They have pretty much perfected the shipping of baby chicks. They have been shipping live chicks through the US postal service since 1918. You do occasionally have a loss. But, you have losses on the farm too.

Our first time and our first 6 died. Held up in Detroit. Sent out replacements and this time were held up in MN for 3 days so we went to a local hatchery thinking they were for sure arriving dead again but our Postal worker said there is peeping so I skedattled as quick as I could and was terrified how many died but they were all ALIVE! We were so giddy sitting in the small town post office parking lot getting them to drink and eat. Monday is 3 weeks and we have 24 chicks and all are safe, happy and healthy. We spend hours throughout the day with them. We have a tent and they are so excited when we unzip it 24 birds flying out and running around. We actually made their dust bath right on the floor in front of the tent and watching them is so awesome. We are picking up our meat chickens in July and 5 more baby chicks.

They've been mailing chicks for over a hundred years, I was rolling my eyes when you were getting so hysterical about it. The funny thing is you're living the way we all grew up 60 years ago and I think it's awesome.

We just got 10 in the mail. We normally buy locally but no one around us had any chicks. We got Rhode Island reds from tractor supply.

Chickens love fermented grains, and it reduces how much they eat and is good for a change. Pigs thrive on excess milk and whey from your own cows or neighbours. Its ok to let it go sour too - good for their gut. And feeding them some natural charcoal helos with smell. charcoal 🎉

Homesteading, no matter on what scale is a great opportunity for children and adults. Sometimes tiring, but at the end of the day, a rewarding experience. I think it is great for children! You are lucky to have a good chicken feed source. For some reason around our area, we can't get anything that resembles real food.+

I prefer to get mine local just for the less stress on chics, but the place I get mine from don’t do Cornish cross meat chics so every year I have that nail biting stress. Glad all yours made it I lost 3 within 24 hours .

I work at a Famuly Farm & Home, we get our chicks in the mail for the store and unfortunately some don't make it. The Bantams in particular have a hard time making the trip in those boxes.

How was it to process your first meat bird? Because I bought some and just the mental toughness it takes to even consider processing the first one is more than I'd considered lol

processing day is not easy, but after the hard part all the others parts of it are so rewarding to know that you grew your own food

I will never mail order chicks again. Some were dead on arrival and several died by the next morning because they were just too weak no matter what I did. Watching them take their last breath devastated me.

I would NEVER order babies in the mail, ever. Hatch myself or buy them from local folk. This has to stop….it won’t, but it’s cruel and makes a weaker chicken from the stress of transport. IMHO
@seanburnette1816
@seanburnette1816 9 месяцев назад
If you've never ordered chicks by mail how would you know if it makes a weaker chicken or not? In my first hand experience, there is no difference in the fortitude of chickens shipped at birth and ones born and raised on one farm. They are actually very well adapted animals and are independent within hours of hatching, so give them a bit more credit. Also, they are not "babies", they are chicks. You do yourself and your livestock a great disservice by anthropomorphizing them and attach human qualities and traits to non-human animals.
