Yeah. I think people who only have a cursory understanding of climate change and the sabotage of climate action don't realise how spot on it is. But I could map most of the events in the movie to the much longer timeline of our actual history. The cancelled launch may as well have been a replay of when Exxon Mobil was responsible for literally derailing our first and best chance at climate action by colluding with the US Vice President in the late 1980s. I both love and hated the way the movie made me feel, but it needed to be made.

@@gadget2622 I'm sure there are parallels in Covid too. The US choosing to develop our own testing kits and failing while the WHO already had working kits is like BASH trying to execute their plan for the asteroid and failing miserably. Then there are the calls to license the Covid vaccines globally. But as we suspect Pharma won't so that get paid.

I really enjoyed the movie and it's attack on politically polarized sensationalist media. The reality is that science seems to be distanced or heavily dumbed down in the media. This movie wasn't meant to convince climate change deniers, but to make fun of the media for misrepresenting the scientific method.

So I watched this movie in a cinema because it had a cinematic release where I am (Australia), and I don't know if that helps but I found this movie to be INCREDIBLY immersive and VERY moving; I left this movie having an existential crisis for the rest of the evening. Maybe you would have a different experience if you're watching this movie on a laptop or a subpar home theatre experience, that might explain not feeling the same way about the movie because you aren't experiencing it in the ideal viewing environment. I think everyone on this show either needs to watch the movies they review in the same way to maintain consistency across experience, or they need to tell us how they watched the movie at the beginning of the episode (in the cinema, on a laptop in bed, etc.) to set expectations.

I especially liked the "last supper" scene as a whole scene, without cutouts, but the scene itself. The "talk" before the hit is perfect. The moment everything starts to shake, they start speaking weird nonsense just to fill the trill, kinda, to not the silence before the end arise.

The power of the film, for me, was that the analogy between climate change (or any other modern concern) was played against a deliberately immediate event that was undeniable to show the extreme absurdity of our reaction to any problem. The way we behave in politics, social media, the media, celebrity, it had to be something that would seem to be ridiculous to ignore because the question it asks is what the hell would it take for us to actually come together? It wasn't subtle, and it left me feeling I don't know how to feel (because there was so much to feel) after the film. After sometime I came to the conclusion what it left me with was a renewed lack of tolerance of the fake positive morning tv show or those taking a position for personal gain. Maybe it was trying to say listen to the scientists but you know, predictions in science are extrapolations and there can be disagreement so we can't just listen to the science, we have to discuss the science. I loved how Leonardo's character got sucked into the media frenzy and became an empty mouth piece and sold himself out. I mean, that's relatable isn't it? I liked his personal redemption of screwing up but then realising it. His wife didn't have to forgive him, she just had to decide it didn't matter anymore. If she had held onto it, in the end she'd have just hurt her kids in their final moments. Riley made an interesting anecdote of 'yeah lets just not talk about that' with his friends because that's the exact theme of the film for me, ignoring uncomfortable things. If it's ignored, rather than discussed rationally it doesn't help anybody and in the end everyone ends up getting frustrated and wanting to explode. When they first introduced Yule, I thought why do we get a new character at this point? It's gone on for a long time already. In the end though I loved him, as he was part of the majority of people out there who is just trying to live their lives and hadn't been in any of the polar extremes. He brought humanity to the film back to me and it left me really touched (well had me in tears) with the ending dinner scene. The weird cutaways didn't work for me. Some of the filming choices didn't work for me, but I thought the actors put in great performances. It's definitely the most divisive reaction I've seen for a film from the last year. Personally I didn't take it as a left vs right. The Daily Rip felt like a generic mass media play on peoples emotions but don't really try to say anything show, it wasn't right wing (they had a right wing snapshot). The president definitely had some Trumpisms because of recent politics, but I could have seen it equally as any politician who is more interested in being in their position than doing anything for the people they are supposed to represent. Do I think it's a film that would sway people about climate change? No, and I liked that. I don't like films that overtly tell you what to think. What I saw from it was a challenge against some of the ridiculousness of what's going on that we just accept as the way things are, and that's something I see which is a worthwhile message. Just think. I know that's not most peoples reaction, but I knew nothing about the film (or what the cast had said) prior to going in. I did not enjoy the film, it was uncomfortable, it didn't feel like a film to enjoy. But... it was cathartic in the if I don't laugh I'll cry or scream kind of way. I am really glad you covered it and managed to discuss it so evenly with different opinions amongst the crew.

Great response covered most of what I wanted to share. And I feel like people miss a part of the core message, which funnily enough Leo screams down the barrel of the camera on the The Daily Rip. And that's that we need to stop worrying about the optics and just be genuine and communicate with each other without worrying about ulterior motives.

Its a movie, its not a government outreach & people are idiots especially the audience. Is entertainment supposed to skirt around the political machinations of people(the audience) who would sacrifice others for their own gains or worse ignorance? Its one thing to talk about how on the nose/missed the point or how it has poor editing but it seems hackish to think a movie can't highlight the idiocy of society even if its not going to somehow instill some sense of self reflection. I think the point of this movie was to reflect the anxiety/emotion a portion of its audience feels or even would feel and perhaps it achieves that at the expense of another portion but I don't think it devalues the end result.

I believe this is one of the best satire comedies in recent years. As much as funny this movie is, it is also depressing to know this is how our current state deals with any world disaster. Be it a hurricane, climate warning, or our ongoing pandemic. Media and politics only acts to disasters when they have a benefit in it and that is the actual takeaway message from this movie.

