I had to be the singer in my 2nd. band when I was 19. I said " I'm not singing unless I have a guitr to hide behind." Next day our keyboard player says " Hey Terry, I've got a guitar for you." It was an original 61 SG Les Paul Jr. Gee, I couldn't believe the myriad of sounds from that on P-90 pickup.

ROCK MACHINE!! The p90 sounds insane! 8k is pretty hot for a p90 still.
@GCKelloch
@GCKelloch 4 месяца назад
8k (of 42AWG) is actually a bit low for a bridge P90.
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo 4 месяца назад
Yeah, this measures right at 8k. I think the proximity, combined with the fact the guitar is acoustically loud and bright, gives it plenty of output.
@GCKelloch

@@CarolineGuitarCo Maybe the magnet is C8? BTW, the more whatever is attached to a string resonates, the less energy is left in the string to be sensed by a pickup. FI, a jazz box will have lower electrical output than a solid body guitar with the same pickup. It's also why the action on a jazz box can be set so low. The string vibrations lose more energy quickly, so they don't buzz against the frets at the same height.

I love weird 70's Gibson guitars so much, they're always so strange and akward looking but I just can't help but love them!

That's one interesting fiddle! Kind of gives off "prototype" vibes a la the Snakehead Tele prototype!

I’ve always had a soft spot for these since a teenage bandmate bought one in walnut brown new in around ‘72. Thick chamfered slab SG body, no neck angle (so the neck sits high against the body), pretty weak logo-embossed single coil melody maker” pickup but a huge neck with a fantastic action. On the downside, typical early 70’s “paddle” headstock.

sick. i love my 2011 60s tribute but i wouldnt mind the fatter body. and the slightly lighter paint color on that 71 is really nice too.

Nice had a rear routed 71 deluxe for years with the straight neck angle. It’s a little different but still awesome doesn’t feel as fragile as the older style ones

It reminds me of the thick bodied bolt-on neck SG's that came out of Japan in the 1970's.
@kurtbader9711
@kurtbader9711 4 месяца назад
They're so thick because they're made out of poplar. Needs that huge neck joint for stability. Nice tones, but don't expect a shredder. Have to admit it's pretty!

correct, it's like a curious Schaller harmonica attached to a vibrola tailpiece without the bar.

As a kid, I bought an SG-1 that was very similar, in 1976, in Nashville, TN, It was a 1970 model, I think. I modded it in 1977-78 to have one DiMarzio SuperDistortion pickup, and one DiMarzio PAF, two tones and two volumes, like an SG Standard. It had the biggest, fattest neck I ever played on any Gibson electric. It was like a big old Gibson acoustic guitar neck! Sold it to a friend when I got married and needed money for the ring.

Around 1985 I bought a Gibson SG-200. It was tobacco brown, or walnut, or whatever they called it in the 70s. It had 2 single coil pickups with metal mounting rings and black covers with the Gibson script logo. Panel switches for pickup selection. I paid $285 for it. I wish I still had that guitar.

That's cool. I always want a slightly thicker SG : it would counter the neck dive, as well as add back some of that tone wood lost in the crash diet the Les Paul went thru to become the SG. I see that with the Phil X Framus XG , when he was with them (it's also neck thru, and the neck" joins"the body further down the neck). Do you find it counters the dive, and replenishes some of that Rich, LP-esque sustain...??
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo 4 месяца назад
I've rocked mine with a Couch car vinyl strap for years and between the strap, the weight, and balance, I don't get neck dive at all.
@sohosteveuk
@sohosteveuk 4 месяца назад
I'm pretty sure that P90 is a later addition as a pal of mine had one of these and it came with a truly useless low output single coil pickup with 'Gibson' moulded into the plastic cover that looked more like it had come from Fender than Gibson
@CarolineGuitarCo
@CarolineGuitarCo 4 месяца назад
That's addressed in the video. These are different models based on the pickup configuration. You can read more about it here: solidguitar.fandom.com/wiki/SG_100_/_200_/_250#SG-100_Junior_(1972)

@CarolineGuitarCo

The sound is pretty similar to a SG Jr. due to the single P-90, but the body shape and balance feel different because of the different thickness and neck joint angle.

My first electric guitar was an SG-200, from that era. $150 in about 1981. It took me decades to figure out what it was, with the Internet's help. I still have it but after some poorly-thought-out mod attempts it's not in good shape.

The volute does NOT protect the headstock. If it did, they wouldn't have gotten rid of it. They THOUGHT it would protect the headstock.....but in reality.....it causes perpendicular breaks.....which are FAR worse than regular breaks. Thus.....the normal neck came back.
