Today we dive into legendary English rock band The Beatles. "I Am the Walrus" is a song from their 1967 television film Magical Mystery Tour. It was released as the B-side to the single "Hello, Goodbye" in November 1967 & was also included on the Magical Mystery Tour EP.

MASTERPIECE!!! My personal N°1 song from The Beatles, incredible production, everything here is pure genius

"everything they do sounds super-similar" "they have that same sound on like every single song" This is a contender for the least true statement it is possible to make about The Beatles. Keep listening 🙃

The Beatles (well George Martin & Co.) had to physically splice tape together, they invented the "studio as an instrument", they pioneered all kinds of recording innovations and basically transformed the music industry and this guy says THAT?? When the fact is, they were by far, very far, the worlds most creative band of all time, there is no close 2nd. There is no band with such incredible diversity from song to song, perhaps not even the great composers. They played in literally every genre, and pioneered some of them.

We're all products of our own time - the period of our musical discoveries. I have some sympathy for this reaction. I'm a lot older and I can hear only one rap "song" being done and redone. Anyone who isn't familiar with the '60s can't easily appreciate what a radical break this was from the pop music that came before, even Beatles songs.

It makes me laugh when I hear Gen Z/Millennialls being dismissive about The Beatles. They are still one of the main influences in modern music. Ask any musician who he or she is inspired by and they will either name The Beatles or another musician who in turn was inspired by The Beatles. I just don't think young brains can comprehend how innovative and cool they were (still are). They are so far removed from it. I think when they get older and have more knowledge and understanding of cultural history they will get it more.

It's funny that you said "I just don't think young brains can comprehend how innovative and cool they were " when those of us who were fans (and STILL ARE) back in the '60s when The Beatles were active... we WERE YOUNG and had NO TROUBLE comprehending there music. There are also GenZ/Millennial reactors here that ARE LOVING the Beatles music on first hearing. NOT ONE of them as ever said that all the Beatles music "sounds the same" like TY said here! My JAW dropped when he said THAT!! It's SO NOT TRUE! AGAIN, back then, we couldn't wait for their next single or album to come out, to see WHAT they were going to do NEXT....was NEVER the same. TY clearly hasn't heard very much of their music (well there is over 200 songs), but if he would listen to ALL their music he would see that it ALL doesn't sound the same. Seriously. SO sad.

I think the imaginative, creative, visionary, boundary breaking music of the Beatles is too much for some people of a certain age to understand. They've grown up on so much music that either relies on excessive vulgarity or is just bland, conventional, formulaic songs with three notes.
@chargree

They dont see the Beatles in the context of the time frame and what music was like at the time. The Beatles invented and normalized many techniques and tricks that seem common now. They were not, at the time.

I cant be critical of Ty's comments. Im the same age as Dad but when I was Ty's age I didnt get the Beatles either. Its not till my listening ears matured more that I understood what they were trying to do. They were geniuses and deserved to be the biggest band the world has ever seen. I'm a synth pop/new wave nut and the Beatles do now appeal to my sensibilities.

@HaleksMTL Год назад
Actually no, the Mellotron was was used at the beginning of Strawberry Fields Forever but for I am The Walrus (And I did extensive research on this song) it was a 1964 Hohner Pianet C that was used with tape flanging that made it sound more "glittery".

I don’t see how you could listen to this and not be blown away by Beatles creativity. These guys missed going through the musical evolution process and therefore aren't really equipped to understand what's taking place. They probably prefer some sampling tune or maybe even something traditional. Kinda like giving a critique on an abstract painting from the 40’s and saying thats not a tree. 🤦‍♂️😎

I can kind of see how maybe L A Woman and this song have some similarities. (Not so much Love Me 2 Times). Yet, this is a classic psychedelic song, and ahead of its time. Read the lyrics, almost surreal. E G ‘sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.’ And, ‘ Semolina Pilchard, Climbing up the Eiffel tower Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe ‘

In the 60s and early 70s, stereo was still yet to be common. Radio, TV even record players were still mono. So when the technology arrived, the musicians were discovering what it could do. Remember, 8 track was first used on "Sargent Peppers" but even then, everything was analogue. Digital was still 15 to 20 years down the road. You do need to factor in the technology of the time. Imagine today without any, digital manipulation.

A big factor is the recording norm of the times was a 4 track tape recorder. Thus, to make room for additional instruments, sounds etc they had to move tracks from stereo to mono to add in the 'king lear on the radio' addition That's why you hear it move to mono about half way thru. The fact they did Sgt Peppers and Magical Mystery tour on 4 track tape is mind boggling. Now they have what 128 tracks?

What many of todays people don’t realize was that back then there was no stereo, there was none of the technology that is available today. They were just creative innovative geniuses, they created all the things that today is taken for granted due to today’s technology many of which came about due to their creative innovations. They were just a song writing band they were truly brilliant audio artist. So when evaluating the Beatles take into account not just their music but their innovative thinking g towards music and recording. They expanded the definition of music/art beyond anyone then and now. And they did it in 5 years (64-69) they were like a tornado that came ripping thru the world
