I once sold all my stuff too. Then realized I needed some stuff. I bought that stuff but also a little more. Then sold the more. Now only have the stuff. Enough stuff.
You dislike my v*deos? Are you just a h8er boi? I say see you l8er boi. Don't watch my stuff anymore. Your dislikes are damaging my good reputation. I am a superstar, dear ben
@@lindyn4 it’s probably more of the fact that almost no one would sell everything they own. Not a personality thing, more of a thought about how extreme this move was
i love how she mentioned that she felt free but also felt the judgement / concern about not having "an address." I never really thought of it like that, but deciding to go against that judgement seems so powerful. very inspiring Matt. Thanks for sharing :)
you can't be joyful if you are hungry. seriously though this minimalism thing is only applicable to people who is wealthy enough. How can you apply minimalist if you do not even have a home.
Natalie saying "freedom to be found in living lighter" and the whole turing thing...self-judegment...PREACH. Spot-on. So refreshing to hear this honest conversation.

WE’RE EXCITED TO HAVE YOU!! I hope the stress passes soon, that you have a toasty (but not too toasty because wow it’s been WARM) Aussie Christmas. If you and Nat ever hit up the Gold Coast for a beachy weekend away hit me up! Sending love ❤️
Natalie, I’m with you girl! I turned thirty in 2020 and I’m “starting over” in many ways. All the negative self talk is real! But you’re not alone and it’s ok! Life is made up of seasons and this is just another season that you (and I am as well) are beginning. It’s not backward or forward, it’s just new. Best of luck.
Me after literally decluttering my room today: "It's weird not having that stuff there..woah so much space" Matt the same day: "So yeah I got rid of everything I own"
I can relate. Moving for whatever reason/s is always stressful! Good luck and I wish you both continued success and much happiness wherever you go. Stay well.
Honestly, moving to Australia during this pandemic is probably one of the best decision of your life. America would probably not be the same for a while but Australia now is back to normal and some occasional covid cases here and there but its quickly controlled by the cooperation of the people and the government. Its great living here.
You said this before Victoria’s lockdown... normal compared to America, yes... normal in general, not quite... but hopefully soon with vaccine almost upon us.
Matt, we both quit our jobs and sold most of our stuff back in early 2019 and went to Australia for one year. BEST. DECISION. EVER. We've had the time of our lives and want to keep doing it (waiting for all this mess to go away). It is scary, but it's easier than you think. You are going to love the experience. Funny note, you are one of those who made us take the decision to have less, and now we are the ones telling you everything is going to be alright :D Keep up the excellent work, and hope you have a wonderful birthday.
New decisions bring in new experiences. This is *your* new journey. Not many people make these decisions. I am excited for your both. Wishing you the very best.
I'm so happy for you guys!!! Myself and my husband been far away from home for 2 years now and as much we want to buy comfort things as many there are things from the past and it doesn't help to look forward, every moving out/in is terrifying just because of amount of all the stuff. Anyways, my congratulations for moving on and wish you an amazing reunion with your friends and family. Also, very happy for your documentary going on Netflix!! I'm sure it will inspire dosens of people to think about their lives and focus on the current personality rathr than past or future. Looking forward to see!
Two years ago my husband and I sold almost everything to travel the world in our mid-40s. It definitely gives a different perspective on life, but I still struggle at times with what Natalie talked about around the 4 minute mark. We’ve had 6 months of down time in Malaysia now, and we are ready to get back on the road. Here’s to safe and fun adventures ahead, guys! 🥂
Haha yeah she's doing great thanks for asking. I was fully prepared to store all our stuff in a storage locker for her but she came around and decided this was the most practical solution.
When I turned 30, I took a full year sabbatical to travel around the world with my partner, now wife. We went through the same process as you, selling, donating and giving up most of our possessions. I was daunting then, but liberating afterwards. That year was pivotal in my life. It made me more open to experiences, more resilient, more adaptive and more tolerant to uncertainty. Since returning, I took a better job than I had before, live in a better place than before and improved my life and wellbeing having realised during that nomadic year what I truly value in life. Our circumstances are different, but I am convinced that this move, however stressful it may feel now, will ultimately make you better, Matt and Natalie. Best wishes onto the adventure that awaits you!
Even though I struggle really hard to implement minimalism in my everyday life and to have a minimalistic lifestyle I’m still amazed by how easy it is to follow your thoughts on this. You’re such an inspiration and you even pushed me to start my own RU-vid channel. Thank you Matt!😊❤️
Yay! You're going to Sydney 😀 We haven't been able to get back there since Covid, so it'll be nice to see our home city through your lens. We did the big sell of stuff just before we started travelling a bit over a year ago. So stressful, but liberating once it's done. I was watching your videos as I did it to help myself embrace the concept of minimalism. Looking forward to seeing what the next stage of your journey has in store for you both 😊
My husband and I are starting to explore minimalism. There’s been times that I’ve thought about how much I’d love to just walk out the door, get in the car and leave. We are struggling with giving up things, like even books I haven’t read yet, the only important things I’d definitely want to take, are our family pictures, and a weeks worth of cloths, I’m not sure I want to keep my smart phone! Our dogs and our kids, how freeing this could be! I’m excited to follow you and wish you much joy.
