For anyone curious, poster paint is basically just gouache (which is just opaque watercolour) you can reactivate it by wetting it, (which is why you use PVA to give it more of a acrylic quality). Oga also does a lot of mixing to create a variety of greys that makes the pure colours "pop" more. The poster paint paper is definitely important for painting wet-on-wet (it doesn't buckle). This was a great video and some really beautiful paintings :D

Daidus casually explaining atmospheric perspective to Emily to help her understand the elements of her landscape painting that are further away start fade into lower contrast and saturation towards the background color as they receed is so wholesome and sweet. I just love seeing artists encourage each other. You'd never know by looking at their finished art pieces that this is their first time using a new medium. Makes me wanna try out poster paints.

There is a manga/anime I wanna mention!! Blue Period! It's legit, for me, THE artist manga. For the longest time growing up, I desperately wanted there to be a manga that pertained to art. There have been a lot of short stories or one-shots about painting, some anime where they briefly mention an artist, and anime about being a manga artist or animator, but never actually what it is like to be an artist and dedicate yourself to the medium. Blue Period came across my radar and it's about a boy in high school who finds a passion for it and devotes himself to learning how to paint. The story is so surreal and the main character goes through things that every artist can relate to. Not just artists either, but anyone with a passion. Blue Period is sort of like the visual art equivalent to Blue Giant, in case that interests Daidus :)

I sobbed like a baby when the anime had him paint his mother to prove to her why he wants to go to art school. She started crying, then I started crying, and I guess we were both sobbing messes 😂. That moment hits for me the same way the opening of A Silent Voice does (the...thing that the main character almost did. I don't have children but I cannot fathom the depths of gut-wrenching hurt it would cause at the idea of waking up one morning and your child is just...not there and never again will be. The movie brushes it away with humor after he changes his mind but that's always stuck with me and the families that sadly didn't get to laugh it off). Aw crap, now I'm crying and it's barely 7 in the morning, what the heck 😂

D: But I totally get you, I cried all through A Silent Voice as well, there are just some anime that are so down-to-earth and surreal, feel very tangible that you can't help but connect with it as a human being. Especially with empathy. I cried a few times in Blue Period, I think the moment I tried the hardest was when he had that conversation with Yotasuke when they went to visit TUA before the exams, Yaguchi went back to prep school and ended up having the famous crying scene where he said "I will kill them all with my art" also because at the time, I was having a moment of "man, my art feels bland, it falls flat, I cant do what these people can do.." At that time, I knew I could draw and to put my families mind at ease I told them "find ill go to school, ill do art cause I know im okay at it" but that scene in the manga reawakened my love for the art medium and helped me finally decide to take art seriously. So this manga really has a special place for me. TBH the anime felt a little lackluster, but that's the curse of manga first, anime after.

I sleep more deeply in silence, but it's just hard to have 8 hours of pure silence, so I often turn on my fan because I don't want to get woken up by a barking dog or something. Maybe I'll try silence tonight.

As an adult, AC all the time equals a light bill email I fear to open 😂. Also, AC's turn on and off while a fan does not. I also like that a fan is easier to maintain, lol. I use AC once I'm off of work (I mostly work from home but still wait until 5PM to turn the AC on) and until bedtime, and then use the fan. Also, for other fan sleepers, do yourself a huge favor and clean your fan every few months. I had thought my cheap, $17 Walmart fan that I've had for about eight years had finally begun to die because it didn't blow air very far. I'd cleaned it before, of course, but it'd been some time and I'd forgotten about doing so. I just did it about a month or two ago and that crisp air that covered the whole distance of my bed (so I could feel it no matter what side I was on) was just...perfection 😂. I also use another fan in my "office" for ambient noise when taking phone calls. Noise cancelling headphones removes it so the customer doesn't hear it, but the ambience helps with the otherwise possible echo in the room since I'm still furnishing the space.

@@shlimon7667 That is true but when actually drawing it on the day it is recorded doesn't mean that it is uploaded the same day. It takes a while to edit out parts of the video and if it's too long, it will take a while to get it out. I just emphasize on the date because I see a lot of young artists and a few artist who dont do it. Even my college art teacher emphasized on how important it is to date a drawing/art piece.

My mother has all the Ghibli films on DVD, so when I was little my mom was the full time working parent, and my dad was a locksmith who also watched me and my younger siblings, so I only saw my mom at dinner. So when My mom had a day off on the weekend, we would watch Ghibli movies together. I think my first memory was watching Totoro.

