It is hard for many people when things are done "wrong". Cars are kind of holy cows of these days. Even 4wd "offroad" cars need to be spotless and scratch and bump free. When I worked in Africa those cars went to bushes, they had scratches and bumps. When paint surface broke they slapped in some greenish roof paint with a brush and it was good to go again. Those cars were TOOLS, NOT JEWELRY.

I have a 21 yr old F150 and my roof looked like yours, I tried spray can paint and realized I’ll need about 20 cans. So I bought a quart of rust oleum hi gloss white exterior oil base paint and brushed it on nice and thick, you would not believe how well it looks. It’s not picture perfect but it made me happy. And because it’s the roof only a helicopter can see the blemishes….lol. So thumbs up to you guys for making this video.

My brother & i painted my aunts 1988 Pontiac Grand Am with the horrid original paint..we prepared the body with paint stripper & fully sanded the body..we rented a Airless Paint Sprayer & used Rustoleum Self Primer Paint..We picked "Gold Leaf"Metallic Paint..after taping & masking everything we wet down the dirt the night before in the backyard next morning we shot the paint & it really looks great for a amateur paint job..No drips or runs my aunt was very happy with the looks..

Back in the late 1980‘s a co-worker who like to hunt in pretty rough areas in Washington State, Idaho and Oregon painted his truck with Rhino Liner (truck bed liner). Looked a little weird at first but it saved his truck from all the scrapes and scratches and small bumps from driving through thick sagebrush, overgrown fields and wooded areas. A homeowner on Santa Rosa Island in the panhandle of Florida painted his entire house with Rhino Liner colored the same color as the sugar sand found on the beach there. His was a concrete dome home, 3 stories tall. Looked great and survived a head-on hit from a hurricane. Cheers

I'm a 66 year old woman. My dad died when I was 17 and I had no close male relatives. I lived in an apartment in the city until I was 35. I used to help my dad with jobs at home. My mum wasn't into DIY. She died when I was 26. I taught myself, with the help of books, to do my own basic DIY. I grew to love it! Eventually I moved to the country to a house with a garden. I taught myself to garden. I still love to DIY. I think my husband (I won't even let him know where the key to the shed is) would go pale if I rocked up with a can of tractor paint and a roller 😂 However, next time my wheelbarrow goes rusty I'll be right on it😂 I don't even know where to buy tractor paint in the UK. I've used Rustoleum (red) and a roller on several of my Ford F150 and F250's over the years and then lettered them with the company name/logo and from 10 fit away they look great and I've never had anyone question things. Just make sure to slightly thin the quart can with either paint thinner, toluene or xylene in order to minimize the orange peel. I've also sprayed (white) Dupont Imron on a few trucks and tanks as well. It all turned out well and I stopped paying Maico and other paint shops for something I could successfully do myself.

Back in the '80s, I helped a friend of mine paint the roof of his Delta 88 with house paint. The vinyl had peeled off and the mastic left sort of an orange peel, so when it was done, the house paint didn't look that different from the original vinyl.

I used Van Sickle Tractor paint with their hardener to make it last a long time and not go chalky. I used Case Flambeau Red - which is really a deep orange and after three years it still has a nice shine. The best part is that you can touch up any minor scratches easily and the match is still good. Adding a clear coat would be the next thing to do, and you can wet sand the color coat to make it super smooth using it as a primer/filler so that the clear coat has no roller marks before you put it on. I suggest a spray application of the clear coat - a roller will only put new roller marks into the surface again. .
@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing 11 месяцев назад
Exactly! Tye ability to go high quality touch up is a great bonus!
@CorbinsDedah
@CorbinsDedah 11 месяцев назад
Van Sickle makes some fantastic products. When I worked at Sherwin Williams, we had several people use SherKem implement paint due to film hardness and gloss retention. If you prep and take your time, you can absolutely make it work. And while rolling it is okay, I would probably recommend a cup gun spray setup instead, to minimize orange peel or uneven application. Good results regardless.

I painted my 1980 Honda Civic with regular Rustoleum paint and a 4" roller. I just washed it first with no sanding and didn't thin the paint. It took a little more than a quart of paint and 1 foam roller. It cost about $30. I didn't like the color as much as I thought I would so I repainted it with a different color that turned out just fine. The paint held up well in the New Mexico climate of high altitude (lots of sun) and no humidity. Each coat took about half a day to do. If I get tired of the current color I can do a repaint with no trouble. I highly recommend this fix for older cars with paint cancer; you will be amazed at the transformation.