Love how open and frank you & Nat are in verbalizing and compromising your wants/needs! Above all of the groundbreaking minimalist/being productive stuff I truly admire seeing how you both grow in your relationship 💚
Matt, we did the same turn almost 6 years ago. I, my wife, and two sons sold everything and moved from Brazil to Perth, Western Australia. With nothing but a few bags, not good English (still), no job, no money, we figured it out. So, good on you, mate. Happy days. Enjoy the trip that everything will be ok.

Matt: "So I think under normal circumstances it might upset me to have my clothes in piles all over the ground" Me glancing at my piles of clothes on the ground with no reasonable explanation
I've never used a dresser in my life and I couldn't be happier about that. All that time that I would've spent folding clothes I spent doing something that actually makes me happy like watching porn or doing cocaine. It's just really freeing, you know?
I can't describe how proud I am of you three (Matt, Joshua & Ryan), I've been a long time follower and you guys always find a way to add value. The documentary is now added to my list and I can't wait to gobble it up. So exciting to see all your hard work paying off! Also good luck with the move, hope it all goes smoothly. Take care Matt & Natalie, we'll still be here once you've settled in your new home!
I can relate to that... I am living in the U.S. and haven't been home to Europe for over 5 years now, but I have that idea of moving back there in the near future as well and I have been very mindful about the stuff I buy and own for that reason, in addition to other reasons... I will eventually go back home with two suitcases at most. It helps being a minimalist :)
WOW! You guys are moving to Sydney!!! I also sold everything before moving here, it was hectic, I wanted to have everything I own fit in a small hatchback and... I accomplished that for almost two years! I live in Cronulla now! I hope to be able to see you guys someday and say hi!
You inspired me right now to do “the marie kondo” method one more time this year and to get rid of SOME of my stuff, just so that I can enter this year more peacefully. Thank you!
Cool👌 i have been tryong to get to a point where i would be an intentionalist. But the biggest part of what is still 'cluttering up' the space in my bathroom are 2 baskets still jammed full with old, expired products i got gifted or bought to try out a million years ago. So for the past i dont know 3 yrs ive been trying to use up all the products i have that i dont like, cause i cant do anything with them otherwise. I cant throw it out that is a huge waste, all tge resources and man hour that went into them. And i cant donate them cause most of them are expires or were used once. I feel like im pretty organized with my shelves in the bedroom but all the other stuff is always just a grinch inhabitat. And it would take a full couple of days to organize my desk and papers again. 🙃 and its exam season so i cant
We are moving back to the US next week after a year and a half in Brazil. We are my husband, my adult son with a disability and I. When we came we sold everything except for 6 suitcases we brought with us. Now we are returning with only 2 carry-ons, 3 backpacks and my son's dog. That is going to be all our possessions for some time and we are excited about it. It's good to see we are not the only crazy people!
Congrats!! Hope you guys get some moments of calm in the storm. Thank you for all your hard work in helping others. My Grandmother was from Australia and I have a ton of family I’ve never met. Some day soon I’d love to go. We are getting rid of all our stuff currently to buy and live in an RV for a year with our kids. Hoping to document a lot of the journey. Might have to stay away from Cali sadly. Best wishes to you guys!
Congratulations on moving to Australia. I love the Country and would live there if I could. You are moving forward in your life. Spending more time with your family and friends is really importation and it's a move forward to value that. Good luck and God Bless!
I sold everything I didn't need it was awesome, I got quality stuff only, and as for all my childhood memories/etc. I got an indoor storage unit. Super useful!
How liberating! Good luck with everything Matt. With the your skillset, hard work & creativity, you won't be in trouble (Just choose to trust it:) To be honest, this sounds so exciting to me. I wonder which one of you made the decision (would be impossible for me to convince my hubby to sell the PS!), but this is probably the best time for a change at this scale coz it gets harder to as you get older.. We live in a 45sq m tiny Japanese apartment and we've been quite intentional with what we buy as well, but the stuff we accumulated is starting to overwhelm me as an aspiring minimalist. Every day, thoughts of getting rid of EVERYTHING (including my photo albums of 20k pics) excites me. I don't feel courageous enough yet, but your move is really inspiring! Expect both challenges & fun surprises in the process of adaptation to the new life of course but I hope you can embrace the adventure and hold onto trust (I believe good people like you have nothing to fear!:). Wishing you all the best! Ps: As for anxiety, have you read 5-second rule by Mel Robbins, I just finished it and her process is a very useful guide to bust anxiety.
