Thanks so much for watching! Check out the Blog Post for this episode for a look into our Route: www.asthemagpieflies.com/blog/2023/6/30/were-headed-to-utah
Gary and the sleeping bag I was laughing out loud .. then Gary was doing the Amanda Dance around the tent... Cleaning his helmet was innovative for sure OMG So enjoyed this episode. Thank heavens Amanda you were present to keep this man-child in check LOL...
You're not the only one who stops at cemeteries when on the road. They're quiet and usually empty, with nice places to let the dog run around. Yes, I've seen a cattle drive on the road. I don't know if it had a license.
Gary doing the tent fly dance ceremony was .. unique. Didn't think that could be topped until I witnessed the sleeping mummy?, shroud? bag? Hope you got the HCU fully tested. Think Patent!
An answer to Gary's question: YES, I have experienced a cattle drive in Southeastern AZ where I worked on a 14 section ranch (for the greenhorns, that's 640 acres per section) a number of times. And the most challenging Roundup was over along the Eastern Arizona / New Mexico border with a bunch of Mavericks on a ranch that was absolutely huge in the mountains only traversed by mules Saddleback. Rugged as hell, and livestock not wanting to see any signs of civilization!
Welcome to my home state! Plenty of beauty and fun riding, I'm sure you enjoyed it. And yes, I rode through a cattle drive on a sketchy stretch of the Utah BDR a couple of years ago. 😆🐄🏍️
Thank you Amanda & Gary, great seeing ya's having fun together again. I have a few times come across mobs of sheep being moved along the road, Luckly they only drop littel poops, would'nt want to be riding through a few cow patties
Fun series. Never seen an actual cattle drive, but down the street from me there was a Sheep herd blocking traffic as the funneled into a new section of ground. Yes this was in AZ. Love your videos but especially like the ones with Gary.
I have witnessed a cattle drive, or a semblance of one. My wife and I were travelling from South Dakota to Montana and just inside Montana (don't remember where exactly), we were held up for about a half hour as the cows were ushered across the road. Love these types of videos, and as an Africa Twin rider, I love your bike!
I can't say I've ever been blocked by a cattle drive, but apparently I'm avoiding cool places like the ones you've been to! I love riding with my wife but if my brother still rode I'd be all kinds of excited about moto road trips with him. He and I went camping last year, him in his truck and me on the bike, and it was great. Looking forward to the next in the series!
Glad to see Gary getting in on the rain fly dance 😂 your hat setup is genius! Last month when you shared a photo of it on instagram, I borrowed the idea on my last tour , doing a similar setup with a bungee net, rather than crushing it as I’d originally planned to, thanks for the inspiration 😁 here in Ireland cattle drives are a fairly regular occurrence!
Another one knocked out of the park. I am happy to see all of these videos making leaps forward each and every time in narrative and cinematography. Keep it up.
Hey Amanda, just did a 21 day trip and Utah was a great piece. Did the Burr trail/switchbacks and the sand kicked our butts at the bottom of it! Look forward to the next episode.
Great work capturing the unpredictable elements of even well-planned travel! Your ability to capture the beauty of any surroundings is perfect! Furthermore your illustrations in Tim Collin’s book about motorcycle camping are fantastic! Never Stop!!!
Great to see you guys back on the road. I am praying for sunshine. Have you had to deal with the Canadian wild fire smoke? Be safe and watch out for those deer!
You two warm my heart. It is so refreshing to see people just being people in real world realities. I am really tired of the usual sugar coated videos others put out. Thank you! Yup……Gary rain fly dance…epic.
Never seen a full on cattle drive. But I have exchanged waves with cowboys I rode past on forest service roads. And had my camp completely surrounded by a herd of cows. 😂
Yes, I was caught in a cattle drive. I was riding in the northern part of the Black Hills when a cattle drive came down the road toward me and my motorcycle. I stood still and let the cows go around, as did other bikers, but one headed towards me and got called back by one of the cowboys. Then, all of the bikers had to swerve around the slippery cow patties that were pointlessly fertilizing the asphalt. 😊
Haven't been stopped by a cattle drive but did get detoured due to a trailer wreck of frozen turkeys. They were having trouble clearing the road because the turkeys were slidding too much for the dozer to scoop up.
Cattle drive! Yes, southern Oregon. Was IN a 4 wheel deal and glad of that, because every cow close enough, took a tongue sample of the old Toyota HiLux, wind shield, mirrors, hood.....glad I was not riding.... :)
glad to see a notification from you. always fun when you bring a Vstrom on the adventure. i'll go anywhere to not stay in a KOA. Anywhere...... glad it worked out for you.
We rode THROUGH a cattledrive near Paisley (with consent of the cowboys). Very disoriented when in the middle, nothing but eyeballs and a brown 'ocean' that interfered with equilibrium. Very memorable!
