Some crazy fun facts you guys missed: The Classical/spanish guitar on Who Needs You was recorded by John Deacon. Sheer Heart Attack was actually an older song that was going to be included in the album by the same name... imagine that!
Queen are responsible for my irrepressible love for music. They were my first musical love and are still my absolute favorite band. My first contact with Queen was a mixtape of my older brother, who got it from a schoolmate. After that I bought one LP after another from their catalog. My Top 5: 1. Queen II 2. A Night At The Opera 3. Queen I 4. A Day At The Races 5. Sheer Heart Attack (HM: 6. Jazz, 7. News Of The World, 8. The Game, 9. Innuendo, 10. The Works)
My favourite band, since the the very beginning. Easy choice. First five (or seven!). Done. Queen II is my favourite ever album and album cover. Can we not have a best seven?! (7. Jazz 6. News Of The World) 5. A Night At The Opera 4. Queen 3. A Day At The Races 2. Sheer Heart Attack 1. Queen II
1.Queen 1. 2.Queen 2. 3.Sheer heart attack. 4. news of the world 5.The works(yeah yeah.. it's their best 80's album) honourable mentions. jazz,A day at the Races,Innuendo.
Great to hear 'Drowse' get some love. One of Roger's finest...those words at the end of the song have always stayed in my memory - "have my eggs poached for breakfast, I guess"... just a great Roger song.
I always loved Roger's tunes. They remind me of The Who. I like John's song's but i always found his tunes were aimed at the ladies whereas Roger's songs are for the boys....and the girls lol. My top 5 are...1.Sheer Heart Attack. 2. Queen II. 3. Jazz. 4. A Night at the Opera. 5. A Day at the Races (although this is a tough one because i would likely play News of the World more often).
Great show! My picks: 1) Sheer Heart Attack; 2) Innuendo; 3) Night at the Opera; 4) Queen II; and 5) Day at the Races. I was very fortunate to see Queen live in London, UK at the Wembley Empire Pool Arena in 1978 - excellent concert, one of the best I ever saw. It was their News of the World tour, so that album would be my honorable mention.
First song I heard from Queen was "Killer Queen", I thought it was a novelty song, but otherwise didn't think much of it. A friend told me someone he knew bought "Sheer Hear Attack" and he didn't like it. Me and my friend used to record songs from the radio. He recorded "Prophets Song" and didn't know what band it was. But we listened to it over and over. A couple weeks later, I spent the night at his house, we would wait for songs on the radio to record all night and watch the late night tv shows that played music. (This was yearsss before MTV) Suddenly the "Bohemian Rhapsody" video comes on. Keep in mind, we never heard the song before and the album had yet to come out. We found out it was Queen, but didn't know the title of the song. We were both shocked, after it was over that's all we talked about. That's when we realized this was the same band that did "Killer Queen" and "Prophets Song". The next day we rode our bikes to the record store. Thats when we saw "Queen II". we figured "Bohemian Rhapsody" was on it, because the album cover was the same as the video. Checking the track listing didn't matter, because we didn't know that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the name of the song. Took it home listened to it, actually stayed up all night listening to it over and over. great album, but the song was not on it. Finally "A Night At The Opera" came out, a couple weeks later. I didn't have money to buy it, so me and my friend (same one) talked another friend into buying it. Then talked him into lending it to us. He got the album back about 2 months later. One day he came to my house to get it. My parent weren't home and we wouldn't let him in. We had him come to the kitchen window, I had the screen off. My friend held one end while handing to him. A one point he was playing tug of war with the Queen album. I was rolling on the floor laughing Now decades later we talk about it and laugh our asses off. Then I ended up getting it for either Christmas or my birthday. A little side note, My copy must have been a second printing, because the cover was glossy. Our friends copy was a flat white. And because it was a flat white, when he got it back it was pretty dirty. We tried to clean it, but that only made it worse.
Great story 😅 When I was 16, my parents went off for a one week holiday and gave my brother and me money to buy food. The first thing we did, as soon as they closed the door behind them, we went to the record shop in the nearby city, to buy all the records we have always wanted with that money.... 😅 I bought a night at the opera and a day at the races and my brother Queen 2 and Sheer heart attack. We were on a shopping spree and it was fantastic 😅
Great show Hack, Martin, and Pete here are my top 5 favorite Queen albums: 1. Sheer Heart Attack (1974) 2. The Game (1980) 3. Queen ll (1974) 4. News of the World (1977) 5. Queen (1973) Honorable mentions: Jazz (1978) A Night at the Opera (1975)
Once again, it's cool to see the three of you on the same show again. Here are my top five Queen albums: 1. The Game 2. A Day at the Races 3. Queen II 4. News of the World 5. Queen I
Great presentation Hack. My Top 5 is very simple , pick any 5 from the first 6 albums and can also pick Innuendo from their later years catalogue. One of the greatest bands of our times. Amazing frontman and vocalist probably the best ever, virtuouso guitarist par excellence, amazing drummer in RT and bassist in JD. One of the most creative bands in Rock history and who did things with panache and oomph. Amongst my top 10 bands of all time any genre.
1. Jazz (1978) 2. A Day At The Races (1976) 3. A Night At The Opera (1975) 4. Sheer Heart Attack (1974) 5. The Game (1980) 6. Innuendo (1991) - VERY underrated (Innuendo and The Show Must Go On are stellar!) 7. Queen (1973) 8. News Of The World (1977) 9. A Kind Of Magic (1986) 10. Queen II (1974) 11. The Miracle (1989) 12. The Works (1984) 13. Hot Space (1982) 14. Made In Heaven (1995) 15. Flash Gordon OST (1980)
At last, somebody else who really likes The Loser in the End (seen loads of other sites where this is not liked/ranked near the bottom of all their discography).
