Turns out there was no AI or algorithms to detect what you picked up, they just had over 1000 people in India watching you through the cameras as you walked around the shop. It worked just like any other grocery store but they moved the cashiers to a third world country. Completely dystopian

In Sweden, maybe even all Scandinavian countries, you have the option to shop at a normal grocery store with a handheld scanner if you'd like. Just scan as you are putting stuff into your cart. At the end, there are dedicated lines for you to bag your stuff and insert the scanner into a machine to pay, no human interaction required.

i worked at an Amazon warehouse a year ago, cameras everywhere, you have to go through a metal detector when leaving the warehouse. They arrest at least 8 employees a month for theft and post it on a main wall. And they do track you by the second in the warehouse through RF technology, that's 3M square feet...

I work in a grocery store. Looks like it will only save on cashiers. They still need customer service guys, people to stock the shelves, and people to prepare the food like that kale wrap monstrosity.

As someone who's worked retail, I see several immediate problems. Ppl often pick things up, carry them around, then put them back - but not on the right shelf. I've also witnessed a kid take a bottle out of the cooler, take a drink, and then put it back on the shelf. You can't really test the latter ethically - maybe if you have a friend under a different account go in and pick it up after you put it down. It would definitely be interesting to see how the system would handle that scenario - ppl don't always check what they're buying to see if its been opened. You should have done an additional test where one of your crew entered under their Amazon account as well and you guys swapped items. Once by handing it to the other person and the other time by you placing it on a shelf in the wrong spot and them picking it up. For example, pick up the "nonharmless" coconut water and put it in the harmless coconut water spot. Then the other person come through and pick it up from the wrong location - then see who gets charged for what. That's something that happens in normal retail stores ALL the time. Question: do they have "age recommended" products there like video games and movies? Because it's not technically illegal for someone under 17 to buy an M rated game, but it's one of those things where it's typically enforced by the retailer - a policy the industry adopted in order to prevent age restriction laws being passed. So what's to prevent a 10 year old from using their parent's prime account to go in and buy a game that their parent might not want them to play? Sure, it would show up on the account and payment method, but most ppl don't really check that stuff very often in my experience. And your credit card statement will only say you spent $60 at Amazon (maybe Amazon Go). An inventive kid could easily come up with a number of things they purchased that sound reasonable. My brother certainly would have and I doubt my mother would have questioned it. Dad probably wouldn't have even thought to ask - he'd probably have assumed Mom sent my brother to the store to pick up some stuff.

Just in case anyone was wondering, it turns out 700/1000 purchases required up 1000 human contractors' intervention to look at the camera feeds.
