One of the scariest parts of our journey into traveling the world full time was in selling our house. We have had a lot of questions about this and we hope to answer most of those in this video. This was one of our Financial Independence tools that got us to retire even earlier than we could have ever hoped.
If you are new here, we are just your average British couple with an extraordinary dream to travel and as such, sold our house and all our stuff so that we could explore the world for the next 10 years, seeing different cultures, meeting interesting people and sharing it from our perspective.
All of our travel will be cost-effective, we do not have a huge budget! if you think you'd find that interesting and useful, why not subscribe, we would love you to come on the journey with us.

If I sold now I could raise £300,000. I would buy a 2 bed apartment for £150,000 and rent that out at £650pm giving £500pm net (£6000pa). The £150,000 I still have I would divide that by 10 giving £15,000 per year plus the £6000 rent = £21,000pa. Budget per year £21,000 equates to £1750.00 per month. As I am in my mid 50's I will return to the UK at age 65 in which I will then collect my government pension and private pension. The apartment I rented out will then become my home and my two pensions my income. If things become too tight I could always rent the spare bedroom for a tax free income.

@@sct4040 if you are providing high-quality accommodation and go through a decent management company the tenants are vetted. Bad tenants are rare in such cases, because they pay a security deposit held by a third party, and any damage is going to see the landlord retain that. Where you get bad tenants in in the "grey zone" where it's dodgy landlords flying under the radar, not declaring rental income, and generally providing a dubious service. Having said that I think a bigger worry is that governments of all colours see BTL landlords as a sitting duck when it comes to tax revenue. George Osborne was a classic example of this. Some of those sorts of problems can be avoided by owning and renting through a Ltd Company. Not without its downsides though. Both my brother and sister are long time landlords and have done extremely well. I decided against because politically BTLs are a target, and I make a better return elsewhere...

Lets look at the positives by not owning a house, you have saved 4,500 a year on utilities, council tax, tv licence, insurance let alone factoring in repairs. Instead your house is keeping you via investment income if needed or by allowing you to reinvest your dividends compounding your returns. Many assume that owning a house is a one way bet always, increasing in value, but it is not always the case. By travelling light you can enjoy what you are doing rather than carrying a load of baggage. I wish you well and hope you make it to the end of your 10 year trip and i am alive to keep following your journey.

Hey Michael! Well that is our thinking also We are very careful in our videos not to talk down any options for investment, because as we know investments are tricky and can go up or down. But we like the feeling of not being bogged down with having a property in the UK to think about and then reducing those costs. We were talking to each other a couple of days ago and worked out that when we add together the Council Tax, Utilities and Insurance that we paid in the UK, we are now staying in an amazing apartment that costs less than that and someone else is needing to pick up the repair costs etc. It feels like a great life hack to us... but there are multiple ways of investing for the future and almost all are very valid. Thanks for the cool comment! Best wishes Neil & Sarah

You make an excellent point! My property taxes in New York, USA are sky high, nearly 20K a year, then HOA, another 17K a year and as you say maintenance and utilities and on and on!!! And all of that keeps coming in long after the house is "paid" for! Add it all up and it eats away at whatever appreciation one might experience and with the coming collapse in the economy and the bursting of the housing bubble, I think we home-owners are in for a nasty awakening. So it seems to me, one never really OWNS a house.

@@admindesk2760 Wow 37 k a year before you eat, it is good when property prices increase but i can always remember a once in a lifetime trip we made for 2 weeks to Vegas, it was about 2009 when the last economic crisis was really bitting, every mall had stalls trying to sell property at knock down prices from the banks or other loan organisation, which made a change from the stalls wanting to buy gold. On a trip out to the hover dam and grand canyon I think the place was called boulder city just outside vegas the bus driver pointed out this city, saying most of the homes were now owned by the bank a city with very few inhabitants street after street of empty properties, and wrecked lives very sad. At the time we lived in Spain their property fell by 50% and banks were fore closing on property in the end it became so bad that a group was formed to stop the banks taking property back, they would cement the doors up and have pickets to prevent the property being taken back. Whilst the biggest laugh was in the end the bank reprosest so many houses they more or less gave up, as soon as the property was repossessed the banks became liable for any back taxes utility bills and community charges. Which is bearable for a few hundred properties but when it ran into many thousands of homes i think it caused them a great deal of problems. I hate to think what is coming our way, i believe we are now back in the late 1970/80 with stagflation, which will kill most people dreams and will be a real problem for many.