@@mjp8648 Really? That's sad! It's my third favorite Roger Taylor song. My top three are "Drowse," "Fight from the Inside," and "The Loser in the End."
1) news of the world 2)night at the opera 3) sheer heart attack 4) day at the races 5) jazz . I know old school fans like me usually love queen 1 and 2. Im more into Queen from 74 to 80
1. Queen II 2. Sheer Heart Attack 3. A Night at the Opera 4. News of the World 5. A Day at the Races Hack - I have never heard of a guy named Roger Deacon. Who is he? 😜😆 Great episode.
Martin, I agree with you that Queen's 70's output is genius, as is Judas Priest's as you rightfully stated. I will however add another hard rock band whose 70's output is if not on the same level as the two aforementioned bands, but is at least not far behind them and that band is the Scorpions.
1.A Night at the Opera 2.Jazz 3.A Day at the Races 4.News of the World 5.Queen II Honorable mention: Live Killers - The first full album I ever heard from Queen. Been a lifelong fan ever since. Queen & Innuendo
Wow, where to start? Hack: Freddie wrote Somebody to Love which appears on Day at the Races, not Night at the Opera. Perhaps, you meant to talk about You're my Best Friend which was written by JOHN Deacon. Roger TAYLOR is the drummer. No, Roger Deacon in there - you said it twice. Next, Martin: sorry to break it you, but Roger plays the rhythm guitar on Sheer Heart Attack. Brian only does the weird feedback "solo" - check your lner notes. Yes, this song in particular was making fun of the punkers. Apparently Freddie had a brief run-in with Sid Vicous. Pete: yes, Night at the Opera and Day at the Races are sort of mirror images to each other. It was thought of that way by the band too - hence the two titles being taken from Marx Brothers movies. Almost forgot - Fire and Water is by Free, not Bad Company. My top, by the way is: 1. Jazz, 2. Sheer Heart Attack, 3. Queen 1, 4. News of the World, 5. Night at the Opera.
One of my favourites is Flash Gordon - that album doesnt get enough respect - i mean sure its a soundtrack and its mainly instrumental but i love it. Flash theme, In The Space Capsule (Roger’s drumming is fire here) The Kiss (amazing vocal by Freddie) , the incredible Battle Theme (fking ROCKING 🤘) and Hero is an amazing track. I liken it to like a radio play of sorts, like a musical audio book with clever usage of film dialogue interspersed throughout. Its a wonderful record. My only complaint is the tracks are too short.
Tough call...listen to We Will Rock you: Live Killers. Could have changed title to: C'mon!😃 Live they are outstanding. Saw News, Jazz and Works tours. Studio they are JUST as good!!
While Queen did have proto thrash songs on their 1973 debut (i.e., Son And Daughter, Keep Yourself Alive, Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll and Liar), I still say Budgie introduced the first thrash song in 1973 with Breadfan, followed up in 1974 with Crash Course in Brain Surgery. But Queen's Stone Cold Crazy from 1974 is definitely one of the earliest ones, followed up by Sabbath's Symptom of the Universe in 1975, Heart's Barracuda in 1976, and Judas Priest's Dissident Aggressor and Styx's Miss America both in 1977.
One of the truly truly truly great bands. Today it's (1) Sheer Heart Attack (2) A Night at the Opera (3) II (4) Jazz (5) Queen (6) A Day at the Races (7) News of the World (8) Innuendo (9) The Works (10) The Game (11) It's A Kind of Magic (12) The Miracle. God save the QUEEN!
I really like the classic 70s Queen, but I don’t mind the early 80s. They wouldn’t be in my top 5 but I like the Game and even …. Hot Space. Yeah I said it, Hot Space. It probably stems from the fact I saw them both on The Game and Hot Space tours. Seeing them live is like an extra credit project that boost an Albums original grade. Thanks for the show!
Yes I was. I also had "Roger on the brain" and kept saying Roger Deacon instead of John Deacon. It was a long day 😴. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel. Cheers
Don't want to burst any Brian May bubbles but he did not play that Spanish guitar on Who Needs You. It wasn't even a guest guitarist (like Steve Howe on Innuendo)... It was our own John Deacon who played all the acoustic guitar on that song - also playing on a number of other Queen songs!
I agree that the 70's output is the strongest but it sounds on many like they went all downhill in a big fashion.. Really? Why is that? Still good songwriting, still quite varied, stilll good hooks.. Yes. Some of it is more dated and they did start with fillers beyond The Game but I still think Queen in the 80's is better than many other bands. Perhaps not the all time best but easily better than your average band. I rather listen to 80's Queen than Pink Floyd pre Atom Heart Mother, Dio in the 90's, Def Leppard post Hysteria, Gary Moore post early blues-years, Iron Maiden in the 90's or post Dance of Death. Yeah. Not bad at all - For me. If Queen only had 80's material they wouldn't be one of my favorite bands but I would still enjoy them rather much. My ranking? 5. Jazz 4. A Day at the Races 3. Sheer Heart Attack 2. A Night at the Opera 1. Queen II
Fire and Water is from Free Hack, not from Bad Company. I see how you confused the two seeing both are fronted by Paul Rodgers! Also, it's John Deacon and Roger Taylor, not Roger Deacon...haha
The hits have killed this band for me. I've gone back and listened to their earlier albums and ya much better but still not nearly enough of a draw for me to spend any time with. Guess you had to be there.