I think the interviews spoiled the movie for Brandon. I agree with him that compared to The Big Short, Don't Look Ups isn't as good for all the reasons he gave. But I didn't know it was by the same director so I watched it with almost no expectations. As an eye-opening critique of modern society which hopes the change the minds of Climate Crisis deniers, it falls really short. However, it's a pretty good bit of cathartic satire and overall, I liked it. The names definitely have that made-up feel. Probably to avoid any lawsuits.

Just watched this so it’s still fresh. Commenting on the beginning of this review I thought, “this movie is pushing some kind of agenda, but I don’t really care. It is a unique look at our world we live in.” I also knew that this movie was in the works WELL before COVID, Jan. 6’s Insurrection, and all the other crazy shit that happened in the last two years (I actually graduated from Michigan State University a year ago but saw news articles about the actors wearing MSU apparel back in 2019). The same parallels I saw in a movie from the past like Contagion at the beginnings the pandemic are all present again now in this one but this hits harder because of the retrospective I apply to it.

He tries to backpedal later, but it rings hollow. In addition, a enormous number of innocent people died at the end of the movie. But to people like David, that doesn't register. This kind of nihilistic self-righteousness, when applied in the real world, can become truly tragic.

Maybe the oddest thing to me about the film is that it manages to take place in six months. It explains why the world governments can't prepare multiple launches in time, but it's so jarring to go through that cycle in 6 months having lived through the last 2-6. And yet Bash had time to have a second secret launch with cryopods that would be powered for tens of thousands of years. They could have leaned into the sci fi better by explaining how the comet will approach and be visible and cause impact and have denialism about how much damage would actually be done. The third act where Ogelthorpe and Mindy are reduced to public awareness and organizing shows how powerless the individuals are against climate change and shows that the movie can't suggest any actions to take because it's all in the hands of the powerful.

That's fair enough, there are some things in films that no matter how good the film it just will rub me the wrong way no matter what else is in it. It's just like chalk on a blackboard.

@@alangarde2928 Yep that was this movie (nails on chalkboard) for me which was weird because I work in climate science. For me it was just a very obvious hits of things I already know. It feels very much like a college student hammering over the head with snark which I find extremely annoying. Like someone constantly doing the wink and nudge going man isn't the media/general public so annoying?! The movie just felt too self congratulatory, at least we're not like THEM.

I went into the movie hopeful to be entertained and for it to be good, and ended up just like Brandon about it. It was a horrible movie and painful to watch it was so bad.

The vibe I got was that your assumption was exactly the thing that cheesed Brandon off. It's the kind of movie, that when people say they didn't like it, we assumed it was because they were politically "on the other side". That's not necessarily true
@mackmcd
@mackmcd 2 года назад
@@DizzyBusy Of course it's not. And not liking it, absolutely valid. It's not a super strong film. Certainly nothing close to The Big Short, (one of my favorite movies ever, same as Brandon.) But to not like ANYTHING about the film? Just feels like the whole thing was colored somehow. How exactly? I'm not sure. Hence, "I don't want to make too many assumptions". Shit, even Riley was like "were you tired? Had you eaten?" I didn't pull this out of a vacuum. Not saying I'm right. I'm saying that's how he sounded to me.

Climate educators for the most part ignore climate-change-science-resistant individuals, because decades of attempts at talking to them have found it to be a waste of time. There’s data on it. Yale does a “Six Americas” study on this topic, and have found people who resist valid climate science usually have incentives for doing so. Educators tend to focus on different groups. But to Brandon’s point about not mocking deniers… this movie is satire, and literally everyone looks ridiculous at some point (except J-Law I guess). This was never meant to change climate denier minds, not every climate movie has to be Schindler’s List But For Planet Earth, sometimes you gotta make some silly art about how ridiculous people are.

This movie is so much more than an allegory about climate change. In fact, making out to be an allegory completely blurs the real focus of the film: the utter and complete inability for those that guide narrative and control resources and direct politics to confront and meaningfully solve big problems, and the loss of sense-making and problem-solving to transient simulacra of reality that has no substance.

I didn't like how the movie pins the blame for the bulk of climate change on the average joe instead of the much greater contributor which is large corporations' pollution. Of course it's on us to pressure lawmakers to pass legislation to regulate this, but there's only so much you can do when all the politicians are paid off by those corporations. Like, China's coal production is fucking the atmosphere infinitely harder than some dude who just wants to drive a truck instead of a hybrid. In that regard I think the analogy works much better for Coronavirus, since we definitely could've handled that better.

I feel as though this is a response to the big short making no change. What's the point in making a movie so well when it has no effect. This movie was a cathartic scream into the void where The Big Short was an attempt to give a good lesson.

The thing I like about the Brantorac scene at the end is that if you think about it, even the over-the-top AI with the main goal of please-buy-all-our-stuff has predicted with surgical precision the inevitable through the course and action of all humans (since the CEO tells one point they know every aspect of every human through the gathered data).

I feel while the basic idea is pretty cool and the obvious parallels to the reality are really cool, the whole comedy aspect just like got lost, the jokes where just bad and didn't make me laugh, so it just was a chore to watch. So I don't hate the context, but it's just bad execution.

i think the movie really amplified current issues in our society, i dont think this would ever be a real senario but instead amplifies smaller issues such as sensationalised media which i think still could damage our society but maybe not quite literally as the meteor.
