One of the most beautifully written, composed, arranged, and recorded songs in history

Zeppelin never called themselves a rock and roll or hard rock band. Just a band with variety and great songs. And this is a masterpiece.

The thing about older music is it feels like you're going on a journey. Very little of today's music incites this type of feeling.

It is so good as a 65 year old man to see young people smiling to music that did the same to me, And still does !!

That outro is the most gorgeous piece of music Page ever wrote. It's so rich and harmonically complicated, and it's that sort of thing that differentiates Page from his imitators.

You can't limit Zeppelin to a genre. Zeppelin IS a genre themselves.

The strings sound is made by an instrument called a Mellotron. This is one of the finest examples of what a Mellotron can do.

This is definitely in their top 10 of studio produced tracks. There are several professional orchestras that have performed this as classical sheet music (along with a few other LZ songs)! It is slow and methodical, which will take some fans off guard the 1st time they listen to it. The medley of sounds from violins to cello to piano, all backed by the smooth acoustic pattern by Jimmy is astounding quite honestly! Even Bonzo gets in line by playing softly at times, using brushes! They were never afraid to take chances and do something new, and this track is proof of that! Enjoying your reactions, keep em comin!

You need to do the 1973 Live MSG version. IMHO, it ranks up there with Stairway & Kashmir IMHO

In 1972 we were lying around smokin some Blonde Lebanese hash, some Thai stick,drinkin beers and listening to this album. At that moment in time,all was right with our world. Too bad with YOUR love of Zeppelin you were not there with us. I am truly sorry for that.

Always gives me a buzz to watch you young ones grooving to the music I grew up with. I'm guessing you guys are about the same age as my kids. My daughter often raids my collection for this period's music. The 1970s was definitely a great time for me to grow up in. I'm so happy you've found the delights of Led Zeppelin.

Hey, it’s OK if Carol digs the more up-tempo hard hitting Zeppelin. What’s fantastic about Zeppelin is you will get everything from the most light and beautiful to the most heavy and hard hitting. There is something for everybody! But I bet you if Carol listens to this two or three times it’s usually the soft ones that take a little while to grow on you and this is a fantastic composition by Jimmy Page and some great string arranging by John Paul Jones. Not to mention the usual fantastic vocals and drumming of Robert Plant and John Bonham! Love ya!❤

Carol, listen again, and focus on the utter beauty of that acoustic guitar. It’s some of the most exquisite acoustic playing I’ve heard in popular music, along with some of David Gilmour’s acoustic playing. And the synth Strings by JPJ brings so much lushness to the arrangement. Bonham’s tasteful use of brushes on the drums is perfect. And yes, the lyrics by Plant are poetry. If you listen again, you will know not to expect “bombastic” and heavy music, so you can better enjoy it for the gift it does bring; sheer beauty.

Love this song and your reactions! Ten Years Gone (1990 Remaster) should DEFINITELY be on your list to listen to. The guitar work is incredible, and is my personal favourite by Led Zep 🔥

George Harrison once told John Bonham the problem with Led Zeppelin was they didn't write any ballads. When Jimmy Page heard this he said "He wants a ballad? I'll give him a ballad."

The chords to this song are like nothing else. (Apparently, Page wrote it because George Harrison said he would like to hear something softer by them). What a gift to us it is.

This is about the stages, or seasons of a love relationship, an absolutely beautiful song. Sometimes a beautiful slow song hits the spot, & Led Zeppelin definitely make some beautiful ones.

The first chord is the same as the opening chord of The Beatles' classic ballad, *"Something".* Jimmy did that as an homage to George Harrison, who wrote The Beatles' song, as it was George who inspired Jimmy to write this song. George was a big fan of Zeppelin, but said to them one day, *_"The only problem with you guys is that you don't do any ballads."_* So even though that wasn't true (I guess George never heard, "Thank You", or, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"), the challenge was on, and this gorgeous ballad about rain and seasons and love was Jimmy's response, with an opening shoutout to George for inspiring its creation.