People might laugh and say it's cheap and tacky. But remember that paint they had on That Van was done by a Paint Sprayer at the Factory and it didn't hold all that well. What I'm trying to say is nothing last forever. Everything gets old and worn so why pay thousands of dollars on something u can do at home that just might last just as long or longer . In the end that Van looked great and it is an old Vehicle. Great Job .

I have painted several vehicles with VanSickle oil based implement paint(similar to this). Be aware that most of these enamels will crack and flake off of the flexible plastic parts like the bumpers. Also most of these types of paint do not have UV protection so they will get chalky and fade, (you might want to put rattle can automotive clear coat over it later to stop that). I also found Namptha to be a much easier thinner to use instead of mineral spirits, you get dry to the touch in 2-4 hours instead of 2-4 days.......overall really good for a roll on job.
@thejoyoffixing
@thejoyoffixing 11 месяцев назад
Very good points! It should be common sense, but plastic is a flexible substrate and if it’s impacted… you’re gonna get crackle. Seen it on 1000 factory paint jobs. Or anything you paint with an enamel over a forgiving substrate. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah there’s a lot of ways to make it shinier. Could paint on 6 or 6 thinner coats with flotrol and a brush. But we were just going for one color and stop the rust. All depends on what you’re going for. I’d do it differently on a nicer car.

I had an 86/f250 with a moderately rusted hood (think it might have had an engine fire at some point ) i sanded the hood to clean metal with an orbital sander , spray painted it with a can of rustoleum primer , then put on one coat of rustoleum gloss black with a foam roller , had several people ( including the guy i got the truck from ) ask me how much it cost to get my hood painted , when i told them $10 they all thought i was joking , one of them wanted me to paint his car for him . That whole hood took me less than 2hrs including sanding .That hood looked like the day i painted it , when i got rid of the truck 4 years later . If you got a beater in need of paint just break out the sander and buy $10-20 worth of rustoleum and go to town , it will be money well spent and you will be surprised at the results , just sayin

I have no time for these people. At the end of the day you're looking for a car thats all the same color without paying thousands of dollars or setting up some sort of spray booth in your garage. For a 20 year old car with 200,000 miles on it and some minor body damage... just getting out the roller and sander is a move I'm SHOCKED more people don't make. Bulletproof paint job. Can be done in very little time. Costs almost nothing (you can paint an entire car with a roller and rustoleum for around $60 if you really tighten your belt and penny pinch). This isn't like some sort of ridiculous tiktok life-hack trash... it's a legitimate way to stop the rust and get your call all 1 color again. The finish?.... it'll be as good as you're willing to put the time into. I could have made this van mirror polished, but that level of finish wasn't important. I was more than happy with the minimal texture and FARM TOUGH finish that the paint gave. It was an acceptable tradeoff for me, and I'll do it again in the future for SURE!

Hi, i saw a similar video about 12 years ago called the $50 repaint There were 2 cars from memory a early 70's dodge and a smaller GM sports coupe While i did not paint my car, i did use the techniques and done my box trailer, that came out great, so we done a friends caravan The issue was dont rush and do sections each day away from the wind - in the garage is fine, but also next day rub down the old paint, you probably take away 20-30% of the paint but you start with another nice level surface It was about 2 hours work per day for 7 to 10 days

I've painted trackers, trucks,cars, motorcycles, little red wagons and my wife's toe nails with rust-oleum. All with rollers and brushes. It gets rid of the rust.(which is what oleum means.) Some times it covers dirt too. I like the fact that after you have painted it you can wash it or not.
@KevinJames-yg9eu
@KevinJames-yg9eu Год назад
"oleum" is Latin for "oil", like how linoleum flooring is made out of linseed oil. The "oleum" in Rust-Oleum is because the original formula contained whale oil as a rust preventative.

You need to learn how to "roll and tip." Its a technique the guys use when painting boat hulls. You go over your sections you rolled on, while still wet and gently using tip of brush (and diluted paint) smooth out the orange peel. When done right you'll get a near mirror finish. Note: this is also how they used to paint vehicles too 😉