I am seventy six and a few years ago we decided to sell our house and rent. Buying a house when you are young makes sense but we figure we can pay rent for the rest of our life and still be well ahead. The only caution would be pick a country with good tenant protection, or where you can move easily.

I really admire the 2 of you, taking the plunge into retirement travel. It’s something that I’d like my husband and I to do. At the moment my investment advisor has said that at our current rate of spending we’ll never run out of money, but I’m still nervous about taking the plunge. Currently we do take advantage of shoulder seasons for travel as the money goes further, and we don’t like crowds so we like to visit places when there’s less people. I’m not sure that we could sell up like you did but a 6 month travel, 6 months home for the first couple of years would let us ‘dip our toe’ into long term travel. Essentially at the end of the day all this rambling was to say thanks for the inspiration guys, I’ve been enjoying both places you’re exploring and learning about the financial side of long term travel.

My wife and I love Turkey and we were in exactly the same location in Antalya two weeks ago and started from the viewing platform above the harbour to walk down to the boats, lovely little restaurants along the way as well. Hey Mark! Isn't Antalya beautiful, real picture postcard type location. It is a big step to sell up to travel but we found it like a tipping point, when we started to think about it, it felt very uncomfortable, then as the months and years passed, we couldn't wait to get started and felt that owning a house was just holding us back. But of course, everyone is different. Best wishes Neil & Sarah

Thank you for putting out there that the value of owning a house is maybe not all it’s cracked up to be. In our case, when added up the unrecoverable costs of home ownership such as property tax, interest payments, maintenance, etc. I am hard pressed to see how it was a money maker even when we sold it for twice what we paid. Our property tax and insurance were almost as much as our mortgage payment. I agree that investing is a better way to make money. We now live in a maintenance free rental and are sooo much happier and less stressed than we we owned a house. Not worried about buying a new house because we won’t. On another subject, as we also do some long term travel, we try to find locations and activities that provide some semblance of contributing to your individual purpose and meaning. Is that something you two struggle with?
@2GoRoam
@2GoRoam 2 года назад
Hey John! Yes, yes, yes. We find it difficult in videos to not shout "Don't do it!" about home ownership but there is so much conditioning into thinking that owning a house is a right of passage that people would not appreciate that approach, we are sure. Lovely living in a rental isn't it.... something breaks... it's someone elses issue to deal with for a change. Your question is absolutely perfect for something we have planned. We are recording a Q&A video that will be coming out on the 14th May and your question will be included so check back and we will answer this one directly in the video. Really good question. Another great video! Great to hear more about your long term plans. I’m curious how you are both enjoying/managing the social aspects your travels? I watched another RU-vidr today who has been traveling with his wife for 4 years staying in a single place at a time. They seemed to have loved it but have decided to test out a home base and travel from there for awhile. This would allow them more time to build longer term social networks. This has been one of our concerns with slow nomad life. You two clearly enjoy each other’s company, so maybe this isn’t an issue for you! 😁

We actually met someone just yesterday and arranged to go for a beer with him at the weekend. This is something that we think about and work to improve on as we travel. Just being open and listening to people. We actually met a young lad in Kas, Turkey from the US, he was 20 and we had so much to talk about, we all went out a few times, that was lovely. We are doing exactly what these people have done. We leave in 2 weeks. There are so many objections to doing it along the way that people will come up with. Needing a home to come back to, needing a security blanket, friends and family etc. But at the end of the day, you only live once.. and it's those fears that stop so many people who could do great things like this, from doing it. Every single person we know thinks its the greatest thing ever, says it's "courageous" (not so sure about that), and all of them say they could never do it, or can't seem to fathom how they could afford to do it. They can keep going to work. We are going to live in some foreign countries and experience life while we can. You can't do that at 70 in the same way.

Guys, I admire your courage: sell everything to go travel for 10 years! I could never do that. Home means a LOT to me: my pace of comfort, piece and stability. I travel a lot! Been almost everywhere, but always love to come back home. How do you manage? never get tired to be on a road? How do you do your medical check up and health care? Do you miss your friends? I can travel 2 months in a row, go exotic places, like last time it was Tibet, Nepal, China and base camp Everest. But I can only truly appreciate it when I get home and have time to stop, digest and share experience with friends/family. I still work, but only because I love my job and this kind of social interaction is very important to me. Thank you fro sharing your experience, but it must be tough...