No matter what people say you should do the studio version first. Get to know the song and see where they took it live. It's better than backtracking. Then you'll figure out which ones you like studio or live more.

The way the instrumentation in this song is constructed, it simulates a storm. The rain begins gently, starts a few drops here, then there, then more. A sudden crescendo claps, and a heavy downpour ensues until the storm smoothly moves away and the sun comes out at the end.

On the other hand, if you want to set your speakers on fire, look no further than "Communication Breakdown", off the first album, wherein Zep introduces adrenaline-fueled punk rock seven years before punk rock existed.

It's good that you're keeping reactions real. You do have to be in the mood for the Rain Song - I've a feeling you'll like it more on 2nd and 3rd listenings.

One reason many Zepplin tunes are so legendary was Page’s ability to write music that was or could be easily orchestrated, as shown in this great tune.

The Song Remains The Same & The Rains Song played together, live from Madison Square Gardens (1972), are so amazing. They are Plants fantasy story from their movie, The Song Remains The Same, was filmed at those 3 concerts. I highly recommend doing both together live, you’ll love it.

You want songs that rock a little harder? Then it's time to sample another signature Zep style; mystical soundscapes punctuated by rocket-launching riffs: "Over The Hills And Far Away", "What Is And What Should Never Be" and "Ramble On" (which many consider their best song). Led Zeppelin is much more acoustic than some people realize. That balanced with the Rock and/or Roll (Ned Flanders) songs is what made a LZ album a wonder to listen to.

The Rover.. (Houses of the Holy) Rock and Roll for sure. I've been to London, seen seven wonders I know to trip is just to fall I used to rock it, sometimes I'd roll it...

Yah, that's the thing about Zeppelin... first time hearing it you don't know what mood to prepare. Once you know it, you can go to it when YOU are tuned for that song. Another soft-tempo melodic poetic one like this is "Going to California" from the fourth album. Then sometimes they hit you with a folksy hoedown like "Gallows Pole" or "Bron y Aur Stomp" and you're wondering if you're about to find youself sitting at a 19th century backwoods campfire... or suddendly it's reggae style and they are playing "D'yermaker"(pronounced like Jamaica btw) or "Fool in the Rain"... then another hot blues-rocdk tune from the 1920's like "When the Levee Breaks" or "Black Dog"... and then it's back to big arena progressive for "Achilles Last Stand" and "Trampled Under Foot." Welcome back to the roller coaster that is Led Zeppelin! The only other group I know that hits with such a variety of styles and themes is probably Styx. I highly recommend getting to know Styx as well, but if you pick their songs randomly, you could get a whole lot of different stuff from them in the same way.

Carole, not every song is for everyone. When I was in my teens, this song bored me to death. The older I got, the more I grew to like and eventually love it. But don't worry, they have more than enough songs that rock! Try The Lemon Song or What is and What Should Never Be. Those will most definitely meet your expectations!

If memory serves me correctly, this song was written out of criticism from George Harrison from the Beatles, that Led Zeppelin couldn't write a "Love Song"... And this beautiful masterpiece was born. Zepp took a lot of crap from bands like The Who, who I actually think were just jealous of their explosion and adornment by the fans of Zepp. Let's not make any mistake, Zeppelin owned the late 60's and all of the 70's... They were a force when they took off.

Live msg is way better than the studio in my opinion. Listen to the live one!

For maximum impact, you should listen to this directly after "The Song Remains The Same", same way it was sequenced on the Houses of the Holy album.

I believe it will grow on you the more you listen if you let the music come to you - don’t listen with anticipation of a hard rocking or blues rock driven song because it is not. It is a beautiful song and despite my having listened to it since early 1970s I got goose bumps listening to it just now.

If you want a little upbeat heavy drumming watch Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks! They always have to be watched together.
