Was it a fail? I don't really think so. Sherry did very well with several of her purchases being replacements (so items will be leaving the house). Carla, you maybe could have done a little better (since the challenge was your idea) but you didn't do terribly. What I noticed was that both of you, while not resisting the urge to buy, at least were aware of what you were doing. I believe that the awareness and thinking through purchases is a big step toward eventually curbing your shopping. So don't consider it failing, but a positive experiment. You'll get there!

My favorite was when you were saying what you bought, your sister was so sympathetic just nodding like she felt it was a good purchase for you! She is so non-competitive. Just love that!

I did a low buy for a whole year, letting myself purchase 1 make up/skin care item per month and 1 item of clothing a month, I thought it was going to be easy as I don't consider myself a shopper, but once you start writing down 'everything' you buy, you realise how much you do buy, its shocking

I'm about the same age as you and the sales always get me, because I always think of sales being how they were when we were growing up - big sales twice a year in summer and winter/christmas. Then I realise you never really have to wait more than a month or two for a sale nowadays. Sales are the only time I 'fail'.

I find it helps me to delay or even stop purchases by adding to my Amazon save for later section of my cart. Usually when I review it a week or more later, I’ve realized I didn’t really need it.

dealing with addiction. is hard the excuses we make to disguise and hide our addictive behaviors get so creative and complex.

I used to buy things I ended up giving away without using. Then I decided to spend differently. I registered in dance classes with personal trainers to learn the moves faster. And this year I traveled to Europe twice. Visiting Andalusian palaces got me back into writing about Arabic loanwords in Portuguese. And it all started with the wish to spend less on what I don't need.

This video in kinda a therapy session between two sisters, I enjoyed the frank talk. I would see a SAFE stepladder as an essential since your sister has lots of stuff that are out of reach. I gave a very good one to my friend because I cared for her safety. The electric blanket for Carla is not an essential but it will add lot of comfort and in a sense it is useful. However a heavy wool blanket is even better, that is used all over the world and it doesn't use electricity. I suggest not looking at screens that advertise, dont go to websites that sell stuff. Find a HOBBY, create something, join a class, visit a friend, walk , exercise, learn to play an instrument, read, garden, volunteer etc... You will find that as you start buying less and less, it will curb your desires. And since you will busy yourselves with other activities you won't have the time to shop.

November is difficult for No Buy because of Black Friday deals and because I like to get ahead for Christmas to spread the cost of food and gifts. It’s always good to be mindful about spending though and I like to keep a list of items I actually need so that I don’t get sidetracked.

I would have failed in November because I just remodeled a spare bedroom for Christmas guests and I wanted all new bedding and pillows. Did I need new bedding? No. Did I need new nightstands from Wayfair? No. New lamps? Not really. But my guests will feel comfy and welcomed when they arrive.

I think you both did great considering the holiday sales AND that you're returning half the stuff anyway! Sure you had a couple of investment pieces but don't we all? (We bought a new TV.) The main take-away is that you both put thought into what you were buying, which is brilliant! Personally I prefer no-spend February and September as they tend to be easier months. Kudos to you both!! 👏🤩

I occasionally do a no buy grocery month just to clear the freezer and pantry out. The only exception is pet food or cat litter.

I find that doing a low-buy instead of no-buy is more sustainable. But doing a no-buy during November is difficult due to all the deals. I spent more money than I planned in November, but I *tried* to be intentional about my purchases - since some family members have birthdays in the next couple months. :)

It is kind of funny/valuable to see how Sherry was actually able to restrict herself more than you, when tempted. Maybe because she knew she had a problem, while you saw yourself as in control? Like alcoholics, who do best when they are aware of their issue, and know that they can't drink just a little (no further comparision, just that addiction works the same no matter the "drug"). And saying this as a sewist with a fabric buying addiction. I do need to stay mindful of the issue.

No Buy in November - Black Friday must make that quite a challenge! Why don't you try again in January? It works well for me in January, certainly, because there's usually been an excess of everything around Christmas/New Year. Do you have hot water bottles? I was thinking one of those might be good for Samson until the electric blanket arrives for him. Don't be hard on yourselves for spending so much and bringing so many new things into the house during November. I wonder, had you decided what you would allow yourself to buy before you began? It looks like you both enjoy buying clothes and shoes. Perhaps next time you could put a specific ban on those things? It's only for 30 days, after all. Just a thought. Even if you say you failed i think it was good to analyse your shopping triggers and try to avoid them next time. I think you succeeded a lot of times. You can't expect things go from 100 to 0 in just a month. There are so many tricks you can apply like deleting your credit card information from amazon so it adds an extra step to a purchase. And think about how much time you spend on looking for a good deal. If you can replace this activity with another one that makes you happy.