Loving the videos guys, well done on the roaming retirement! We are planning a similar adventure starting in 2023, although slightly different from the path you are on. We plan to rent out our house in Canada, which will allow us to build a villa in Thailand. We will use Thailand as a base to travel around the world (low cost living) and still have a place to come back to for a few months between trips. Once we have finished with the travel bug, we will decide if we want to go back to Canada, stay in Thailand or sell it all and settle in an entirely new location. Best of luck in the travels, enjoy all the world has to offer. Cheers!

Hi guys. Quick one for your Q&A on the 14th. Would be great to hear more about the off camera social life of slow travellers, i.e. do you actively go out to meet people at each destination you visit, i.e. arrange to meet for a meal, drinks etc., and do you meet fellow RU-vidrs on your travels? Thanks

We’re heading back over the pond later this Fall to resume our slow travel property search - I’m not sure I can convince my husband to go to Turkey, much less Thailand but in any case, we’re exploring. When we sold our house, plenty of people told us they thought we were crazy. I guess we’ll see when we tally up the final score card won’t we? 🤣 BTW, I’m stealing your database of places idea - we’ve so far been relying on memory but that won’t work once we’ve seen a few more places. Just subscribed so I can keep tabs on you and your future videos 😎

I left the UK, the country I love, 14 years ago. I left a well paid job and voted with my feet after Gordon Brown and the banks messed up the economy in 2008/9. I've lived in Kazakhstan, China for 6 years and Thailand for 7 years. I have travelled the length of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and have a long list of other places to visit. As a UK passport holder we're very lucky and can visit Australia, New Zealand, India, Malaysia and The Philippines for longer periods than the standard 30 days. So let's travel. P.S. I'm not going home! Best wishes from Bangkok.

Great vlog again. Interesting concept and probably on the money. We too don't own a house, but own 4 rental properties all to be sold next year. Darren work pays for a rental house as part of his wage package that we have been in for 5 years. We have Superannuation here in Australia that we hope will make enough each year so we don't eat into the capital. Travelling for the next 5 yrs plus in our new motorhome in 14 mths will be our adventure. PS. show us more of the places you visit. Turkey looks really good. We were and will be otherwise invested (the likelihood of the bottom dropping out of the equity markets has us in temporarily in cash and a tiny crypto position). We plan to intently research possible super-affordable retirement places and then spend a year visiting our top 10. Unless it’s too probing, would love to know more about your fire number, how you got there, and where you have it invested to meet your long term spending needs 😀. I love you guys and your videos so much! I was really thrilled with your response to the ten year question. My husband and I plan to do slow travel after he retires in two years. One of our goals in slow travel will also be to determine where we’d like to settle down once we’re done traveling. Retirement here in the USA seems more and more unattainable every year. ☹️. Right now we are very interested in settling down in Ecuador or Portugal. However, we will be doing what y’all are doing and checking out places all over the world to make sure every option has been considered, to the best of our ability. I’m so very grateful that we have pioneers, such as yourselves, to guide us! 😁 Absolutely breathtaking scenery there, too! 😮😍😍😍 Btw…..I also suffer from the same thing as Sarah…..always right! Hey Lorrie! Sounds like you are looking at this slow travel thing in a similar way to us and we think that makes a lot of sense (that is why we are doing it). We get a lot of questions from people about where we would want to settle, but the luxury of this lifestyle is that we don't need to rush the answer to that question but here is something that you have to look forward to... When you travel, there will always be a conversation between you of.... "Could we live here?" that is actually a really fun chat as when you get into it, things really do get down to brass tacks... it isn't always about the amazing sunset in a location... often it can be something pretty mundane where you think that because of that you Could/Couldn't live in a certain location. Fun times ahead Lorrie! Best wishes Neil & Sarah

Hi guys, enjoying your stuff and plan to do something similar in a couple of years. But, as a videographer, can I make a suggestion? Your audio is great, but shooting in bright sunlight is blowing the highlights on your videos. I'm not sure what you're filming on, but see if it has an option to shoot in 'log'. If not, see if you can turn down the contrast as much as possible while recording as this may keep more detail in your faces. Anyway, best of luck and enjoy the travels.

you should have a place where to fall back to..... like buying a small condo in your favorite place in UK and rent it out while in your 10 years of world travel...... if you fall in love with a place where $1,500 is plenty to live like thailand, philippines, vietnam, or any place in eastern europe you can settle here but you still have a place you can call your own in UK.

