Fun fact: using used cooking oil in a diesel engine is better for the engine (if properly filtered) than unused or brand new cooking oil. The cooking process heats the oil breaking up hydrocarbon bonds in the oil making it easier to combust.
I'm not surprised that it worked, Rudolf Diesel's original engine designs ran on peanut oil, however he switched to using petroleum based fuels because it was less expensive than plant based oils.
He switched because Dino diesel was a waste byproduct of the distillation process, referd to as “cracking”, to make gasoline. The lighter compounds vaporize first and are distilled out while leaving the heavier carbon chains behind. Ultimately you have grease left over and propane as one of the lighter chains. At the time there was no use for the intermediate chains like diesel so it was discarded as waste until Rudolph Diesel started using it in the Diesel engine. Heavy oil was used in shipping and is still used in a lot of the large ships today. At the time both peanut oil and Dino diesel where waste byproducts of the processing of oil and peanuts.
You can run ANY diesel on soy oil and vegetable oil, the diesel motor was originally designed to run on PEANUT OIL. So this is no big deal, I have ran pickups, semi and tractors on oil. I lost NO power had cleaner running and it smelled like burnt French fries going down the road. It will run down to about 40° then it will start to gell up but you can use pure ethanol to thin it out. 5 gallon into 100 gallon of soy oil. And LOTS of folks do this we just dont talk about it because there is NO ROAD TAX on it and due to that fact it is ILLEGAL unless you have road tax on it. And the oil has NOTHING to do with the tyranny issues they had.
@@hperryesq A quick check seems to indicate that that's determined on a state by state basis. A cursory examination seems to show that my state, Ohio, does not have a road tax on alternative fuels. And I can't find anything definitive at the Federal level, at least not in the quick poke around that I took. Of course, look further into it before doing it, specifically because it's not a cut and dried tax across the board.
Seriously lithium mining is just as bad as oil sands these smug electric idiots.. The fuel solution in america is b100 and e100 let these ass holes in the middle east fight themselves over who wrote a 2020 year old book
You can change your gender based on how you feel daily but not your exhaust, def/dpf.. Im in the process of doing a proper conversion on my 24v 5.9 cummins
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using any type of filtered oil as fuel in any diesel engine except ATF. Automatic transmission oil has friction enhancers that will eventually tear up the injection pump.
@@NoviceGarage Gotcha. At least it's a cheap part. Y'all should look into the Edge CTS2 with comp wiring kit. You would be able to monitor all your temps etc.. while testing all this stuff out
Biodiesel is much greener than Tesla, and you don't have to put money into a billionaire's pocket who uses African labor to make cobalt batteries. Veggie Oil > Tesla. :)
I have a 90 F350 7.3 IDI, I have been running free used fry oil for several years now. First I mix in roughly 3/4 gallon of old rotten free gas from the wrecking yard to thin it down to the consistency of diesel and use old pants to filter the first time then use a reusable 2 micron bucket filter. "Ole Bessy" runs like the wind and smells like rotten fish doing it!! Lol!
Wait, This dude said a gallon of vegetable oil is 140 calories. It says 1 tsp is 140, and there are 256 portions, so it would mean he fed the truck 30720..... and he did 3 gallons I think, which is 92160 calories. No wonder the truck is broken after this... He overfed it :)
To save your fuel pump with running that oil as fuel you need a pre warming tank for the oil to make the visosky run better and put less strain on the fuel pump.
@@johnathanmason2644 yeah with the cold oil running through the system will strain the fuel pump system to much. I saw a converted buss in South Florida that had a pre-warming fuel tank for the oil think it heated it up to about 200-225'
@@johnathanmason2644 because the federal fuel tax on diesel is 24.4 cents per gallon and in Texas, the diesel tax is 20 cents per gallon. The mob doesn't like losing 44.4 cents for every gallon of fuel burned.
I'm from the Caribbean, guys have been running used cooking oil since I was a kid and I'm almost 40. When they past by you smell fried food. My friends dads truck(Toyota diesel) ran on cooking grease. The trick his dad said was that you need to put in diesel every few tanks to avoid clogging. There is nothing fake about this, catch up.
@Novice Garage You guys should do a video where you put very dirty oil through a Brita Water Pitcher Filter. To see if it turns dirty oil into clean oil again that can be reused.
Cooking oil works but it needs to go through a distillation process. Otherwise running it strait will clog up injectors. There's a guy who use to drive a vegetable oil powered Hummer around here for years.
Isn't there supposed to be a converter kit installed?? A guy I know has one on his diesel truck (ironically he uses McD's oil) and he spends about $10 fuel / month. As a side note, a gas station in Greenville, TN that sells biodiesel costs so much more than regular diesel. That sounds kind of stupid to me.
