In this episode, Michelle and Alex react to one of the first videos they watched after moving to the Netherlands, a Dutch food tour from popular travel vloggers Kara and Nate. Oh, and we also try two kinds of drogeworsten from HEMA: one from Groningen and one from Friesland.

I think the most Dutch broodje is het broodje gezond (cheese, ham, sliced boiled egg, lettuce, tomato, cucumber on a sliced pistoletje with mayonnaise)

They wrote Broodje under Frikandel, so i think it should have been a Frikandelbroodje, the one with puff pastry! And the other way around it would have been a real Broodje Frikandel (met frietsaus 🤤), also typical Dutch! ✌🏻

@@Cybersanny Bedankt! It was love at first sight when I went there 2 years ago for the first time. I’m also learning Dutch so I can carry a basic Dutch conversation and don’t feel like an outcast there (knowing that Dutch ppl will likely switch back to English at some point of the conversation 😅). But Americans like this lovely couple inspire me to keep learning the language:)

I think a hole in the wall is something else, like there’s actually an opening in the wall where someone sells (somewhat like Broodje Mario or… Mannekenpis), like a food truck but in a building I guess 😆

Carpaccio is very Dutch. Of course, there is a dish called carpaccio from Venice, but our carpaccio really is something different, both in terms of popularity and (usually) in terms of ingredients. Like kipsaté and hutspot, it's inspired by dishes from other countries, but has become a typically Dutch dish. And a *broodje* carpaccio? That's the Dutchest thing in the world.

Droge worst is not the only thing in Groningen with too much cloves. People seem to be used to it here, I didn't grow up here and I don't like it. Drentse and Tukkerse droge worst are also different and in the Achterhoek there is metworst which is a bit less dry/more fatty I guess.

@@buncharted2 I'm from Groningen (Grunn) and I new immediately when I heard Cloves it was Groninger worst. The Frisians put cloves in their "Friese nagelkaas".

Great video. Surely I can't be the only one who kept waiting for Sashimi to turn around and complain "why don't they give ME any lines?" but that's a nice shout out / love letter to Kara and Nate. They could use a bit of love right now. Actually we have loved any collaborations with other YTers. You play nice together! But it's fascinating that now that you've 'settled' quite a bit... learned the language... gotten your residence (fingers crossed) you still approach things with a great sense of discovery. Keep it going!

Rosbief actually isn't horse meat, it is beef. It originates from the English words 'roast beef'. I can see why you think that it is horse meat, as the dutch word Ros is a synonym for Paard (=horse). Corned beef is also not made from corn 😉

@@davidvdbergen Yes you're right, canned Stoofvlees is often made from horse meat. I agree with you that Rosbief would have been a very good 'broodje'. It's also much more traditional than carpaccio. Eet Smakelijk! 😊

Sadly you missed out on the best type of droge worst from the North: Drentse kosterworst. You can find the Huls ones in supermarkets, but make sure to get the Huls Gekookte Drentse kosterworst (2 smaller ones, slightly firmer) and not the softer bigger one in a thick plastic bag. Ideally you let it dry a bit more before consuming, the firmer the better :)

@@buncharted2 Ha, if only you'd have known, you could have done a whole episode on all the different variations of 'droge worst' there are :) It probably doesn't happen as often anymore, but in the past people commonly had a platter of droge worst, kaasblokjes and leverworst as a snack on Saturday nights. Or with some augurken wrapped in boterhamworst or quartered gekookte ei wrapped in rookvlees.

It is funny but different butcher families have their own recipes. And most of them stick to what they know. Thus you can actually taste the difference, even between an Uncle or an Aunt.

Never had Friese droogworst, i'm assuming thats the one that tastes like clove? We do have enough dried sausages and cold meats to fill an entire video with tbh. Could even do a "dutch tapas" with an assortment of cheese cubes, rolled up cold cuts (all the cervelaat variations...and our chorizo and salami), leverworst slices, pickles, silver onions and amsterdam onions, a packet of crackers, maybe even some pieces of that cheap garlic bread baguette for in the oven. Save the rest for a series binge night or a picknick when the weather finally stops being confused. :') And if you want to be a true droogworst enjoyer, all the good ones have little pieces of string or clips holding it together...hang those somewhere where they can get a few hours of direct sunlight per day. ;) (even after they have been cut, with a clean knife ofcourse)

Ever tried Drentse droge worst? This one is nice, not too fancy and down to Earth, like the people in Drenthe are. Btw, last weekend a part of my living room smelt of clove. I had to euthanise one of my silvertip tetras (he had been having issues and was showing clear signs of dropsy) and clove oil is a practical agent for it. It makes fish go to sleep and an overdose makes sure they don't wake up. I used an aroma therapy product I purchased at Holland & Barret's so the poor thing went out in a little wellness bath. Clove is not my favourite spice though. I like garlic and red pepper.

I do like the videos of Kara and Nate. Except when they show off their gained wealth by showing the craziest rooms, first class flights and decadent life style. I do love the videos of places I never seen or heard about. About American Vloggers trying Dutch food: There is really so much more to Dutch food than bitterballen and stroopwafels, herring and poffertjes 😜😜 Those are not food... They are snacks. So that's why I am happy YOU 2 also review many other parts of Dutch food culture ! BTW did you guys ever tried some typical Dutch jams? As in confiture? As in brood beleg? Some special ones are Reine Claude ( green plums) , Ananas jam (pineapple) and a really special one: Gember jam (ginger). Of course there are nowadays many more flavors and qualities. Dutch drop is not to chew but to suck on it. Really. Also some of the hard candies... Suck it! Do not bite it! Nates "oliebol" is really a Berliner bol.

Hot dogs are generally smoked and have a casing right? Big differences compared to the frikandel. Also, hot dogs are mostly made with pork, frikandellen with 'kipseperatorvlees'.

I don't understand what they're talking about at 10:50. And they show what seems to be a kroket. Yes, put spicy ketchup, mayo and onions on a hotdog and voila, a hotdog special. Ahotdog has a skin, a frikandel not. Hm, no erwtensoep on the list.

drop isn't made to chew.. most Dutch and european sweets aren't amde to chew.. Americans can't seem to grasp that concept. they try to chew the hardest sweets..there should be some common sense hitting in.. this is hard to chew.. it is meant to last while slowly melting in the mouth.. Fun fact, as kids me and my pals would bite our chewers, abck in the mouth in to a honey drop.. and on the count of three open our mouth as fast as possible.. I pulled out fillings doing that, hahaha!! Moral of the story, sweets aren't made to chew... Mentos and chewing gum are made for that..the rest isn't to chew...but to melt sloooooowly

Sorry Alex ik ben het niet met je eens een fricandel is geen hot dog want een fricandel wordt gemaakt van kippevlees met varkens vlees en een hot dog is gemaakt van varkens en rund vlees en een hot dog wordt gekookt en een fricandel gaat de frituur in en een hotdog heeft een varkens darm als omhulsel en een fricandel heeft niets en een goeie fricandel is licht gekruid terwijl de saus de hotdog zijn smaak geeft proef maar eens een grove fricandel en een kook worst dan ervaar je dat een hotdog meer lijkt op de Hema rookworst en de fricandel meer weg heeft van een bal gehakt weer een leuke vlog vooral het einde ga zo door .................