That is an ongoing liability when traveling. Dealing with tenants that dont pay, paying higher tax that maybe other investments. There is a very good reason to jettison all the things that tie up capital so you can use it more freely and productively. They will always have money to come back to buy with, if they decide. Home ownership at 65 or 70 is not necessarily a great idea. Use your money, that's what you built it up for.

This is a common fear that every single person we talk to about our early retirement and travel seems to bring up. There is this ingrained concern about access to healthcare that stops people from stepping out of the box and living life in the moment. You cant sit around waiting for that moment you require healthcare. It may never come. You also may be able to access very good care, without insurance, at reasonable costs in other countries. Life is about tradeoffs, and living until a very old age - is not, in my opinion (from watching relatives get elderly) always the best outcome in life.

If you're single and own a UK house, it's easy to get in lodgers and then travel away for 2 weeks at a time, seeing areas of the world in bites. For me, it's always good to come back to my own kitchen, bed and neighbourhood. So much cheaper and healthier to cook your own food. It also means continuity and stability. EU (and further) flights can be very reasonable, live in hostels if seriously budgeting and the rest is walking around, local food and experiencing. I normally go for the artwork, so all destinations need decent galleries. But after getting to know the major EU cities and galleries, maybe more time in nature would be good.
@JayandSarah
@JayandSarah 5 месяцев назад
The point is that spending any amount of time early retired in the UK if a waste of your cash. The cost of living for any of the time you spend here would be way in excess of most countries these people are visiting.

Hey Erin! Something to think about is, when or if you do come out of the housing market, what would you do with the proceeds from the house? invest it? Would that investment grow at the same pace of house prices? Evidence shows that in the past it has... so in real terms, in many cases, when or if you want to get back into the market, you would find that your money would but the same size house or better. Appreciate the video. To own or not to own… It’s a personal choice and facts and circumstances play a large roll. One approach would have been to downsize your home in the UK and rent it out while you travel. Being a landlord isn’t for everyone (especially while you are off traveling the world) but you can hire a property manager to take care of everything. Depending on the circumstances (own outright, mortgage etc) you can use that income stream for traveling. But even if you carry a mortgage and break even (or not) it basically gives you an “option” and participation in your home base property market and serves to diversify your capital. To each there own and I am sure you have considered all your options. No doubt everyone has an opinion and lively conversation or debate could ensue. As long as you are comfortable with your approach is all that matters. Rates are trending hire now but if you put some money down on a small flat, got cheap rate etc you likely could rent it out the next ten years and do very well.

Hey Mark! Very cool comment... you know what we think is super cool about your comment (and we are going off at a tangent here) is that with this being RU-vid and everyone is somewhat anonymous, we find that it is easy to fall into the 'telling' in comments... so your comment could have read (very subtly different) I think in you selling your house and not buying, you have made a mistake. What your comment has done from top to bottom is to tell us your approach to investment, which we appreciate and absolutely support... while at the same time appreciating that we have considered our own options and as you say "To each their own". This makes you a fantastic commenter and we want you in the comments every week. To not comment on our videos, we think would be a mistake :-) Best wishes Neil & Sarah

