in open diff rigs you should take a slower approach. left foot brake about 30-50% and easy on the gas, you'll trick the diff into transferring power to the other wheel. probably walk right up that.

@samjohnson9894
@samjohnson9894 5 лет назад
Justin King E-brake might be better than using the main brakes as it only impacts the rear axle. Engage it as you say, 30-50%, or until you can see both rear tires turning. If your front axle specifically needs to 'lock', then use left-foot braking. Edited to say: Love your channel, btw. Looks like good times! Stay safe!

With an auto in 4Lo, the old trick is not the hand brake but to use your brakes. The hand brake is for use in a RWD. Using the brakes will help distribute torque on both the front and rear axles.

At 9:35 on the video: You almost for sure have a factory, Trac Loc limited slip rear diff that is very worn. The clutch packs in those units would wear out but yours still offers a very little bit of limited slip action on a level surface. You should check into this and maybe replace the clutch packs, if in fact it is a limited slip.

Another great video, As predicted you will need to lock that Jeep up for best results. Get the LOKKA, 383.00 for the pair front and rear. or 194.00 rear and 234.00 front. These pieces are excellent and make such a difference.. Tommy was correct, need the lunchbox lockers, Roman said but then it wouldn't be a cheap Jeep. I feel lunchbox lockers are the absolute best value on a Jeep or off-road rig. Its all about pulling with 4 not 2.

Sadly without a spotter to help me navigate it I eventually had to give up. Even with traction control and good tires that snow and slush on top of mud, with that off camber hill is very difficult to get any traction on. I got to 5:41 on the video, and I stopped to post this. I'm guessing that your Cheap Jeep has the optional factory, Trac Loc, limited slip rear differential, thus the ability to drive off the diagonal rollers. The Trac Loc was a great option, although nowhere near as good as a true locking differential.
@JsGarage
@JsGarage 5 лет назад
I thought that as a possibility but then again the rollers are pretty close together for that tire size. I think the tire is just able to overcome the tight spacing of the rollers.

I vote for a more aggressive tire like BFG Mud Terrains or Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. All terrain tires are for sport utility wagons, not a Jeep. Also throw in a selectable locker in the rear and sway bar quick disconnects up front and you should be good to go. You're almost there, just a little more money.....
@406Steven
@406Steven 5 лет назад
There's already a lot of people complaining about the money they've spent on it (especially since they won't spend the money on lockers) so perhaps they could go hit up Craigslist for some used offroad tires or check out some local offroad shops to see if they have any worn but still OK tires in their scrap pile. That's what my buddies and I always did when we were wheeling.

Pull the rear diff cover and check for a limited slip. Just because it didn't come from the factory with one doesn't mean someone didn't have one put in later. Especially considering it's age. If you find one throw in a new clutch pack and enjoy. Remember, a limited slip will act a lot an open diff when tires are in the air. Be careful not to just burn the clutches out again expecting to much from it.

Handbrake is for torsen differential vehicles. Basically it was taught to military members to help the hmmwv get unstuck, then it filtered down. Unless your handbrake is stronger on one wheel and that happens to be the spinning wheel, then it won’t do shit for you with an open differential. With a torsen it’ll double to triple the torque the brake applies to the wheel with better traction.

My thoughts on the roller test; there is just enough overcoming inertia & drag in the drivetrain & the same thing on the big heavy knobby tires on small rollers. This leads to difficulty turning the tires on the rollers (overcoming inertia & quite a lot more drag compared to street tires). This mimics applying the brakes to just the tires on the rollers for a pseudo "traction control" if done somewhat quickly to maximize the affect overcoming inertia has that briefly helps power go to the tire with traction. This affect only helps a bit, just enough to get it off the rollers if done quickly enough, and doesnt help enough on the incline. Possibly if he punched it from a standstill and lightly held the brakes he might have even gotten off the rollers on the incline as well, but not sure. Also the wrangler is fairly lightweight so the inertia/drag affect helps more with this vehicle.

The build is complete on my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn and now looking to address the black paint that has several rough spots with the usual hood crows feet. Definitely painting it blue but not sure with paint, leaning more towards Raptor lining it. Much more durable off road, won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping, plus it looks much more aggressive.

The JK and JL are so expensive now. But if do the mods yourself, wow the older series is allot of fun. 4 x 4 is not cheap. False that this IS cheap. It is relative. $40,000.00 is allot of money vs. an oldie and spending over less than half that money. Wow, what you can on your own is amazing.

UnsulliedSpy They weren’t entirely clear about that, I just remember them rambling off prices. If that’s the case, then there should be some money to get a locker like Tommy suggested. My issue is that this is only a “Cheap” Jeep build because they bought it cheap. They said early on this was going to show you that you could build a cheap off-roading rig. This is not that. I get that they are sponsors, but if someone truly is wanting to cheap out, this is not the cheap route. I wish they were a little more hands on. They dumped over $700 to have the suspension put on, brakes replaced, tires mounted, and the alignment. I could have done the first two things in my driveway during the weekend and saved a few hundred dollars. I don’t mean to be so critical, but this is not the route I thought they were going.

@@SBF96 That's fair, and the interpretation of "cheap" is pretty vague--it would be more relatable if they did something like set a budget and try to buy and build the best rig they could for the given budget as that would remove the interpretation of "cheap" from the equation. I think they should invest in a limited slip or locker as well, but those are also pretty involved to install correctly so they'd be stuck paying a shop to set it up properly (re-shimming the ring & pinion, setting backlash, etc.).

UnsulliedSpy I agree with that thought.

Overall, another well-edited video from TFL. I enjoyed Carsten's build story. That young man has done a great job in researching and sorting most of the bling out of his add-ons, light bar and CAI notwithstanding. I do have a few comments: -He replaced his OPDA, not "OBDA." Anyone with an '05-'06 4L TJ should, as Carsten did, inspect their cam and pump driver gears. Replacement OPDAs run $100. -The K&N intake offers no advantage over the stock configuration. The original does not restrict airflow, filters better and, as stated, has a higher intake. -Taillight guards both decrease visibility and increase the likelihood of their snagging on brush and other trailside obstacles. Similarly, the Hi-Lift jack mount begs to bang, snag, and catch. The TJ's reduced width is an advantage in most cases. Why widen it? -The Mercedes-sourced six-speed NSG370 was only offered the last two years of the TJ run, not '03-'06 as stated, and is not nearly as robust as the TFL crew touts. Most TJ gear rowers will affirm the earlier, and stronger, Aisin AX-15 as superior, both in terms of strength and parts availability. -The sliders appear to be Rubicon take-offs, so they easily would bolt into the existing holes. Though not particularly beefy, they do offer a modicum of protection.

Gears. GEARS. GEEEEAAAAARRRSSSS. With the 4-cyl and those big tires, this thing is struggling even more than stock. You need to re-gear it. And while you're re-gearing, it wouldn't be a big deal to throw a cheap locker or limited slip at least into the rear end.

I always have my seatbelt on when I’m in a vehicle. When I was in college I was in my friends car parked on his street waiting for his brother and we were hit by a drunk driver at 40 mph.

I genuinely meant that I liked seeing this! Any time I get in my Car my arm goes for the seat belt without even thinking about it. Force of habit! Great Chanel Boys!!! Keep up the Great work!!!
