MAE HONG SON (แม่ฮ่องสอน), THAILAND - When I was in Mae Hong Son, a province in Northwestern Thailand on the border of Myanmar, I had an honor to stay in a Shan Village (ไทใหญ่) called Muang Pon, at a homestay.
The house was a traditional 100 year old wooden house with a leaf roof. In this video I’m going to give you a full tour of the homestay in this amazing village, and we’ll learn a lot about the Shan culture.
It was quite cold when we visited (filmed in December), and it felt great to wear a jacket in the morning. There’s nothing better than waking up to the smoke of a fire, coffee, and hot rice congee porridge brewing. We had congee, fried local river fish, and the highlight for me - crispy fried local grown garlic. Amazing meal, and and incredible house.

Thanks for sharing Mark it must be a really beautiful experience. Some people cannot appreciate these traditional lifestyles and need make judgments about poverty etc. Especially people in the West. I hope these villages will maintain forever. They're invaluable 🙏

@@genokemp2433 Funny thing is, I was born in Thailand. My father worked for the WHO there. But we had to leave because people just weren't used to seeing people like us, and sometimes they would throw rocks at us just for the fun of it. Even though I was very young, I still remember. My mother was fed up with the situation and told my father if we didn't go back to our island, she'd divorce him. So we left.

What a wonderful piece. Let's give it up for the aunties!!! I got to stay at a Lisu village, a Hmong, and an Ankha. Long time ago. Plain Bic ballpoint pens and a suitcase full of bumper stickers were worth more than cash. Tuk-tuk drivers take you anywhere for a Top Gun sticker. The pens they use to make their tattoos.

That snack in banana leave you had with coffee is called Khao Poak (glutenous rice pounded with round sesame seed which is available only in Shan state). Missed it 😪. Thanks Mark. You are one of a kind presenter. Wish you could visit Keng Tung in Myanmar ( not at the moment though ).