Yep Stone is a popular haven for escaping Brummies. My Dad headed to Lichfield from our native Solihull where I still live before he passed. Even being Jewish he met a lady for company and became a valued member of their church community! He loved showing his granddaughters there he was so proud. Anyway back to the slow tourism. One night late 2000s. I’m on a beach at Holetown Barbados at night.. Been swimming with giant turtles, saw Cliff Richards’ house which my Mum would have loved! A beautiful star sky, gentle steel drum music playing as I sipped another dark rum.. Watching a cruise ship sailing away from Bridgetown having visited for the day.. My thought process.. They’ve paid hundreds into thousands.. Yet they’ve no idea of this wonderful calm atmosphere after their busy excursion trip. They’ve no connection to these wonderfully warm kind people. I’m short they saw a few great things but never gained any concept of the island life! I equate it to Brits who go to Tenerife for a week or two. Eat and Get drunk in tourist haunts on the night and sunbathe/sleep it off all day by the pool. They come back to the UK with the conceit they know Tenerife! In reality just like my aforementioned Barbados account.. They know nothing of the incredibly beautiful island, the real sights, scenery or the real people! Loved your “ rockstar” lifestyle aspect! Another great YT video! I think I”ll be playing it safe and keeping my apartment in Solihull as opposed to selling and investing elsewhere. That said I will always welcome your advice Neil.. I’m an outside Brummie being Solihull born and bred Neil. But Lordy.. Everyone in the Uk says the best part of a visit to Brum is the journey back! My own daughter lives in London and she isn’t a Brum fan. If it wasn’t for Aston Villa and my hopes I’d have gone already. Not meaning to sound like a traitor but having stayed on many locations in the North, Lancashire Preston and others Yorkshire, Cleveland/Durham … Some years ago I was in a back street pub in Rochdale. Lisa Stansfiekd had made an impromptu visit to her hometown from her Irish tax haven with her husband, sister and daughters. She downed g and t’s and spoke to all the women talking about their kids. Astonishingly she actually knew some of their kids names! She went outside to smoke then returned and under some encouragement blasted out two songs whilst playing the pub piano. I was mesmerised as although a fan from many years before, I had no idea if what close live talent looks like! Lisa was so warm and engaging, several photos on about two previous iPhones! But to me it summed up the Northern community feelings..She was so normal, so warm, not a hint of celeb about her in a biker jacket, big collar white shirt and jeans. Just assimilated as a normal regular Mum with no edges.I’d have to say that my own city and surrounding regions.. are crap! Like Sarah with the Stoke thing and East End Londoners moving out to Essex and Kent. Brum can’t match these regions for character, culture, warmer people, sense of belonging/community etc.. I apologise in advance Sarah and Neil but if Brum is your fave place in the nation??! Each to his or/and her own!! Can’t agree with you at all there! As much as it pains me to say..My Dad was a real brummie. He used to call my accent posh despite my Brum twang Partly attributable to the Solihull upbringing he afforded us through years of hard work in the engineering business. Which was tough going in those years..
@larrystein2393
@larrystein2393 2 года назад
But as I think you’re hoping for. You want to find a location to settle together that is economically viable but still in touch with your Dad and Sarah’s mom that grants you easy access to get back home if/when needed.. That’s a little tricky. I love France in every way.. Was a long standing dream for me and I’m just about competent in a short conversation.. But the inflation and cost of living is scary! You can’t retire to a country that has a higher cost of living than Brum! Despite what Macron had promoted there’s no signs of improvement. Yes properties are cheaper by far and bills are half of the Uk. But the cost to eat sky rockets well above the UK. Numbeo confirms this.. It’s a difficult situation. I have an apartment on the Mediterranean Riviera by Alanya in Turkey. I could live there like half a millionaire! Bit can I live there.. Not sure. Only time will tell! It remains a possibly as I don’t want to be cold on winters and the people there are amazing. My sea view 2/3 bed apartment cost me 42 K Euros in 2019. The same place on the Costa’s in Spain would have cost me 210/220k which wouldn’t have happened!’ That said not due I can cope with mid 40 heheh/ 44/45 Celsius daily from end of June to September! My lady last Summer gave up applying her makeup. There was no point even at night as it just sweats straight off! As you say Neil, there’s always options.. it’s just that at our ages, we need to evaluate them quickly as our abilities and opportunities will diminish as time takes over us! On that note.. Loving your videos. Glad to have found you both here.. A great couple. I’m anticipating your next releases! Love from near Brum. Keep up your great work.. Oh and think about rekindling your twitter account. It drives traffic in a big way..Throw enough mud..and some of in will stick I think the old saying states! See you both soon, stay safe Neil and z Sarah :)

You are right in so many ways. I also sold my house last year, and it promptly went up 25% over the subsequent 12 months. :-( I was so smart to put the profits into a diversified global portfolio. Which is now down 18%. :-( I've lost more than a nice home or two, and have not even begun to do my foreign slow travel. 2022 is an awful year from financial perspectives. Thanks, Vladimir Putin. I need to present your videos to my wife, so she will fear less about the financial future.

You deserve to loose your money if you think that Putin is solely responsible for your lost. BTW, I lived in Boulder for 16 years.

