You know, Lego is notoriously chill with their licenses, there are at least two bionicle fan games in production right now, so if you asked nicely I bet they would allow you to release this game
Especially right now they're trying to branch out and put a lot of variety out there. If someone is willing to do all the work for them, they must know people have wanted a LEGO Island remake/remaster for a long time.
There are some videos about them talking about it. They stopped focusing on licenses and patents, and started focusing on trademark. So if he didn't call this game LEGO island he would probably be fine releasing it. But he screwed it now..
Haha, if I remember correctly the game ran on 10fps by default. It was also CPU dependend, if you played it on a pentium 3 or higher, you would have insane fps but the physics would go ham too and made it unplayable.
Love the idea! But I have a somewhat devious suggestion. Hear me out... there are lots of tutorials here on RU-vid on how to use Geometry Nodes in Blender to turn models... into Lego. Think about it, the entirety of Lego Island's landscape. Made out of Lego.
There is a blender tutorial out there that tells you how to make anything into lego blocks so that would be dope, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LrEHoaq6QFE.htmlsi=EUXj49PopDGiVwaf
My old college teacher was one of the devs for Lego Island. It was so cool to just be near someone who was part of something so iconic and a big piece of my early life! Hopefully he and the other devs see this
I may be late to this party but something worth noting is that the iconic original soundtrack master tapes were quite literally drowned in the sea. The OSTs composer Lorin Nelson successfully restored most of the iconic tracks which are free for download on the project island website. I'm not as privy on game dev knowledge or even usage rights but imagine how cool it could be traversing the island as the original soundtrack plays, tracks transitioning from one location on the island to the next
For graphics, you should either mimic the 3d rendered versions of the island as seen on the box & in the intro/outro, or you should go the full photorealistic route but make the landscape elements feel large to mimic the feel of being a lego man in your parents' backyard.
I always wanted a Lego Racers/Island mashup - Brickster made it into Lego Soccer, but I was always sad that the Brickster bots didn't make their way over to Rocket Racer's realm, that would have been epic.
@@NielsGx Then don't use the unreal assets but just convert it to the wdb file. We already know how the wdb file works. Maybe change the code a bit to support the high-res textures. That's all.
@@Gamer-ct6hb the issue isn't the support of the model formats, but the actual rendering of the models. The new models have many many more triangles than the old games' models had.
Absolutely fabulous work. I sure hope it can be released publicly someday. Lego Island was my very first PC game (not including games like Solitaire) and I've been a diehard fan all of my life. Seeing the Island in Unreal Engine 5 is a stunning treat, and that reveal at 4:40 literally made my jaw drop. Great work!
RU-vid recommendations on point! I played this game as a kid and was blown away! Still have the song “you can move a mountain brick by brick” in my head!
I was born in 1998 and grew up on this game. I never thought I would see a video about it in 2023. Those old clips really brought back some nostalgic memories for me. This is really awesome what you're doing.
@@7EEVEE It might be a waste of time like you, but other can just take as the entertainment it is. Is every fiction book/movie/show a waste of time cuz you'll never go there or do that? Are woodworking/maker videos a waste of time cuz you'll never get to use what they made? Is anime a waste of time since you'll never go or interact with it at all? etc.. Yeah its all a 'waste' of time but thats the point, to pass the time without accomplishing anything. Should everyone go unalive themselves since life is just a waste of time cuz they'll eventually die anyway?
@@7EEVEEthat’s what I’m saying. It’s a scummy gate keeping thing to do. Like make it open if it’s not finished and let us finish it. Like literally no reason for him to not release it
Not only was this recreation impressive, the writing of the episode & the fun additions made this very enjoyable to watch. Can’t wait for the next episode!
lol, of course right after i watched the last mattkc video on his lego island efforts here's another lego island video! and here i am, fascinated about a game I don't even think I heard of until this year.
This game screams nostalgia, even if you haven't played it, you will feel nostalgic. I hope you're able to recreate the opening cutscene and the bad ending!
I wasn't born during the time of Lego Island 1 but this video made me look it up and saw Lego Island 2 which I did play around the time it came out. I loved that game and played so much of it because I didn't have internet at home and it was the only game I had at the time, brings up so many good memories.
