ok as someone who took a university course on using blender, nathan's dinosaur surprised me, for multiple reasons, mostly because when I first started the course, they basically said two things. A) Don't do organic things, those are hard to model, we will not be doing any organics until the second year of this class because they are so hard to model. B) Don't colour things using UV maps, colour them using the texture tool, using UV maps is hard and we won't be doing that until the second year of the class because its so hard. Anyways Nathan, congrats on designing an organic creature coloured with UV maps on your first time using blender.
@Trefox87
@Trefox87 4 дня назад
I also took a class on 3d modeling (for animation) and my thought like halfway through was "man, Nathan sure is confident in his modeling, I only ever made things using 1 shape that was extruded into the full model" only to realize he probably was looking at some prettg advanced and complex tutorials that probably arent the best for your very first model

@Enoploteuthidea
@Enoploteuthidea 4 дня назад
@@Avruthlelbh True, but its not even that- its just that those specific things to be harder/more frustrating to grasp right off the bat- so they tend to save them for later once youre more familiar with the tools youre using. That sorta like complaining that a woodworking class teaches you how to cut a square out with the saw before asking you to carve curved shapes

i was taught very similarly but then they chucked us in at the deep end for organic modelling and wanted a full fruit bowl of a bunch of different fruit and a self portrait head model for the same assignment. think i probably would have learned how to model better had i just used online tutorials and not the way they did it at my uni

Okay but like I just wanna genuinely thank Jacob with all of my heart! I have been wanting to make a game for for a long time, but every time I would do research into how to do it I would get so overwhelmed that I would give up on anything beyond making up characters and stories for it in my head. And like, I know it sounds kinda silly, but seeing Jacob just *make a thing* - like nbd just one little scene - just like… idk just made something click in my brain that I could, like… do that??? That this challenge is totally beatable actually??? I don’t know how seeing Jacob make the neatest drawtectives fanart ever happened to be the perfect antidote to my paralyzing fear and overwhelm, but it absolutely was! Now I’m hype and ready to go dump out all those ideas and characters in my head and put them into the thing they were made for - I’ve already started! - and I’ve never been more excited in my whole life! Thank you very much for that! 💜💜💜

OMG. I'm a sculptor, and Julia got SO much better of a result than I was expecting. Honestly! Not because I don't think Julia isn't capable, but because I know how many pitfalls come with that specific type of project. Moving Dioramas are SOOOOOooooooo much more than people think they'll be, just logistically WAY more complicated. And if you don't have any experience navigating those pitfalls it's really hard to get anything workable the first few tries. I know the scale was off and the movement was a little clunky, but still, FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC job!!!

As a printmaker, you did super good with your first try, Karina! The softer the lino / rubber the easier it is to just tear or accidentally cut. Easier on the hand and to cut, but you don't get as many prints and it might break ;-; So don't feel bad for your tiny tiger having issues because he looks super cute and literally everyone who does block printing has made the same mistake (I have glued bits back to my block for quick fix a TON lmao). I know you all have actual metrics for this, but this episode was a legit banger to me. From concept to execution - this is what I love about Drawfee all put together: cool art, role modeling the learning experience, good goofs, and even better friendship! 1. I was so excited to see Nathan try blender. I know Nathan wasn't happy with the product, but as a first attempt, he did everything he was trying to accomplish and made it work with what his skill level/ time limit was. He made a freaking green dinosaur! 2. Jacob's is so impressive to me because it combined the simple art style he likes with something we haven't really experienced on the channel before. He also made something so complicated feel very approachable in taking that extra step to make a scene. 3. I love seeing how Karina combines mediums, especially as a digital art channel. Bringing in how digital and traditional can work together is so cool and brings something fresh to the Drawfee program. Print block is also something that just generally interests me, and this encouraged me to try myself! 4. I could not wait to see Julia's product, even though I liked seeing the planning and preparation. I think using the dremmel made this feel more approachable for me as a viewer, and yet I am always so impressed with how creatively Julia approaches her art. I know this isn't about the art, but the sibling reveal (my first time anyway) was fun too!

