I have a problem committing to a church. I had an interesting child hood with churches. I finally committed to a church and was going faithfully for 3 years straight. Until our pastor went to jail. Over 5 women got courage and fessed up what he did to them. Me and my family immediately left and and had a hard time finding another church. We have been going to my church now faithfully along with other really great family friends and I am very happy to say that as of today is will be baptized in 5 days!

I consider myself as a pretty religious person. Every time I reach out to someone in my church for help I’m told “well if you weren’t gay this wouldn’t have happened”. “The tattoos and piercings is what’s taking you away from God”. “You only need a man in your life and all your problems will be fixed”. I relate to the second verse so incredibly much I cried the first time I heard this song.

I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ and my pastor found out then told my parents to “fix me” or we’ll be kicked out of church. And he talks crap about me.. And my parents didn’t bother to tell me or give me info on why I shouldn’t be bisexual I had to find out from my brother and his wife. It hurts me so much to know that the adults that I’m supposed to trust is like that.

@@kayleeconrad8699 you can stop “hidden” things by putting preventative measures in. there’s no way for someone not to know that these things happen, and the dangerous and very real chances it could happen near you. it’s all over the news, constantly. happening everywhere. background checks in order to become leaders or teachers in the church, not allowing children to be alone with these adults without a parent or other guardian present. this isn’t such an impossible situation to solve, there’s a million things that can be done and already are done in non-church institutions.

I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who who was fully God, fully man & died for my sins as well as yours then was resurrected by the Holy Spirit three days later…. I feel you though. I was never CSA'd by anyone in a church (or of the church, I was CSA'd in a different way by someone else--in my own family no less), but this song feels very much like my own viewpoint, especially with the bit about "I sat through the sermons / To hear them say my friends would go to Hell / But if that's sinning / Then send me straight to Hell as well", when I deconverted from Christianity 7 years ago, despite being raised in it. My reasoning being I can't stand organized religion and the harm it has done, and combined with my own experiences with hypocrisy in the church, I no longer wanted to be part of, believe in, an ideology that preaches hatred and abuses the vulnerable. I'm agnostic now. I don't care if there's a god or not, I just know that the one I believed in is a false one that people use as an excuse to hurt others.

My religious trauma came from moving to a small Christian town and being pressured to convert. My family wasn’t really involved ever and when we moved, being Hispanic already made us outcasts that they didn’t like- but not being Christian?? Forget it. So we decided to just try it out. I went to Christian school bc it was one of the only schools in town and the other was in a bad area of town. The first thing anyone would ask us is “what church do you go to” with an accusatory tone. Trying to “catch” us. The second question would be “where are you from” laced with the slightest bit of disgust. At school, I met the most abhorrent human beings I’d ever encountered. All calling themselves Christian. All were better than me for being Christian. And that was the only criteria that mattered. I let myself be manipulated because I wanted to be liked. I let my teachers warp my ideas, my peers influence my actions, my church dictate my feelings. And when I felt terrible about myself, when I stopped thinking for myself and felt myself caving to the bigotry- I woke up. I realized how hollow I became. I started questioning the teachers who told me to stay in abusive relationships and submit to your husbands bc divorce is a sin, I refused to let them make me hate those who were different from me. I stood up against their hypocrisy. And it got me cast out, some teachers began to target me, church leaders began guilting me for questioning the religion instead of just answering my questions. And I finally left. I’ve been clean from religion for almost 8 years now and I’ve never been happier.

I saw the raw and pure hatred in that institution and I would never go back. I believe there are some good people who call themselves Christian’s, I am friends with many of them. But they have their own relationship with their god that is personal and private. And they love, harder than most. And I LOVE them for that. But the vast majority of “Christian’s” or religious individuals in general are terrible people that praise their god out loud for everyone to see, in an attempt to make others feel bad or just using it as an excuse to be mean and hateful towards people they just don’t like. Something Jesus very clearly told his followers not to do.

Not to mention, it isn’t just Catholic Church leaders who are predators. Christian church leaders are too, just sneakier I’d say. There were many men who were leaders of a church and made grossly inappropriate comments to girls. And because our coaches/teachers/counselors/neighbors were all part of the same institution- you had no escape. I’m thankful I didn’t experience worse, but I know others weren’t as lucky. And yet we still allow these institutions to remain untaxed and unregulated. Seems a shame. Especially when their mission is to serve and help and love and those aren’t even in their top 10 list of shit to do.

Hello thank you for sharing your raw experience. The church is suppose to be a community where it is safe but it is not where it is guaranteed to have God's presence. Everyone is not perfect. Everyone sins. We can tell a white lie without batting our eyes. We can twist words to sound perfect to own cause but at the end of the day, God is the one who will find you who chose you and for what purpose I dont know I just know that it was and is still is human sin that eradicates the presence of what a church stands for and that is God pleasing. It is not a place of gossip. It is not a place of fornication. It is not a place of adultery etc. It is a place where goodness is suppose to rest. Where Gods presence is suppose to be perceived strongly but a lot failed to their calling from God to be the shepherd here on earth to lead lost sheeps in the dark who are confused broken and alone to feel at peace with God because God is suppose to take care of all of us. Broken as we are. Wretched as we are. We are not pure. Im sure we have hated others for a little thing and judged others harshly without cause and being jealous. But God forgives us and ask us to turn away from those bad things and find goodness and be good because God is good. He is love and he is justice.

