@@natepeterson7145 In my case I bought a Rigid pump and in those days it was lifetime warranty. Well the pump went bad in a year or two so I called them for a replacement. As it turns out you have to send it to them, which was costly and could take six weeks and no guarantee they would fix it, or if you can find a local Rigid repair center you can go there. Well I found a local place but they only do commercial/industrial repairs. So, it was one of those situations where sure they would warranty it but it was so costly and time consuming it was basically not really covered. I like Rigid stuff but I haven't had all good experiences with them.
Nobody is going to switch battery platforms because a competitor has 1 tool that is better…..but you have to start somewhere….slow and steady wins the race…and as Vince mentions competition forces motivation, which means the consumer wins
Good thing i have Ridgid tools/batteries already. I stay away from the black and yellow. Every jobsite I've worked at they supply us with Dewalt tools and well I've always been disappointed with their tools especially their batteries.
Well, this is the Dewalt Atomic model, not the standard XR model. The Atomic is not a fair representation of the Dewalt Recip Saw. The DCS382 20V MAX XR is the right comparison. I bet the DCS382 meets or beats the Ridgid.
I feel the opposite actually, if there's a tool that's what I need I don't care about getting different batteries and who cares if all your tools ain't the same color. If it's Makita Milwaukee DeWalt whatever, if the tool is best suited for me and the job I'm doing then that's what I buy. Lowe's was running a Craftsman clearance so I got a set and have to say I do grab them thinking it's the Milwaukee stuff trying to put the wrong battery on more than I'd like to admit but all chargers and batteries are in the same spot so only embarrassing and not to time consuming
@@mandoreforger6999 Did you cite the right model number? I can't find a DCS382 listed on Dewalt's website. However, of the current Dewalt offerings, there is only one 20V one-handed recip saw -- the one that they tested in the video. They do have other 20V recip saws, but none are one-handed.
Personally I prefer Rigid tools good to see them out perform DeWalt for a change, and as a plumber I'm looking forward to getting their right angle drill
I've been working my Rigid tools very hard for about 10 years and am very happy with them. Still have the Dewalt tools that have survived, but not adding too many yellow tools to the truck these days.
Yeah some guys are always breaking tools because they can't tell the difference between working a tool hard and catastrophically working a tool. Then they go out and bash the brand because of their own lack of common sense. I have mainly DeWalt tools. had some chucks wear out on some drills and some batteries crap out early(all warrantied). I use milwaukee 12 volt line as well pretty much the same story there. I still have every tool I ever bought that hasn't been stolen or sold still works. I am a private maintenance contractor

People might call Vince biased when it comes to Big Red, but those are the tools he loves. Everyone has a preference and a favorite brand. Some people live and die by Ryobi, Hercules, Rigid etc etc…I wouldn’t call it biased, I’d call it the truth. When you have an 18volt impact driver with 4,400 ipm that can blow 36 and 40 volt impacts out of the water, it is what it is brothers. Milwaukee doesn’t have to deceive anyone. There tools speak for they’re selves. The Flex is definitely a monster and Vince agreed to that. He gives all tools on all platforms credit when it’s do, so how can people call him biased?? Doesn’t make sense to me. Love the content as always my brother. Awesome video 💯🙏💪❤️
Because when you watch these videos you notice a pattern between influencers where they all do similar videos using similar language because they are paid to do that. Really any influencer should have to disclose when they are paid to do videos and by who. You should know when your watching a commercial lol
I always felt Ridgid was built using 2 - 3 year old Milwaukee internals. But I’d say the Milwaukee wins pretty much every time. They are the flagship of TTI, whereas Ridgid is their mid level. Theres no point in having mid and top level tools if your mid is beating your top.
I own the dewalt atomic saw and I thought it was a good tool until I saw it up against other recip saws lol but you're exactly right vince. As a plumber I absolutely love how small dewalts is
I definitely agree with comment about the vacuum…. My Dewalt vacuum lacks suction power. You think Dewalt would try to make a worthy cordless vacuum…..
I own the DeWalt one hander, bought and returned the Kobskt one hander and have used the Milwaukee m12 & m18 one handers many times. In my opinion, while the Kobalt and Milwaukee units all cut faster, especially through wood, I will take the DeWalt all day. I didn't buy it to cut 2x12s or 4x4s.... As a landscaper, I bought it for pruning and irrigation and it's absolutely amazing for that. I also routinely break down pallets with it. The vibration is the best I've ever experienced in ANY recip saw, it's relatively quiet, it's light weight and compact. After using it for about 2 years, I don't want a saw that's any heavier. Frankly, I've been curious to see the Metabo HPT one hander run with the DeWalt. That said, the Ridgid looks very impressive here. It doesn't look much bigger, and I haven't used it or felt the weight, but if it's close to the DeWalt in weight and vibration reduction, it seems like a keeper.