Daidus is really showing his art school chops in these videos! His understanding of volume and color is really impressive. I think that Emily's first attempt wasn't ending up the way she wanted to was because of that first giant hill of brown going off in the distance, and it made it harder to see the horizon lines. I think its worth it to try that same reference again with just a line through the middle of the canvas to make sure everything is in line! Her second attempt is REALLY good, I think partially because you were able to oreint yourself around that line! :D

Couple of tips for doing backgrounds: Work your way from the back towards the front. Also don’t forget horizon lines, they are super important for perspective! I think this would’ve been especially helpful in Emily’s first attempt as the lack of a horizon line made the path look more like a brown blob rather than a path fading into the the distance. Regardless, the final paintings turned out great! You guys should feel proud of your progress so far

My Ghibli introduction was during COVID! I was getting really into anime, so I decided to look up some movies. I started on Hulu by watching Pokémon movies and whatnot. Then, when I learned that HBO had so many anime movies, I decided to check out one that seemed interesting. The one that caught my eye was Princess Mononoke (I was also really into wolves at the time). After watching it, I was like, "Wow, that was cool! I wonder what other anime movies HBO has?" That led to me watching a lot of the classic Ghibli movies.

First Ghibli experience was Princess Mononoke at the ripe age of 7. My mother had blindly bought the vhs tape for my brother (5 years older than me) who proceeded to burst in tears during Ashitaka's first battle with the boar because the curse of hatred with all those worms scared the shit out of him. So you have my mother apologizing to my weeping brother while I'm sitting inches from the tv like that one puppy in the 101 dalmatians because I'd never seen something that raw before. Disney and Pixar movies were my only frame of reference for animated pictures of that scale, and they were obviously extremely good, but Mononoke straight up rewired my brain chemistry lmao

Tip that I do for traditional, use the back of your brush to collect paint from bottle and keep paper towels or a rag to clean your brush after dipping so that you don't have a bunch of color in your cleaning water if you want to dilute other colors

22:44 I'm from New Orleans but have gone to Baton Rouge for school events, and I stayed at one of those hotels once. I drove with a friend who was staying with his aunt in another part of town, so I was stuck at the hotel until he came back because I-10 traps you in. I have no plans to go back there again.

I relate so hard to Daidus about getting influenced by anime/manga (especially those specific sports animes 😂) Also just love this episode in particular as a huge Ghibli fan (I've been wanting to try poster colors for ages - this episode really inspired me to finally try my hand at it!!) My introduction to ghibli films was The Secret World of Arrietty, which I randomly watched on TV late at night as a teen, with no idea what it was at the time, well before I was into any anime, second was Tales of Earthsea, which I saw in the exact same way

Being an early 80's baby, my first Ghibli was Nausicaä of the valley of the wind way before i had any recognition of animation studios or even anime as a separate animation genre. And the movie always stuck with my mind but for a very long time i couldn't even remember the name of it. Once i got older and finally got "back" into anime and understanding what it was, it became a mission for me to find whatever anime we used to watch as kids (which was a lot of late 70's series apparently) and rediscovered the Nausicaä movie in my mid 20's. Still probably my favourite Ghibli movie and the Ohmu my favourite creature ever!

CAT RETURNS MENTIONED! It's my favorite Ghibli film, along with howls moving castle. the message behind it and the character growth is so beautiful - for both of them. My first Ghibli experience was my 90's VHS tapes having Kiki's delivery service commercials. I didn't watch it until 2015 and it was beautiful and woke up so many childhood memories. instantly watched everything else Ghibli and loved it

i saw spirited away's trailer in theaters, and just fell in love with the art and music. Cartoon Network did a marathon of Ghibli movies and i watched whatever i could. Now ive seen most of them and absolutely am a fan.

The first Ghibli movie was probably My Neighbor Totoro, which came out on TV in Finland during Easter. but the favorite is Porco Rosso which I watched a few years ago. Finland has Moomin and 1990s anime. There was little confusion when Hayao Miyazaki said he participated in Moomin, but it was earlier anime production in 1969 that Tove Jansson didn't like and it wasn't published in Finland.

First Ghibli experience was Spirited Away. They used to air it on Cartoon Network back in the early 2000's, and I was probably 7 or 8 and absolutely loved it so much that the 2nd time they showed it I recorded it with on a VHS tape. I remember watching it daily for months, until eventually the VHS tape broke (did that thing where the tape spilled out of the player) during the bathhouse scene and I CRIED. Flash forward to when I was 19 or 20, I was talking to some friends and they brought up Ghibli movies. I didn't recognize the name, so I Googled it and saw the poster for Spirited Away, and I IMMEDIATELY started bawling - had to deafen in the Team Speak call to watch it right then - it felt like I'd recaptured some long-lost part of myself, a memory that, ironically, had started to feel like a dream.

I love third wheeling in every Spilled Ink video lol like it's so silly to watch Emily and Daidus bickering nonstop in one video and in another, they start telling cute stories about things they've done together. It was so sweet when Daidus gave Emily tips on her second try while encouraging her to keep it up since her first go didn't go as expected T v T
