As a Texas gulf coast surfer, I always steered clear of the surf casters. I knew it'd be sharky when they were slinging large bait. This was a nice flat and glassy day obviously. That red was huge! I know you can keep one a day over 26" but it was awesome seeing ya'll set that old man back to sea.

I love the attitude and caring these guys show as well. Also worth noting, red drum over 28 inches in Texas waters must be released unless it's a tag year and they have a special red drum license. Most states have similar regulations. Typically, they could not have legally kept that fish, and seeing how they operate, I'm thinking they wouldn't have wanted to anyway.

My Dad loved fishing. He was a heart patient so fishing became his life. He liked deep sea fishing and had a good amount of deep sea tackle. So when my folks moved back home to Okla., he liked going to the river to Spoon bill fish. First year he used his ocean tackle and was catching his limit. And people had never seen a set up like his. After a couple of years just about all were fishing for the spoonbills like him. Got my love of fishing from him.🐟👍

Well, it’s not much but if you watch in the early part of the video, when they’re setting up, you will see an axe being misused as a hammer to drive in the rod holder pipes. Using the axe sideways is considered incorrect by BSA standards and if it had a wooden handle it could have broken. Leaving them to look for something else to drive the other pole pipes. I know it’s their own too and they can do what they want. Just saying if you wanted to find something to dislike about the video that might be one. Thanks 😊

Next time here's some pro tips from an experienced beach angler. DO NOT HANDLE RAYS. Cut the leader as close to the mouth as you can and let them go. These are very dangerous and can ruin your day. The hooks will rust out. They are durable. And don't try to remove the hooks from sharks either. Just cut the leader as close to the hook as you can, get it back in the water ASAP, and let the hook rust out of the animal over the next few weeks. Wrenching and twisting the animal does much more damage and can actually cause a fatal injury. Sharks are tough as hell. Just cut the leader and let them go on.

When I was a kid, the late 60s, in fla., my dad and I would fish off the coast. But we waded in up to our waists. My dad had a string of red fish on his belt. It was floating out behind him in the water. He had maybe 4 or 5 or the stringer. He felt the stringer jerk. Just thought it was the fish. It jerked again, harder. He turned around a looked. It was a 5 ft shark, eating it's way up the stringer! That day, my dad and Jesus Christ were the only 2 to walk on water! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I once was shore fishing a lake as a kid. I had a stringer full of fat Blue Gills tied to a stump on the bank. I noticed the stringer swishing around, but the fish had been moving earlier a bit. It appeared really animated, so I pulled it. It pulled back . I dragged a large snapping turtle out the lake, the bastard had eaten one blue gill up to the head and taken a massive bite out another.

I once caught a small 18" ray in my crabbing net lol. It slid off the top (made a nice little lid for it, kept my crabs in, lol) before I could bring it in, but that was for the better anyway. @@rubyfirefly2582 Gotta agree with that. I'm not sure how sensitive a fish is, but having a big hook in your mouth or jaw or gill and having to pull against it can't be a good experience. @@lethalweaboo8662 Not so much a different family than a different class. Sharks and rays are in the class chondrichthyes while "fish" are in the class osteyichtyes. Family division comes later on down the phylogeny tree.

Beautiful video. Beautiful catches. Absolutely awesome! Have you considered using a bait canon? It would save a lot of time paddling the kayak out and spend more time fishing. Just a thought. Enjoy your videos either way.

That's a once in a lifetime redfish! Well done! 👍 Years ago I read Frank Sargeant's book called "The Redfish Book" and in it was a photo of David Dueul's world record 94 lb. 2 oz. redfish and I was in awe of just how massive a red can get. He caught that monster from the beach just like you did your fish.

@hdctx

Fairly easy to estimate weight based in length, and a bit less stressful for the fish than the added time of weighing it. Bull reds are all catch and release on the Texas coast.

Wow this really triggered my nostalgia! I grew up in San Antonio but my mom was obsessed with the ocean, so we always found an excuse for her to take off work and book me and my sisters to corpus christi every chance she could get, and as a kid I hated it because of all the jellyfish and the haze and the gritty sand, and being scared that I was going to see someone get eaten by a shark, but as an adult watching her in failing health I got misty as soon as I recognized that texas coast because it will always be the happiest I ever saw my mother. Love y'all's videos, the catch and release is a beautiful energy. Take care everyone.

26.2% of catch + release fish die. It all depends on the species + the way they are caught then handled. Let's hope this beautiful creature made it.

That fish looked half dead when they “released” it. It was almost going belly up. Pretty sure it had some brain damage at least from lack of water for so long.