Well you pick the tool for the job and like other commenters stated the DeWalt one handed saw is made for finer work and grab the next one up for cutting through 2X10s. Started out 18yrs ago with Ridgid but switch to DeWalt because they made a much larger line of tools to allow me to stay in one battery platform and get the jobs done for my work and could also use their OPE for my home lawn care. Milwaukee and DeWalt definitely seem to have the trades covered. Ridgid does make good tools. My stuff from 18yrs ago still work fine. Good video Vince to resolve the argument of the knot but all in all if comes down to the tool for the job. I think DeWalt is also doing a great job on giving people what they want ....smaller tools with smaller batteries .....don't want to carry heavy tools especially when we get older
You nailed it at 10:07 ! When I buy a compact recip saw I am buying it to get into tight areas and could care less about stroke length. For me the smaller the better and of course lighter because I can get into tighter areas without fatigue and even if it cuts slower chances are if I am using this type of saw it is only for a few cuts. If i wanted something powerful i would just be using my regular full size.
The longer stroke length helps to clear the gullet of the teeth, shorter stroke leaves blade buried in the wood with no place for the chips/sawdust to exit the cut. The added mass actually helps dampen the vibration as well.
if the specs are to be believed the Ridgid gets about 233 fpm of sawing (7/8" x3200 strokes/min) vs Dewalt's 146 fpm (5/8" x 2800 strokes/min). That equates to about 60% faster speed. Oddly enough that's about what the testing showed (when using the 5AH pack). When the larger powerstack packs come out it will start getting interesting.

I like Rigid and Dewalt. To me they both have pros and cons. I have had the 12v Rigid impact/driver set for years and recently bought a Makita 12v set and just wasn’t impressed. Not near the power or battery longevity as the Rigid. I ended up upgrading to the Rigid 18v line. I debated for a while between the Rigid or Dewalt, but I guess the lifetime service agreement was the selling point.
It was mainly extreme portability and price point that I tried the Makita 12v set. I’m with you 18v definitely way to go, the tool manufacturers have come a long way on all the sub compact offerings.
I really like your videos, as someone going from full time cooking to joining the construction/remodeling trade I greatly appreciate your no nonsense reviews and tips.
@@TheRealGOTdurrrred that's great and all but from what my uncle told me ridigd keeps your tools/batteries for months. He even set back his schedule a month thinking he would get it back in time. He ended up having to buy another palm router to start/finish a cabinetry job. At least he has a back up now lol.
@@ChickenJoe24 I’ve got loads of ridgid tools, I’ve only had to warranty one (fell off a roof and the battery wouldn’t stay locked in) and I simply went to Home Depot, turned it in and they gave me one off the shelf. 3yr old tool which had been replaced by a newer model so I got a free upgrade. Went home with it that day.
Nick was a good fit with this channel. I think Vince said in one video that he’s onto other things however I’m not 100% sure. Watching back videos a couple years ago compared to the last few Nick was in, he seemed to be way more toned down. Iv always wondered if there was something significant about that. When watching tool reviews I still to this day hear in my head “KITA baby!” Hopefully one day he will make a return of at least an appearance.
I have the Atomic recip, and love how how compact it is; it fits in the bag with my drill/driver set. That said, it's not a speed machine and it didn't suprise me that the Rigid won.
As a former plumber I’ve used both dewalt Mikita and Milwaukee. And from my experience. The dewalts speed at reciprocating is significantly slower compared to the Milwaukee or Mikita. I was able to make straighter smoother cuts with the Milwaukee vs the dewalt. At least that was my experience. I used both hack saw and saw zall from both brands. It also feels like the Milwaukee it more tight in the reciprocations than the dewalt. Let me know if anyone else has noticed that. Thanks for the awesome content Vince!!
Quite a few years back my neighbor who works construction for a living bought some rigid tools. Sense then he sold ALL of his dewalt and has countless ridged tools . I have used them myself so many times on projects as we often work on together and up to this point it's all I will buy also. I am curious to see how this new flex performs compared to them but really have no plans on switching. Even their warranty is great .especially the batteries.
It's a fair test. What you have to consider is the market for these tools. The DeWalt atomic is akin to Ridgid subcompact line. 12-14v size and power on a 18v platform yes I know they call it 20v max but that's fully charged any 18v platform is 20v when fully charged. Put load on the tool and that drops to a steady 18v in use. And what I read online the atomic is home depot's answer to Lowe's DeWalt Xtreme 12v line of tools. Because home Depot cried a hissy fit when Lowe's got the deal to be the exclusive retailer at least in the us for dewalts 12v line. So home Depot got the atomic line. Marginally better specs than 12v but on a battery platform everyone already has.
