My husband and father-in-law ran a roadside assistance service, including lockouts. The bag is by far the most common way they got into cars, worked on pretty much everything except a Mercedes G-Wagon (the doors are too strong to wedge out). Most modern cars have shielding to prevent the use of a slim jim. And the coat-hanger looking thing can be very effective for lever lock style doors.

Go to be careful using the bag as it can bend the top of the door frame. I got locked out and a road side assistance used a couple of airbags and a hook to retrieve the keys from inside.... I was just going to break a rear quarter window. Anyhow, this was on the passenger side of the car. My then girlfriend and I were out driving and it started to rain... the water started leaking in through the top of the passenger door. I realised the top of the door frame has been bent out of shape a bit. ... to fix it means winding down the window and trying to spring in the top of the door frame a bit.

I had to help a coworker break into their car the other night during lunch at work (night shift at an automotive factory). His carabiner broke and he didn’t notice his keys fell off onto the seat. @@milesofsky Several years back I went into burger king only to come out and realize my keys were on my seat. Both my parents were at work so I wasn't able to call them, and even if I did my car only had the one key, lol. Since my car was an older car that didn't lock the trunk I put my food on the ground and crawled through and was able to unlock my car. But of course a lady was watching me and called the cops telling them some lady was trying to steal a car. lol It was really funny to show the police my license and tell them how I locked myself out of my own car. Everyone got a good laugh and the poor lady kept apologizing. After that I got a second key.

It'll always be an awkward conversation when you have to explain to someone why you're breaking into a car, because if they don't know you, they'll obviously think you're stealing it, but if they do know you, they'll think you're stupid for having locked yourself out or they'll make fun of you for a little while while they help you out

The trick to the Slim Jim is knowing where and what angle to put it. I've only done a few, all my own cars... Because I am REALLY bad about leaving keys in my car. Older cars are easier. Some newer cars have shields to block you also. The kits usually come with a guide to show you tips. Also, I've seen a lot of lock outs working downtown. An inexperienced slim Jim user can do some damage. Don't get too rough or you'll be taking the door apart to replace plastic pieces.

Both times I've used a slim jim were on older Fords (my own 88 Tempo and a friend's 98? Ranger) and they both required me to push something down rather than pull something up. My first time looked a lot like the video here - I could make it wiggle, but I couldn't make it unlock. Until I accidentally pushed the rod down while trying to start over and it just popped open. I think I invented some new cursewords at that point. Both times were also in busy parking lots in broad daylight, and everyone just completely ignored the weirdo with the slim jim.

But once I show them how locks work and demystify the thing, people usually have a lot of fun. And every single person I've worked with has been able to get at least one lock open. As a tow truck driver/roadside assistance person, the wedge, bag and reach tool combo is my go to for every lock out. In more modern cars hitting the unlock button tends not to work, so a few methods: Going for the lock stem and placing force between it and the glass to pull it up. Going for the inner door handle and pulling the outer at the same time With the cabriolet, you could also use the reach to roll the window down via the manual window handle. Popping the trunk with an available button near the kick panel, floor, etc and putting the rear seats down And in some cases on these techniques when the drivers side doesn’t work, the passenger side will. Not sure why, but it does. If the keys are in the car you can also push the unlock on the fob with the reach tool, or pull them through the gap you make with the airbag. My record for getting into a car is 4 seconds. 😂

I've found some interesting anti theft on my truck (2018 Ram). If the truck was locked and my window down... I've reached in the window to push the unlock button (not even trying to test anything, I had set my keys in the console while working on the property). The door opened right up, and the panic alarm went off. My truck does not have an alarm package upgrade or anything. So the alarm/panic function goes nuts. Could only stop the horn and flashing lights with the remote. So... I guess my truck has an alarm. Funny how they tried to upsell me on a car alarm

I've had to get into a car while camping with a coat hanger made into a straight stick and some dental floss tied to the end as a lasso. Used a few wood shims to wedge the door like the air bag does. Once you lasso the pull stick (doesn't work so good on the rectangle pull locks), spin the hanger to tighten the floss on the pull stick. Then give er a tug. Works like a charm.

@amzarnacht6710
@amzarnacht6710 Год назад
@@DaveDefrane602 If it's a round stick-type there's usually a flare at the top. Once you get the string around the shaft and tighten it you can tug the lock up. If it's a rectangle shape there is no lip so you would need a different approach, but a shoelace might still work if more complicated and frustrating. Loop it over the rectangle part and pull firmly toward the rear of the vehicle and ease it up - and fail multiple times before success. Coat hangers are just too flimsy to work any modern flip-locks without an excess of skill and/or fumbling. Some vehicles will open with a pull on the door handle but many will not. And no one is going to do squat to a modern toyota/lexus with a basic theft deterrent system using a coat hangar... those are the most annoying cars to perform a lockout service on.

Get your start at AAA and move on to either a private company or one of the smaller chains. We no longer work for AAA because they started screwing over our company and we were barely making any money off of their calls. If you want to make money as an automotive locksmith, go towards programming and generating keys. It's easy to undercut the dealership on price especially if you can drive to their vehicle. Most dealers require the customer to tow the car to them, so it saves the customer quite a bit to call you out. It requires some significant buy-in for the programming equipment, but it is well worth it in the long run. It's a regular $250+ job that can be done in around an hour if you're proficient at it.

I used to work in vehicle repossession. I wasn't responsible for yoinking the cars that werent being paid for, but part of my job was getting them open after they came back to the shop. While I used a lot of the stuff they used here it is worth noting that no tool is one size fits all, and that most cars built after about 2010 can detect when theyre being opened in a weird way and still set off the alarm anyway. You can only really "silently" break into older cars. Air bladders dont work for vehicles without a full frame around the window. It has to have two hard surfaces to press against to make the gap, and if the window doesnt have a frame the window will just shatter in the process. At that point you wouldve been better off just picking up a nice rock.
