We are aware of Avid discontinuing the free version of Pro Tools, Pro Tools First. This is disappointing to us and we hope that Avid will offer a free version again sometime in the future. It seems that if you already had access to PT First that you will still have access to it now. But if you are trying to acquire it new from a included bundle or something similar, you won't be able to. We still believe that our video provides an incredible step-by-step process of how to record a song from start to finish, regardless of the DAW you use to the plugins you have available. Our process here can help give guidance to those who are just starting out and provide some direction for anyone who may not know where to start. We feel the same about our mixing videos that go along with this series (linked below). Although you can't get Pro Tools First along with all the free plugins anymore, they do provide a good overview of the mixing process and guidance in how to do this process. Enjoy! There is a little trick called audacity and fl studio audio clip importing :P You guys still sold me on it. I'll get in conjunction with a Shure Super 55 though.
Honestly yeah a bit of a bummer, but not really because as a first time DAW user, I found Reaper to offer the best experience so far. And there's a 60 day evaluation period for free.
Logic has a free 90 day trial, and they specifically say that you can download each new version and extend it for another 90 days. Presumably they do this to sell Macs.
They should have put a link to this video in the box because this was extremely helpful. The quality and performance of the song was incredible and inspiring.
Pro Tools First: Make sure pro tools is in punch mode, go up here to the record button, right click and press quick punch. Next open up the transport window. select pre-roll, select the amount of bars it plays before recording. Make sure the track is enabled, and then start recording. Logic: Press 'R' (all jokes aside this a very good vid)
Really good concept for a video form factor. Anyone who has gone so far as to look at the specs of the various Focusrite Scarlett line of devices is looking for practical knowledge without having to earn it the painful (and potentially expensive) way. Applause for Focusrite for sponsoring this video - smart decision. I'm ready to buy one of these anyway but this video certainly did not talk me out of it. Thanks much! 🧐
I use the 2i2 in my home studio. Great gear Your mix is very good. I record Roots Blues so my mixes sound cleaner but the quality is there. You guys rock Old School Blues artist Los Angeles
This makes it look too easy, it's not XD. It takes a lot of time to make everything come together, but non the less it inspired me, even though I already planned on getting a home studio, this video solidified that decision for me. Thanks for making everything clear and understandable in this video, appreciate it.
You're right, it definitely takes a lot of time and effort. We needed to condense everything down for a more digestible video! We're glad you are inspired, feel free to chime back in with any updates. Thanks for watching!
Go on man. I'm 6 years in and my only regret is not having started sooner. It is hard, and it is time consuming (I know a couple producers and we all went through a "no social life" phase because of this crap hahaha) but it is more than worth it. Being able to take the music out of your head and into the real world feels like magic... once all the work is done that is.
Do you see on the plug-in, in the upper top, a small red circle? This circle means that the system is hardware-based. T e or tdm or xd. There are boards with chips, a digidesign and an interface for audio inputs, outputs with top-end DACs and ADCs. This is not focusrite.

I've been toying with the 2i2 as I've recently started playing guitar and keys again. I also just had a good day, so plumped for the 2i2 studio bundle with the Scarlett CM25 mic and headphones... basically what you used here, but the full 2-channel version. I reckon it will be more than enough for my current standard. Basically I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video tutorial because it really is down to earth and inspiring. Thank you 🙏🏼
i have purchased my Scarlett 3rd gen 2i2. i have already installed the pro tools first DAW upon registering my product. when i tried looking for the eleven lite guitar amp plug in like you did in your video at 7:05, but i cant find any guitar amps.. what do i do?
I gotta say this...as a guy who had his own home studio back in the mid 90s when you needed a multri-track recorder, a drum machine, a keyboard, an effects processor, a vocal synthesizer etc - then teaching myself the digital way of Pro Tools, Fl Studio and thousands of plug-ins this video is amazing. I've never seen any channel talk about this starter packages other than bashing them, you went from unboxing to setup to recoding each track and actually made a pretty damn nice song if I must say so all with a $250 kit. Job well done
Actually a great bare bones pro tools breakdown. I like your “no worries” approach to song production. Song didn’t suffer at all because of mono limitation Great, fun little tune. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. ps studio setup looks clean and well thought out. Nice.

I had gotten this as a Christmas gift from my Dad, I had recorded basically a whole album with it. It was unfortunately stolen along with all my vinyl records, its a great piece of equipment for anyone who's interested in at home recording.
I got that Scarlett Solo Studio bundle couple of weeks ago. I was unlucky and the cheap condenser microphone was broken out of the box. Lot of static from it even before turning the phantom power on and much worse with phantom power on and gain up. Unfortunately I didn't have another microphone to isolate the cause so I bought a Shure SM58 (which is always useful and I know really well) and that works great. Thankfully the company I bought the bundle from will replace or repair the broken Scarlett microphone and I have a great dynamic to use in the meantime. I also contacted Focusrite and their support was great. Everything else in the bundle working great.

10 years back i only could dream of having some device like this.. i think i might pick it up so i can start recording some demo's.. sound quality is really good as well.
Hey Pixel, I'll be purchasing my first recording equipment this week. Researching over 3 years to understand recording process (still learning)... but this video sealed the deal for me. I truly love everything about your song, the easy to understand instructions, and good vibes that come through. Will be working with Reaper - and whatever free software that currently come with it and Focusrite 2i2 4th generation. Question: Would you suggest CONDENSER or DYNAMIC mic? I'm an absolute beginner so will gladly take any helpful tips from anyone! Thanks!
Well, my Scarlett Solo did not come with Pro Tools...it came with Ableton. But, I wanted to tell you that I really liked your song! TFS and good luck guys!
Thank you! As you won't get a free version of ProTools any longer with this interface, there are still some free software included and you can always try other free DAWs that are out there.
Ableton is a pretty respectable quality program used by many known and unknown music producers. Also has maaaaaany tutorials by the company itself and many free EQs and sounds! Have fun ;)
It's a great video with a lot of useful things. I will say that I strongly prefer using 3 or more mics on drums. The only way to have the punch of the bass is to near-mic it. And then you have to have at least two other mics. You can find 4-input interfaces for under $100, and you can buy Pyle 57 mics for $13 each. So it doesn't have to be expensive.
@@Chinama104 OK, you've had eleven months to play with this rig - what's the verdict? Would you buy it again? Why? Why not? If no, what would you get instead? Help us neewbs out!
Damn, I got myself a Steinberg interface similar to this interface, looks good though. I'll use this to be a general guide on what I can do with my beginner, frankenstein'd set up
Great video, two questions on the video/product. 1. The options on the plug ins you used. When you selected the drums. Are they all the options included for free or did you get a bonus pack? 2. When you recorded vocals did you just plus the music track or did you mix in the sound from the mic recording you? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your questions. 1) Everything we used came free with the included software. 2) When we recorded vocals we played the music and also monitored ourselves. Unless you hate it, it's good to hear yourself when signing to make sure you're on pitch.
@@Pixelproaudio Huh, silly me - I thought signing was for deaf people. You must have GREAT hearing... I'm sorry man... I was born a smart-arse and just can't help myself! But it was a great set-up line!!! And if I had a dollar for every grammar mistake I ever made, we both could retire rich. BTW, really nice video. I'm so new to this I don't even know what I don't know. But this video helped fill in some pretty big gaps in my education, so thanks for that. And yeah, I subbed!
Not watched yet, buy you should do a stereo set up too...I dont think you can hook up two mics with that interface but it would still be useful for folk recording acoustic.
