for the perennial herb tour in your pots, it's given me a really good idea!! Oh! Will you be topping off your raised bed with more compost?
Sarah you look wonderful. You are so of energy and loving. And what a wonderful husband Kevin is. You 2 are so blessed with each other and your 2 beautiful daughters. I love all your tips on different things. You have taught us so much. You are certainly an inspiration to us all. Take care and God Bless.
🦆🐟💦 on another channel they were talking about RAM pumps for water. Thought of your ponds, in theory they use the gravity of the water energy to push the water. Maybe an aeration idea.
To cold here in northern MI, unless the greenhouse is heated ( I wish). Have a few low tunnel's for finishing thing's off and praying for a really nice fall. But on to planning next year's garden and getting my seed's. Thank's for the video. Stay safe and healthy. God bless
So good seeing you guy's working together, planting the foods you both like never heard of some of them. Sorry it takes me a few day's now to watch the videos some I may never watch but I'm still supporting you guys. God bless you and your family.