The 7.3 is actually one of the best Diesel engines to use veggie oil in. The fuel rails are dead heads in the cast iron heads. So if you take the plugs off the opposite ends of where the fuel lines come in to the heads you can easily plumb the fuel rails with veggie oil on one side and the OEM sides get left plumed to the OEM tank. Then you just use a secondary pump and a transfer switch connected to the auxiliary tank for the oil. With the fuel rails being inside the heads the fuel will pre heat in the heads prior to the injectors. Just make sure you flip the switch back to the OEM tank 5mins from your destination so the OEM fuel system and heads are flushed and primmed with Dino diesel so you never run the risk of having oil that will gel in lower temps in the fuel system for start/warm up. Great system for longer 1hr plus drives but not good for short in town trips due to the warm up and then purge cycle needed to safely switch to the oil tank. Also make sure you run the oil through 1mic filters prior to putting in the tank. Particulates 1-5mic are what damage the injectors and system because the fuel bowl filter is usually 5-20mic depending on the brand. DM me for more information. I have several 7.3s and run them all on WVO and or black diesel on my ranch
How does the wiring work for switching from diesel to oil? Is there a two way switch for the main fuel pump and then when the switch is activated it turns on the oil pump simultaneously? I’m wondering how to prevent a momentary loss of fuel smoothly.
Guys, I think that last bit of cooking grease coming out of the container gave me the runs... Pretty neat it ran, but one can only wonder the long time ramifications of doing so. I know those old Mercedes Benz diesels eat that stuff up... There was a guy with an old 190d that ran it, I ended up behind the guy coming back from work multiple times. Had to hit up the local snack bar right away! (lived in the Netherlands back then).
Used veg oil will have moisture in it that will affect the running. Some ppl boil it off first. Pre heating the fuel in line before starting, heavy duty fuel pumps and no use of common rail diesels all help.
If it’s all filtered out it’s better for the earth that’s about it it’s way thicker than usual diesel so your fuel pump is doing a whole lot more work so it’s actually not better for your vehicle
Original Diesel engines were designed to run on Hemp oil. And it worked very well. These guys are off their rockers. If the oil isn’t properly processed, the engine will get clogged up in so many different areas. Processing and filtration is the key. Older Diesel engines, pre 2000. 10 micron filter or less. Farm supply has many options. Farmers could use it in older tractors. Good luck boys
What you need is an alternate tank with your make-shift fuel ... start it with regular diesel put a slight load on the engine ..headlights on bright ac motor on high etc ... then have a valve , electric , or manual operated to switch to the alternate fuel ... it would also be wise to take 4 or 5 feet of copper tubing & wrap it circular & smooth closest to the exhaust header as you can to warm it up before it hits the pump ... and strain the hell out of that fry oil several times ... trust me , this is the best way to pull this off successfully !! 😎
The truck engine ran fine, however after a few hours it began to complain about not getting $15 an hour and started to strike. It also would take periodic long breaks where it would listen to oldies music, prop up it’s rear wheels, kick off its tires saying it needed to, “..air out the old dogs cuz they are sore.” and watch reruns on TV complaining about how, “Television Progrums ain’t as good as they used ta be.” It also developed a pot belly. 😂
I have an old Hilux truck 2.4 diesel. I've ran that on used motor oil straight no diesel left used gear oil straight minerel turps straight 2 stroke oil straight and used cooking oil and there wasn't any difference in performance or fuel economy just smoke from them all other than turps it ran better and more efficient on turps
@@TheMaggot1212 oh yea that's ok I was gonna say don't use it in EFI system just unless u mix it with diesel to thin it down. Machanical injection is ok that's why I run my old 2.4 on it. Lol
Power steering is next, right? Vegetable oil contains glycerin which you don't want in your fuel. It will stop you dead if the temperature drops enough. Vegetable oil will also bake on to the tips of your injectors whenever you shut off the engine. The road tax issue could also be a problem, unless that truck is for farm use only. Judging by the houses in the background, I'd guess you are not farmers. Stacy David has a cable TV show where he separated the glycerin out of the vegetable oil and the test truck ran well. You will also sacrifice power as vegetable has less heat value per unit volume. Good luck, gentlemen.
We gave the spent cooking oil from a tortilla factory to a landscaper, and he used it in his mowers, truck, and generators for power washing. He would purify it and add alcohol before putting it in the engine, but he said it worked fine.
When he says that they just put 240 calories of oil into the gas tank, if you look at the bottle, there are 256 servings per bottle. So, if you do the math, 256x120x2, you get 61,440 calories!!
@@oldcroneysgarage9739 depends on what motor it has most older diesels can run on waste veggie oil and waste motor oil. A duce with a multi fuel motor can run on gas, diesel, waste oil, crude oil, kerosene, pretty much anything combustible.