Yes. One time with a group of friends on a trip SOMEWHERE in Oregon. I don't know where but they were going UP the road not ACROSS the road. A little scary riding beside heavy leather
Love seeing Logan Canyon and Garden City. Which body of water is at 12:38? Echo Canyon? And, end screen question, I got hung up by a cattle drive when I was riding with a friend through the mountains by Blackfoot Reservoir near Soda Springs Idaho.
Can't wait for the next episode of "Magpie and the Tootsie Roll Ride Again" although that's seriously warm and comfy looking! My mother's place in Ellis, ID has the cows disrupting traffic roughly weekly from early spring to late fall. Of course, Ellis is a T in the road with a post office and nothing else....
A+ so happy Honda sharing the AT DCT for 2023… I just bought my AfricaTwin since watching you! Hope they give it to ya! Ride fun safe. Thx for the share
favourite part of the video is the field tested HCU. No need for any further post trip hat separation therapy sessions EDIT I may have commented too soon - your brother waddling around in the sleeping bag reminded me of the caterpillar with the German accent in Bugs Life - SHNELL, SHNELL
Yes! Yes I have witnessed a cattle drive in the middle of the road. Quite impressive I thought. I loved it. I even quickly got over my annoyance for my path of travel being blocked. I might be a weirdo but I thought it was awesome.
Love you two together. Truly sweet. Great to see you back on adventures. A cattle drive in Wales, UK. Cows walking across the road to another field.... termed as cow s@@t corner? Yes... cowboys...no. 😂Ride safe, LJ
Greetings, I sure enjoy your channel and seeing all the neat places you go. The one big question that keeps coming back to me time and time again is how do you deal with the heat? I've never owned official riding gear other than Gloves and my Helmet. I'm 63 now and been riding since I was 11, but once it hits 90 out I'm done. Yet I see you and others in some arid areas riding away. Here in Missouri riding at night just isn't safe and you miss scenery. I've been on a Goldwing the last 28 years, heat it has, but still no A/C! Lol
@HondaMotorcycles *needs to* get you on (give, not loan!) the TransAlp before anyone else, and give your brother the Africa Twin, for all the publicity and exposure you give them. You inspire our latent wanderlust. Your videos are so soothing and entertaining. The rain fly dance is almost a sacred tradition now. Be safe out there.
Got held up for ranchers moving cattle in s.dak ,,not on my bike tho so not too bad. Nice video still think gary has that perfect announcers voice……many more adventures…..
I do so love your trips! I am sitting camping on the Isle of Skye in Scotland wishing I had done it on a bike rather than by car! Keep up the great work - you inspire so many people to realise their dreams - thank you! Safe riding 🏍️
I have seen and helped with cattle being moved between pastures by crossing or going down roads. But I have never seen what I would think of as a cattle drive. The distances of the moves I have witnessed were always less than a miles. And those doing the herding weren't on horseback. But it is still a neat site just to see the variation of how we all live our lifes. What work we do. Commercial or commercial feeling campgrounds sometimes make nice multi day basecamps for exploring an area. It feels like it is less likely to have someone steal your stuff from the campsite when away from the campsite. Of course the fees that many of campgrounds charge feels like robbery.
I actually have been sidelined by a cattle drive; although, I was in my truck and not on my motorcycle. Peach Tree Road off Hwy 198 east of King City, California. There must of been 150 head of cattle and four riders herding them along. It took about 45 minutes for all of them to pass, but it was cool to watch. 👍🏻
I love when you travel with your brother. You gell so well. I'm in a KOA Kabin tonight 104° is too much for me. Great showers. San Angelo TX. I'm filling for divorce from my GoPro Hero 7. It shut down & lost footage twice today. How's your Osmo been in the heat? Has it shut down or lost footage. Mine will be mounted on the bars. What model do you have?
Oh man, sorry for your campsite woes. You totally got given the finger on that. $60 for a tent site? Man. I loved that your bro took over the super hero rain fly cape dance. He handled the fish out of water aspect with unique style and grace. Two thumbs up. End Screen.... I have been stopped by a cattle drive in the middle of the road. Not far from Joseph, OR. It wasn't for long. Only around 60 head.
Thank you Amanda and Gary, great to see the tent cover dance by Gary, I think it could catch on! No, I have not witnessed a cattle drive, or by the road.
Utah is awesome and I did see a cattle drive across a road , funny enough it was outside of SLC, when I was visiting a friend and we were trail riding about an hour out of Salt Lake City
Cool trip. It’s pretty neat to do a trip like this with your brother. Pretty cool!! And yes, I’ve not only seen a cattle drive…I’ve been on three cattle drives on the Yakima Res. About 3-4 hundred head each time.