If you want to go back to this after a year, I would like to see any top recip saw against the FLEX. I have the traditional recip and it is strait up beastly for demo work, but it is almost impossible to use 1-handed. I saw that they have a model similar to the ones you tested, but I'm not sure if it would be worth adding to my arsinal.
I think a lot of it comes down to choice. I inherited some old ridgid tools so I kept on that track because of battery back compatibility. Would I choose them if I hadn't had those, don't know.
I have the Octane recip and it’s a great saw. I also have the super sawzall. Not that much faster and part of the speed could be the weight. Ridgid does make some good stuff.
Good to see Rigid absolutely destroy Dewalt in this test. I switched from yellow to Orange some years ago, and I’m glad. It started with a corded reciprocal saw, which has been fantastic for about 15 years. Then it was there cordless wet/dry vac that I used daily on the job. It was top rated, and the suction power is incredible. The only down side was when Rigid gave up on the Octane battery line, and my battery quit after a year. Since I’m already in the battery platform, I’m now looking at their cordless 3/8 ratchet.

The atomic is meant to compete with the M12fuel sawzall in size without the user having to go with another battery style. As stated the smaller size is good for tight areas. Sure they could add a bigger motor and a longer stroke, but at that point.. it might as well be full sized.
The longer stroke length might be beneficial for cutting wood, but what about wood with nails and/or pipes of varying material & thickness. The shorter stroke of the dewalt might be better overall. What about run time? Does the longer stroke length of the rigid make it such that it has a shorter run time? Multiple factors need to be concluded before one can say one is better over the other. You even said that size might be a factor too already.
I say you test all new Rigid tools against new Dewalt, Mikata, & Milwaukee tools! As well as anything else you want! I Love comparing them to the best, you just can’t beat there price for the warranty alone, & there performance isn’t that bad either!
I got your point now, size/stroke time/stroke length are different. Compact tool is supposed to be force on compare size, not on power. I would not which is no good, or just let viewers to see both spec. and power then let viewers decide which side they are looking at. ( $/size/power)
interesting video. One thing you might have considered was the impact of the weight of the heavier saw on cutting speed. To be fair, "equalizing" the weight of the two saws would have given you a fairer comparison.
Ridgid wanted a power tool line but doesn’t make any. So the contracted TTI to do so. TTI rebranded AEG and kept AEG colors with Rigid name. Rigid hand tools are Red Rigid ( corporate colors ) rigid power tools are Orange ( TTI corporate division colors Milwaukee is red )
@@Bob-gy6ud ya I figured they didn't have much to do with the good old line of pipe tools. Guess just because there made by tti doesn't mean they have to fit in a hierarchy of products. Thanks for the info.
Please do this again with more weight. Most people use more then what looks like 5-10lb of weight behind their saw. Increased stroke length and rpm helps, but in the end torque can make all the difference.
Ridgid crew!!! In the trades and let me tel you I get crap daily for using ridgid tools. Once a journeyman of mine said “those tools are for home use, not here at work” I laughed and said “you may think they are but they’re fixing all of your mistakes. My foreman almost had a heart attack from laughing at him. Ridgid for life man.
so one of my co-workers runs rigid and its funny because he's gone through 8 drill drivers in a year and still uses there tools and just recently bought one of these compact recip saws. he had me use it and I have to admit I like the handling a lot better than my atomic 20v compact recip. I think the dewalt would be a lot better if it had more strokes I honestly wish more tool manufactures would have like a couple variations of the tools or even somehow miraculously make an adjustable stroke length. still prefer dewalt 😁
I could see the benefit of the shorter stroke if you're working in a tight spot. The tools with the shorter stroke are typically targeted at plumbers, electricians etc. I have an older Ridgid Fuego 120 volt one-handed saw that has maybe a 1/2" stroke. It's really good for the type of things that you're going to be wanting to cut one-handed. One thing it's terrible at is sheet metal cutting. My assumption is because it changes direction more often than any of my other recip saws.
I choose RIDGID because their battery tools are a good bang for the buck.. but mainly for their LSA agreement. Having all my tools/batteries warranted for life is a good feeling.. and swapping out a dead battery at Home Depot is easy enough.
For some applications, shorter stroke length actually makes the tool easier to control accurately through the cut. So, even though it's a slower cut, a more accurate cut can be advantageous. Then again, when you want to get the job done and done now....the faster tool is the better tool.
I like and own many RIDGID tools but did notice the knots in the board and thought about the unfairness of "that" test. I have the Octane one-handed recipe saw and I don't like it and it's ¾" stroke. I assume they've upgraded since but I don't know however I do like the Milwaukee the best.
