Roller Skiing with a Pro - Norways’ Dangerous Sport
Become Norwegian
Norway is renowned for its national sport, cross country skiing, also known as Xc Skiing, so it’s no surprise that roller skiing was invented as a way to ‘ski’ throughout the year, primarily during the summer when there’s no snow. We found a professional roller skier to show us beginners the ropes and find out if roller skiing really is as dangerous as it looks? Spoiler alert - it is
Pros like Klæbo, Sundby, Northug and Johaug and many other pros roller ski through out summer to be ready for the winter season.
Cross country skiing for beginners looks a bit like this, alot of falls and bambi legs.
Skiing is big part of norwegian culture and there is more to skiing that you maybe know, you can go downhill skiing, backcountry skiing, Alpine touring, Telemark skiing, Frestyle skiing and yes cross country skiing.
But skiing in summer can be bit difficult so Roller skiing or called in norwegian rulle ski is the solution to become a true norwegian. And where is better then the world famous and must visit norwgian site of holmenkollen, the olympic ski jump arena in Oslo. Dont even get us started on Ski jumping, that is next level.

@@rayonaire1262 yeah I see that could be a challenge, as we are no expert on roller skiing or in shops in Korea it can be a bit difficult. But maybe the lovely people from - Swenor - can help you out.

We rollerski here in the UK where most people don't even know what cross country skiing is, let alone rollerskiing. There are a handful in clubs around the UK but not here in Shropshire where we're definitely a novelty at the local cycle circuit. It's almost impossible to rollerski on the roads round here as they're either too busy, too badly surfaced or both. I find it harder than skiing on snow. The consequences of a fall on tarmac are higher than on snow so people tend to tense up more and technique suffers as a result. FYI there's an annual rollerski race up Cairn Gorm mountain in Scotland. It's not quite the Blink festival but it's still an impressive feat!

I’m quite sure that even Alistair didn’t even know this was a thing until he moved here! Maybe we should attend the race in Scotland some time. 😮

Absolutely, I rollerski in Oslo but like the guy said in the video I see it more as a necessity than something I enjoy doing. Therefore I chose the route carefully, I never go something anywhere without checking it first on a bike or running to make sure I can always stop while rollerskiing or there is nothing unexpected. The consequences of injury are too high for me

I skate roller ski here in the US but it is normal that people here have no idea what it is. I get a lot of looks and questions. BTW You can get them with brakes. Jenex makes speed reducers that can also be great for beginners. Another American brand, Pursuit sells a pull brake that attaches at the waist that works great. My first month of roller skiing I always wore knee and elbow pads because you will fall a lot. I still use the knee pads because they don’t really hinder my flow and they add safety. I typically roller ski about 10 miles a session, 2-3 days a week in the off season. I’m not a racer I just enjoy it and it’s great conditioning as you mentioned for cross country ski season.

Yes there are a lot of people but probably you can only find them in areas where it’s cold enough and there are groomed trails available at least a couple months a year.

Besides roller-skiing, there is also "cross skating". Cross skates (also called by the name 'Skike' (one of the brands)) have two large wheels with pneumatic tires. Your feet are between the front and back wheel, very low center of gravity. The cross skates have a calf brake, and they can be used both on paved and unpaved surface. It's a bit more different to cross country skiing than roller skis. For example you cannot use the snow plow technique for braking. But being able to go off-roads is a big bonus, and I think it would still work as training for cross country skiing. At least you will train endurance and balance. Here's a short introduction video in German: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ACaGtfr-rok.html

I forgot to add: Different models of cross skates exist: Some are only suitable for skating technique, others also for classic technique.

I am surprised these two didn't show up with knee and elbow pads. I took an interest in biathlon and I don't live near snow, go figure, but I went about learning to skate ski. I have used the larger wheeled pneumatic tired skate ski and the smaller, hard rubber wheeled type. I prefer the pneumatic for the improved stability. I did use elbow and knee pads the first couple of months. Even now, about 4 years later, I can still get the unexpected fall. I have also noticed, that although my technique has improved, overall fitness has diminished. Certainly balance and core strength is better, but rollersking limits how hard I can actually train. It's a bit of a fear factor and practicality. Strength comes, for me anyway, from hill intervals. I can only workout on a hill that is safely negotiable coming back down. Like they say, you can't snow plow, yeah you can V step a bit, but speed builds rather quickly. I have an ankle brake on the right ski, and that can cause uneven braking. There is a bike trail I often use that has a curved descent into a tunnel underpass. It turns to the left, I can't see the whole turn ahead of me because of some brush and bushes. Braking on the right and trying to step turn is almost impossible because to brake you straighten that leg to work the brake. I would like to use the width of the whole trail but dare not in fear that a cyclist could be coming towards me. I also fear the careless person not staying in their lane. It would be a good spot to practice a step turn otherwise. My solution to the fitness issue is to return to cycling, I raced 14-15 years, once upon a time. I can climb any hill I want and come back down under control. I'm still going to rollerski to maintain cross country technique, arm/shoulder strength and balance.

you can change wheels to slower ones. While num 1 is the fastest, most people go on 2. But also you can have num 3 on back and 2 in front, this way you can make sure you won't get a neck braking speed downhill.

how slow can you go and stay on grass until every little tiny progress leads to more progress. The coach here was awful. Ridiculous allowing newbies to injure themselves and then show it to somehow demonstrate what? national Norwegian pride? Let's allow the tourists to get hurt? . Where is the logic there?

No, unless you do something called a "grass stop" where you will slide into the grass to stop your momentum. There are versions with brakes, but they haven't really caught on 😅

@Becomenorwegian Год назад
Brakes would be very good safety measure.👀 We succeed with “grass stopping” by simply face planting into the grass, very effective, but not recommended🥴
@randalbladel2817
@randalbladel2817 Год назад
Sure. Just run into something! Seriously, you can slow down with a very wide snowplow. Some brands have brakes as an option, but they aren’t terribly effective or popular. The skis are designed with wheels that have some level of hysteresis for resistance, to try to emulate the speed of real skis on real snow, so they are not as fast as inline skates
@dm5rkt
@dm5rkt Год назад
Yes, you can plough-brake just like on snow skis.
@paulblichmann2791
@paulblichmann2791 11 месяцев назад
If you snowplow the skis run right into each other. They grip like dragster tires and won't skid. You have to do reverse skating. Or you can step-turn slalom, if you to start from the very top of the hill.
@paulblichmann2791
@paulblichmann2791 11 месяцев назад
Problem with rollerskiing is it's too fast. Classic is 80% doublepole. Skate is 80% no-pole. Unless you go uphill. Then you have to get back down. 💀🛑