🎶 Brick by Brick, tock by tick No matter how thin, no matter how thick Papa told Mama, and Laura told Nick You can move a mountain if you do it Brick by Brick 🎶 My childhood just came flashing back watching this, wholesome 🙏🏼
this is the kind of remake project that needs expansion. you are starting with an island, so you can add more islands :P more islands, more legos, more sets, have fun with the growing chaos :P
This is SUPER cool! And I like alot that you are using character models and having them interact. Remaking the island is cool, but part of it is the people, the interactions, the world itself so that it's alive. Thank you for having some fun animations to it!
Truly amazing work done! As cool as it is to recreate the island it would be pretty cool to make to Island more “LEGO like”. As if you were walking through the LEGO movie!
Things to think about: - Clouds that are shaped like LEGO's to keep the theme (just like Minecraft's square clouds) - Raining small semitransparent blue studs, imagine the satisfying sound they would make - Add dirt and scratches to the LEGO pieces to make them look used, just like the game LEGO Builder's Journey - Kids games used the arrow keys, instead of WASD - Have someone to remaster/redo the music. The original files are terrible, but the music is quite good
@@draconic5129 No, they're doing it for the purpose of not getting sued by a multi-billion dollar corporation because of a little thing called licensing and trademarks...
@@LuxTheWizard I don't fully buy that reason, sure it seems like the most obvious reason but there are ways around it, both honest/lеgal and underhanded/grеy arеa.
I've been waiting so long for this when you teased it. I never had Lego Island, but I still have been interested in your work, even if we can never play it.
I have a very vivid memory from when I was a kid of being able to go off of the road in Lego Island. Walk on the grass, rocks, etc. My family got a new computer and when I reinstalled Lego Island (still as a kid but a couple years later) I could no longer get off the road and was confused. Does anyone else remember having a corrupted game that let you walk anywhere? Or was my child brain just corrupted from a fever dream or something? PS. THIS LOOKS AWESOME! Great work!
There is a Island Project that will be released remake of Lego Island. And team even at Lego official podcast on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of lego games.
I played Lego Island occasionally at a friend's house and it looked super cool. Even though I haven't been too involved with this game I'm for some reason extremely stoked for a remaster after I've seen MattKC's videos and now this!
Subbed. This is amazing. I can't wait to see how you guys approach the underground race. That thing is a total fever dream hellscape, and has so much potential for this project.
What would be really cool for the landscape is instead of creating ultra-realistic details, you could recreate the Lego baseplates that existed at the time. If you wanted some texture for the cliffs, I'd play around with adding some LURPs and BURPs (Little/Big Ugly Rock Pieces).
Lego Island was a game that set my young legomaniac heart aflutter, and I tried to install it on every computer I had access to. Tragically, none of them could ever run it. I've still never played it. Perhaps it's better this way, living on in my heart as the perfect game.
Seeing the lighting systems makes me wonder how they could be used in a totally different setting. What if LEGO pieces themselves are the only light sources in a setting? LEGO Rock Raiders takes place in deep dark caves and anything not near the cursor is shrouded in darkness unless it is lava, a crystal or an artificial light source. I look forward to seeing what you can do with the race track on Lego Island, which is also underground. Or maybe just nighttime scenes where only the street lights and cars are bright light sources.
I remember getting this in 1997 (as a 9 year old), it was the coolest thing. I played it for months. I am so happy and thankful you guys are embarking on something truly historic. Looking forward to your next update!
I was looking for a recent video because I remembered you were the master of remakes. Here is my dream: A VR remake of the arcade classic Berzerk. I want to be there in person, sneaking around the energy walls and shooting the red robots with the roving eyes, and finally running from the horrifying 3d smiley face Evil Otto.
This looks so amazing! LEGO Island was one of the first PC games I really really really wished for...Seeing this in a modern engine, recreated with so much love and passion...Wow. Just Wow!
If you know about the currently in development fangame "Project Island", which WILL be made available, you might even find that it's been acknowledged by the LEGO group, who gave their "blessing" for the fangame to exist. (which isnt the same as approving it, endorsing it, etc. but, you know) so you probably don't have to worry about that.