I would like to see Rigid vs Milwaukee M12 fuel and M18 fuel one handed saws. That test you did on the two handed saw still comes to mind, even with slightly.better specs on paper, the rigid lost to the super Sawzall.
I was going to get compact bandsaw from Ridgid but the reviews are bad on reliability vs makita and the lifetime service agreement process is slow from what I hear have to wait weeks so couldn’t go with them even though I wanted to
The Ridged against the Ryobi offering would be interesting, since Ryobi is trying to step up their brand and gain a broader appeal to pros/contractors.
Would be interesting to see. In theory the Ryobi should still be a tad behind in some way since they are both made by TTi and they seem to stagger by price point per performance. So low, med, high would be Ryobi, Ridigid, Milwaukee.
Dewalt makes outstanding miter saws but honestly I think DeWalt makes the worst “contractor grade” cordless tools. Not to mention Dewalt batteries are probably the worst bang for the buck to Ah size.
Agree for the most part. Pretty much anything yellow that has a cord and says dewalt is top notch. Great miter saws, contractor table saws, and their thickness planers are amazing. But their 20v (18v) are hit and miss.
DeWalt batteries are cheaper than Makita and Milwaukee typically, all depends how you are buying them. When you see a deal you stock up. Every brand had it's hits and misses, the original 1 key Milwaukee drill had the worst chuck ever made, etc. I have a large collection of DeWalt 20v and 12v, there are winners and a couple that are underwhelming. Flexvolt advantage/power detect drills are beasts, yes the 887 was outdated but never let me down. The new 850 is great as well. I don't like the original XR and Compact sawzall but the flexvolt advantage saw is a lot better. The router and jigsaw are great, nothing wrong with the XR grinder, drywall cutout and screwgun are fine, etc. I have a sizable investment in DeWalt and Makita, neither have let me down, and I'm sure a few tools could be improved but that's the same for everyone. The new 12v extreme stuff has been very good as well, but I will say they were late to the game.
The word on the street about Ridgid is a few years ago some of their Octane tools were just as powerful (even some more powerful, i.e. impact wrenches) then Milwaukee, but once the TTI executives caught wind about it they basically give Ridgid a slap on the wrist and said you can't do that. Milwaukee is supposed to be the top-tier brand. So they made Ridgid detune their tools and build less powerful models. Since then Ryobi has stepped up with their new One+ HP line to which I would say Ridgid and Ryobi are almost equals now. The problem for Ridgid is Ryobi has the largest 18V line of tools in the industry.
The reason the test is deceptive is because it's not a true apple's to apple's. 5/8" stroke is for finer applications. If they want a proper head to head they should test it against the M18 hackzal because it also has 7/8" stroke with 3000 rpms. We know they won't do that though because TTI is obviously the parent company of both rigid and milwaukee so they don't want to take from their own sales.
I also thought that it was weird that they said they had the first brushless left handed saw and the most compact and economical right angle drill when dewalt and makita both have left handed brushless for years now and the m12 right angle is more compact and costs less than the rigid.
You’re not going to use a recip saw for “fine” applications you’d use a jigsaw. That being said rpm and stroke per min don’t cause the jumping as much as the tooth pattern on a blade. Ever look at a finish blade on a circular saw vs a framing blade or demo blade. TPI defines finish work not blade speed otherwise miter saws would only had 450rpm
@@Bob-gy6ud Actually yes, a 5/8" stroke is perfect when you're replacing fascia boards and you can't get at the nail that's up close to the drip edge without damaging like you would when you have a bigger stroke because it keeps bouncing off of the nail and you can't start the cut. 1/4" might not sound like much but it's make or break I'm some applications. No one is using this hackzal for demoing an entire house. Not many people are reaching for a jigsaw to replace a hackzal in certain applications, they'd reach for a multi tool. I have 6 sawzalls, 5 multi tools, 3 jigsaws, 10 skilsaws, 11 miter saws, and 6 grinders, so ya, I've looked at and purchased hundreds, if not thousands of blades for every single material you can possibly think of cutting. I should own stocks in diablo I buy so many blades.
While I don't think it would have a big outcome on the test, you mentioned that orange was heavier than yellow, maybe put enough weight on the yellow so that they are both the same weight. Of course, would love to see the test against Milwaukee.
@@chillstep4life I work doing new construction plumbing and have the dewalt atomic Sawzall and my brother has the milwaukee hackzall. He frequently wants to use mine when cutting up 2x's for blocking and we have both noticed it takes his longer to cut lengths of pvc
Sure the stroke help for faster cutting, that remember me that one day with a friend who have the red fuel one on 12v we test it again my 15 amp 1 in 1/4 stroke makita and long story short I made about ten cut in the time he made one in a 3in steel square tube with 1/4 inch wall but every tool for every job