An entire thing, using an actual engine. - Karina used woodworking. I don't think I've seen woodworking from Karina before. - Julia, being JULIA, made an entire diorama from scratch. All of you, good work on this one, seriously.

Note: Karina used a soft linoleum block, not wood. It's a very similar process though! c: It's super cool to see her do printmaking in any case

That wood working is crazy, i love it. It does a really good job of showing how much work it takes to make something with wood - it's really easy to watch all these youtube channels of people literally building a house from scratch and think "how hard can it be", the talent of carpenters is amazing.

For the next new-medium challenge Nathan will flesh out a Nobel-winning novel, Jacob will single-handedly make and release Half-Life 3, Karina will open a small printing press that inadvertently helps spark a revolution for which she'll also design the entire propaganda aesthetic that will go on to define a whole era, and Julia will make an actual, seaworthy boat and build a museum with interactive pieces and animatronics inside of it. Then the world will end!

Professional printmaker here! In case anyone is curious about why block softness matters, here’s some insight: block density/ softness is related to how crisp and sharp you can get your edges, how durable (long lasting) your block will be, what sort of equipment you can use to print your block (if it’s softer you need to hand print your blocks but if it’s sturdier you can you use a printing press), and if you choose wood as you carving medium you have an additional element of wood grain to consider. For the average person easy cut blocks work amazing and you probably won’t notice hardly any difference in the finished product! Karina you’re amazing and your blocks came out incredible!!

After Julia did that first Blender piece, I decided to try Blender, too. I thought "everyone probably says it's hard because it's time-consuming or monotonous, but I'm fine with that!" And then I tried to make a donut following BlenderGuru's tutorial and holy crap, Blender is hard because it's HARD. Things kept happening and I had no idea why. I'd try to attach one thing to another and suddenly the inside was on the outside. I'd move one thing and then something else would move and I wouldn't be able to figure out how they were attached. @@EclecticEggyYeah Blender can be used for everything Blockbench can but I think it can still helpful to have that trimmed back experience for beginners. Much like how Aseprite is useful to have despite Photoshop being capable of pixel art as well. It’s just a more focused application built for quick modelling vs trying to do absolutely everything like Blender does. It also avoids the problem Nathan ran into which is why I mentioned it: Sculpting 3D meshes is really complicated, especially when you plan on texturing and lighting them, without a strong foundation in how to structure 3D objects with fewer polygons.

as a 3d artist: 6:34 disappearing body- the boolean modifier just does that sometimes. I don't know either. Fun fact: It is a common misconception that anyone at all understands how blender works, it has a mind of it's own. 8:26 vector painting from what I understand is when you paint textures to make the model look more detailed than it actually is when reacting to light, usually for performance. For painting the model you wanna go to the materials window (it's open by default on the shading tab) and add an "image texture" node instead of "color attribute" then paint on that at the texture paint tab. You can paint both on the model itself or on the image, you can even open the image in an art program and do it there then put it on the model again (also if I remmeber correctly there's an addon that opens krita inside blender) Nathan did extremely well, my first several models were disembodied heads or unfinished characters, it's very impressive that he did a whole ass dinosaur and went all the way to rendering with only one day of practice. I was expecting a donut lol
@StraveTube
@StraveTube 4 дня назад
Ohhhh yeah that's totally it. I was trying to figure out how he maybe accidentally hit "H" or "/" on the body, but yeah, it was almost certainly an issue with the boolean mod. A bonus tip: sometimes switching the boolean modifier to either Fast or Exact can fix weird issues like that.
@thelionoob
@thelionoob 4 дня назад
@@StraveTube what personally happens to me is that the operations often get mixed up, like selecting union resulting in difference and whatnot. I only use boolean with basic shapes so it's not really a big issue but it is kinda comical that it could fumble so much with cylinders ans spheres lol but yeah boolean seems to be by far the most broken blender feature
