Samurai aren't allowed to let themselves be captured. The code is death before defeat, meaning they need to either die in battle, or end their own lives to prevent the great dishonour of being defeated, and/or again, captured.

christianity's attitude against suicide is going to be interesting.
@MTFat
@MTFat 4 месяца назад
In the Pacific War, Japanese soldiers chose to commit suicide with grenades under the name of the Emperor rather than be captured by the US forces. However, unlike samurais who voluntarily committed seppuku for honor, Japanese soldiers were forced to choose suicide by order of their superiors.

@@MTFat By the way, when the commander himself commits suicide, he commits seppuku. Even though soldiers fighting on the front lines are scattered by grenades, it remains truly foolish that only commanders who are busy drinking tea indoors can choose a noble death.🎉

Taiko - a person who has handed over the position of “Kanpaku” to his or her children. Formerly the honorary title of regent or minister of state. Kanpaku - The position of the Imperial Court in charge of assisting the Emperor was called "sessho" for the minor Emperors and "kanpaku" for the adult Emperors. Shogun - an abbreviation of the Seii-Daishogun. The Seii-Daishogun was originally one of the imperial court's outposts in Japanese history, and was the general of an army organized to conquer the "Emishi" (Emishi or Ezo), a people from the Tohoku region who were not vassals to the Yamato Imperial Court and were in conflict with it. After the Kamakura period (1185-1333), when the samurai government was established in the Tōhoku region, the position became one in which a person who had taken power as the leader of a warrior clan was appointed. Since it was the descendants of the Minamoto clan that founded the first samurai government, the Kamakura shogunate, the tradition was carried on thereafter that the title of shogun could only be held by those of Minamoto lineage. Toyotomi Hideyoshi (who inspired "Taiko" in this show.), who was from a poor farmer background, decided to become the highest authority under the Emperor by obtaining the title of Kanpaku (Taiko), the head of the nobility, instead of Shogun, the head of the samurai. At that time, the nobles had no power, let alone financial power, and their only privilege was the authority to establish authority. For this reason, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was able to adopt a nobleman (Fujiwara clan) for a large sum of money and obtain the title of nobility, thus shinning in the position of Kanpaku (Taiko). Since Tokugawa Ieyasu (inspired Toranaga), is a Minamoto clan, he was qualified to get a title of Shogun by nature (birth).

I'm Japanese and Hatamoto means a title, almost like ranked as a lifeguard of his master. And it is a great honor that most of samurais would like to have such title during the Sengoku period.

I know you guys said this but heres my take. The guy got his child and himself killed because he couldn't keep himself check in a royal court where he has no authority whatsoever to speak. It's like going into a restricted area which has a sign saying you will be shot on sight but you walk in anyway. If toranaga hadn't stopped him there would have been all war killing everyone and everything they ever loved just because he couldn't control himself when everyone else was able to. Morden day equal to this is you being brought into a court for a legal prosecution and won't shut your mouth when it's not your turn to speak but when asked to, you draw out a sword. You will be easily jailed and charged a fine, there are protocols in courts be in 4000 years ago or present day you just don't do some things in a court or else there will be consequences (of course not as severe as 4000 years ago)

I'm surprised the priests turned the ship logs over to Toranaga - wasn't it implied that they contained evidence of things that they didn't want to be known (like maybe secret bases in Macau)?Maybe they somehow knew that Blackthorne had already told Toranaga about the secret bases? Or maybe they doctored the books, removing the pages that they didn't want Toranaga to see? [EDIT: re-watching, I guess the priests did know that Blackthorne had told Toranaga about their secret trading with China. So, maybe the ship's logs had no other secrets?]
@enicole1203
@enicole1203 4 месяца назад
I'm unsure about one thing. Blackthorne told Toranaga that he took the route he did to avoid the base in Macau. But it seemed like he only learned of that base from the priest in the prison so I think he deliberately used that info to cast doubt on the Portuguese but he actually lied. Therefore his ship logs wouldn't really have any of that information. As far as I can recall they had no real knowledge of Japan before they got there except that it existed and the Portuguese were getting rich there. Maybe they knew something about Cathay but not the extent of the Portuguese role between those countries.

Francis Xavier, a Catholic priest who visited Japan in the 16th century, said 'Of all the non-Christian peoples I have ever known, none can surpass the Japanese. They are a gentle people, very polite in their speech and without malice. They are a polite people to each other and, above all, a great people of honour." 'Only they have little interest in foreigners and foreign countries, and do not have the same politeness as themselves.'

For anyone wondering how Mariko knows how to beat ass with a Naginata, the wives of Samurai were very often well trained in self defense. When their husbands were away at war, Onna-Bushi were expected to defend their homes and villages and were often the last line of defense during sieges. Mariko's husband was known as a renowned warrior and no doubt would have trained her at least to defend herself.

I'm pretty sure the reason Father Martin calls Mariko "Lady Maria" is because she would be baptised and Maria would be her Christian name. I would assume he is using Lady as a replacement for -sama, so that her honorific is also "Christianised". This would be the kind of thing Catholic missionaries would get up to.

Even if Buntaro jumped in the sea to swim to the boats, the enemy would jump in to pursue him. He is also in armor which would slow him down in comparison to those not wearing it. Added to all of this is what other commentators stated about samurai honor.
@DaVic133
@DaVic133 4 месяца назад
Remembering from the book for one last time, I don't remember the rest of it. In the book when they are on the boat as they leave Buntaro, they laugh as they watch him fight and do what not just Toranaga knows Buntaro is capable of and the others know as well except for Blackthorne of course. I think it's Toranaga who turns and noticed that Blackthorne is angry. Blackthorne was upset that they'd leave a man behind and laugh at him as he fights for his life. Once again they laughed because they know what Buntaro is capable of.

Yeah, it does seem like the info is a trump card, but Torunaga has a matter of a couple days before they make a move against him. Using the information as a reason to deny the Portuguese ship to leave forces the Christian lords to act, hence the assassination attempt. Now he has an excuse to move the ladies out of the castle urgently (and smuggle himself out in the process). It also gave him an excuse to confront Yabushige, and that puts Yabushige back in his corner since he will feel pressed to reinforce his loyalty. It was all an effort to up the ante and leverage a way out and back to Yabushige's province, where Blackthorne's ship and weapons are.

The Japanese Culture will always be criticized, esp by the countries who were invaded by them. Those who think their culture is pristine are mostly, people from the west. Those who never experienced the atrocities they've committed to whatever land they've invaded. History has recorded more cruel punishments they did to the poor people of my country and others in Asia. They're not considered as punishment to be honest by just pure atrocities as they commit them without reason but just because they can and they want to. But one can't deny why people are fascinated by how the Japanese put honor above all. Nobody said their culture is to be praised but it makes you wonder how honor can be considered as the highest importance, that they most of the time get blinded on what is right from wrong (at least what's morally correct in the the modern eyes). These cruelties are not only from the Japanese Culture btw, they are from ALL of the countries who sought to expand their territories in those times. We can never change anything from the past, we can only learn from them.
