I am the MD of a small Australian, high tech, made in Australia, manufacturing and innovation electronics company, never had a government grant in the 36 years since starting business. We are a viable company employing Australians and paying our taxes. We now have two competitors with neither one having uniqueness or innovation surpassing the products we develop and manufacture. Both companies existence was created from government grants. One of these tax payer created competitors has never made a profit, relying on staying viable from the grants it received. The other is maximising profits by offshore manufacturing in China. The ineptitude of decision makers, or call it what you will of numerous situations like this is of concern.

I worked with a person leading a Division in Govt who asked me to engage their preferred service provider - problem was this provider was a friend AND they were NOT on the Dept's panel of approved providers for the service-type. I raised my concerns and ultimately this person couldn't proceed with hiring their mate. I was given the cold shoulder and then out of nowhere got a job offer elsewhere - funny that! Unfortunately, this person went on to be promoted. I've seen it many times - people with integrity are allowed to only get so far - they are a species not invited into "the club".

To truly stamp out corruption there needs to be true consequences. Offenders just have to be jailed and that news needs to be broadcast for all to see. Knowing that you will be jailed and humiliated with little chance of reasonable employment when you are released will make a lot of people stop and think. In extreme cases forfeiture of property and assets must also occur. Why allow the corrupt to return to their ill gotten lifestyle when released. If you want to be serious, you need to be shown as being serious.

The corruption starts at taxes on private property. Cane farmers are being taxed out of being able to hold onto their properties. There are currently many public servants in Australia, especially in senior positions, that have got their position through affirmative action (skin colour, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation) rather than qualifications or merit.

Wish my uncle was still alive he could tell you a story about Wayne Swan. Back in the early 90s I uncle could a job delivering pamphlets in the seat of Lilly for Swan. Swan paid him, as agreed at $19 a thousand, but when he went to collect his money from Swan, Swan got my uncle to sign a receipt that he was paid $33 per thousand.