I bet the housing market in the UK has gone up a lot more than the stock market for the last year or two. If it's anything like North America where prices are up 25% to 35% over just the last year (depending on the area) and than that would equal several years of average stock gains.

We are from NA. Just sold our places and doing what this couple did. Prices reach a pretty major peak with low rates, they are not likely to advance much further, except with inflationary pressure or currency devalution and wage increases. After several homes in my life, I will NEVER buy another property again. THey are like boat anchors that tie you down.

Interesting vlog as always. Lovely areas you have been in recently but quick questions- how long have you stayed per resort ? - this links to you not being able to visit the falls you mentioned in your stay in Anatalya. Or was the car still playing up? And how do you manage with basic things like laundry if you are moving along place too place quickly? Launderettes? Hotel laundry service? Handwashing? Just wondering. Intrigued to know where you are now after seeing your reply to Kieran below.

Hey Alegna! Brilliant questions! So we decided in Turkey to do fairly fast travel and were in most locations for just a few days. 1 day here, a week there, 3 days in another place. We really wanted to do the road trip thing and just move as the feeling took us. What we did though was to take notes of places we want to visit for much longer in the future in Turkey. Probably our favourite place was Kas and Antalya, lovely spots. The car was a nightmare.... It had done 80k miles when we picked it up and it felt like it.... :-) Washing is the biggest issue when doing that kind of trip. That was the most complex logistic! We basically have 7 days of clothes with us.... so that means, we would maybe stay in a hotel for a week, but then would either need an Airbnb or some hand washing. But then networking places to get washing done in the strangest of places. All the fun of travel! Best wishes Neil & Sarah

I think there is a difference between real estate investing and viewing the home you live in as an investment. I feel that a home is not really an investment, it's a lifestyle choice. In the U.S., the cost of home ownership includes mortgage interest, mortgage insurance, transfer taxes and fees, home owners insurance, property taxes, maintenance, upgrades and remodels, in some cases association fees... did I miss anything? Oh yeah... then there is the amortization of your mortgage payments, where the majority of your payment goes toward the interest and not the principal for many years.... Which starts over every time you buy a new home or refinance. I think you see what I'm getting at here. If most home owners did the real math, they would realize that owning a home is not the investment they think it is. To be clear, I'm not saying home ownership is a poor choice. But, it is more of a lifestyle choice than it is an investment. Ummm... Rant over? 😂. We don't miss home ownership one bit. Carry on you two rockstars 😎

Hey Skip! WOW! Well said... I feel the basis of a video coming from this one comment.... Funny, I use to say to Sarah years ago, after mowing the lawn and relaxing with a drink.... "You know have a fine place here, they should be proud to own this." Because as you say in those early years of mortgage so little principle is coming off that something seems off (then I learnt about compounding and it all made sense and also made me wish I was a mortgage company more than a 'home owner'). Love this comment!!!!! Best wishes Neil & Sarah

The answer is “NO” you won’t come back to the UK it will be too expensive for you, you will retire in a beautiful place where cost of living is low, life is slow and medical is cheap. That’s right that’s your answer. Enjoy life to the fullest with no regrets my friends before you leave this earth for ever.

For your future place to live you have to think about the climate, I would be wary about going really hot, being hot all the time sounds good, but you do get sick of never being able to be cool. The ease of returning to the UK - direct flights and cost. Other expats in the area, you might want to mix with the locals, but maybe not 100% of the time. I also surmise that in 10 years you will be able to collect your pensions, state or otherwise for income, so it is important that you know the consequences of collecting your state pension in the country where you reside (Australia is not good, you are only paid at the rate you get on the first day, it never increases). And finally, luckily you have no children or grandchildren to consider, as that would be added to the list.

Hey Catherine! Yes all of those elements make up the criteria that we look for, as you say, ease of travel to the UK is important to us. We have had another question about the pension situation and it is on our list to work out the best way to manage that while out of the UK. Thanks for getting in touch. Best wishes Neil & Sarah

I still don't understand how someone can do this without any income coming in? Definitely sounds like quite an adventure!
@JayandSarah
@JayandSarah 5 месяцев назад
Well, if you don't have any income - you can only do it until you have burned through your savings. You don't need to have a "job" to have income. If you have lots of capital, your investment income becomes your "salary".