This song is deep. My own dad grabbed me in my butt and my chest when I was 14 and Im now 15. He has did the grabbing for a while even when I was little. He would even sit me on his lap and do weird things to me. My aunts would have to come grab me from him. And once I spoke up and said something I got made out to be a liar because my dad said I was a liar and he doesn't wanna be in my life until I apologize. But I dont need to because you did that too me. He even made me write a three page essay and he was gonna make me read it in front of my whole school. I went to my moms for a weekend and I showed her the papers, she was so mad she ripped them up. I got diagnosed with ptsd and what my dad did to me probably plays a big role in that. And the worst part about it is he was on drugs when he did all of this too me. So sadly he just makes me out to be a liar. Im just glad I dont see him anymore he has caused enough tramua in my life. And I have his last name and Im definitely changing it when I get older because I dont wanna carry that with me knowing what kind of person he is....

This means you have stress from things that trigger you from the past , like certain events can happen that can remind you of trauma from the past, and it causes stress. I'm not surprised I have it because I've been abused, touched, and my childhood was very traumatizing it wasn't pleasant, sadly.

When I was 10 years old my pastor did things to me like yell at me and punish me and when I tried to tell my mom she did nothing so I went to my dad and he did something like yell and call him out and then we never showed up to church again I'm 16 now

Cousin cousin please I’m only 7 you’re 16! And I didn’t believe that you were just waking me up! Listen listen listen I swear this won’t take long. If you think this is right then I’m fine with being wrong. When I was 7 and my cousin was 16 we had a situation. My whole family was spending Easter at our lake house. I was sleeping with my great grandma who was deaf. I woke up at about 8:00 am to someone tickling my 🐱. I look up and I see my cousin reaching his hand under my nightgown and well you get the idea. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Waking you up.” He said, and then walked away. I turned at my great grandma who was still asleep. I told her what happened to try and wake her up, but her hearing aids weren’t in so she didn’t hear me. I later told my mom who told my aunt. I was also mad at my mom because all she said was “he probably didn’t know you were wearing a nightgown” like that makes up for the stuff he did to me. Either my cousin was embarrassed or mad or ashamed because later that day he ran away. We found him and he claimed he was “mushroom hunting”. He had to go to a place to learn about his bio mom (he’s adopted) and I still don’t know much about where he went because that’s all my mom told me since I was 7 (possibly mental facility? We didn’t see him much for about a year). I felt guilty for a while until I realized it was his fault. Now he’s and adult and I’m a teenager and we’re on much better terms. He’s very nice to me now but I can still feel the tension.

sitting across from a 60 something year old church leader in a court room, as a nine year old being asked “what were you wearing” because he did some nasty shit. the church still kept him afterwards, nothing happened aside from me being humiliated and shamed.

See I’m Christian, but man ppl have made churches so weird even culty sometimes. I don’t go to church or any thing like that, I just believe in Jesus and god. That’s all that makes me Christian. I have no desire for going to church just to be judged by a group of old hags or these creepy old guys who force me to hug them. And I’m totally with this song. My brother was SA’d by our pastor. He’s my twin and we were 11. (18 now). I haven’t gone to church since then and my parents totally agreed with never going to another church ever again, I mean he was hospitalized that’s how badly he was r@p€d. That's relatable. I've felt like that around my mom, but I've also learned that there's still truth in what she says, even tho she doesn't say it the right way. If something is true, you should follow it whether or not other people do it wrong. Truth is Truth, no matter who it's represented by.

I was not raped but I believe I was close, we were at a local pool and I was 11 and IN A BIKINI, I had thanked the pools owner for letting us swim and helping clean the glass, I should’ve guessed because my brother said he was glaring and flirting with some female life guards, we left, and my brother said “um, --I think he’s staring at you, and it’s not a normal look, he’s looking at you like he wants to assault you”I turned back, Saw the SAME MAN I was SO CLOSE TO looking at me like he wanted to SA me, walked a little faster, his eyes still on me, thankfully we got in the car before he could make a move and I was thinking about it throughout the car ride, I came home, told my mom, she said we don’t have to go to that pool anymore, went to my dads, he agreed, that pool owner was in his like, 50s/60s, I WAS A DANG 11 YEAR OLD, SA survivors are so, so, SO STRONG and I can’t imagine if we actually stayed long enough for him to do it, SA survivors, stay strong, and spread awareness, we will get through this❤

Are most churches homophobic like described in the song? Im actually asking honestly since my church openly accepts gay people, even having a gay pastor and a trans woman preacher. Everyone always ask "why aren't you Christian?" But how can i be? When the people who say "love thy neighbor" and "god loves all his children" are the people who say am a freak. A degenerate and a sinner. How can i love a god, who followers condemn me? I just want to love, even if its different than theirs. I've had men and women tell me that im a disgrace, that men shouldn't love other men. That hurts me more than anything I've ever been told. So that's why I'm not Christian.

Every time I hear something like this, it feels like a knife is being stabbed into my heart. I hate this so much. Not all Christians are like that tho, we still have problems we're not better than anyone else, but that's how a lot of people act. I share Jesus with people bc I love them, I don't love them so that I can "convert" them. ...but even with all that, can you judge the Bible based on people who manipulate it to their advantage?

The most obnoxious part of this song has been made into a meme in the shorts, with creators coming out of the woodwork to say that their pasters, cousins and dogs raped them as children. While some of them are no doubt true, I find it interesting that something like this became a trend out of nowhere. Tiktok is overflowing with young children who think serious trauma is all fun and games.
