I just wanted to add a little info about the Ezra Cask Strength, as I am a huge fan and have several bottles. There is also a sister product called Distiller's Collection (Which usually comes in at a slightly lower proof). The Cask Strength is a single barrel picked by a store and the Distiller's Collection is a single barrel picked by the distillery for a store. Both are generally around that 5-6 year old mark. Also, for comparison sake you'll want to pay attention to the barrel filled date on the small strip under the main label...Lux Row was an NDP prior to 2018, so any barrels filled before January 2018 used Heaven Hill and anything filled in 2018 or after was distilled by Lux Row using their mash bill...There are also differences in the barrel numbers (HH filled barrels use a 7 digit barrel number and LR filled barrels use a 4 digit number, but the fill date is probably the best indicator of who distilled it). 2023 is the first year Luxco has used their own distillate in these offerings, and at least earlier this year, barrel picks included samples of both to choose from. This information also applies to Rebel Cask Strength and Rebel Distiller's Collection products, which is a wheated mash bill. For my palate, I much prefer the Heaven Hill rye based bourbon, but the wheated bourbon that Lux Row is producing...I think is one of the best wheated mash bills available, It's phenomenal and I can't wait to see how it develops over time with some more age on it. I would be curious to know what the fill date is on the bottle you guys tried, to see which distillate you were sampling.
I’ve been diving deep in bourbon in the last year! I came across you guys fairly quick and been a fan ever since! I truly respect y’all’s wise bourbon ways. Definitely have learned a lot! Thank you
Those tasting notes of smeared lightning bug and then it tastes like my dentist office smells 😂! I had to pull over I was laughing so hard! Thank you two for always being genuine
I love my bottle of Ezra Brooks Cask Strength. I'd love to see a comparison between store picks for sure! I will definitely buy it again if I ever see it in PA. Here is a fun fact about the term Navy Strength. On the old ships, gin, rum, and gunpowder were stored in wooden barrels near each other. If the rum or gin barrels ever got a leak, their higher alcohol content- at least 57.15% (navy strength) would ensure that the gunpowder that may have gotten wet from these leaks would still burn. It's nice to know that it's not just some random number but had a practical purpose! Cheers Guys!
Coming from a Marylander, Old Line does it right! Everything I've tried from them has been very high quality. Loving the new oak barrels' influence on the single malt. It is definitely more bourbon-y than any scotch I've had. Solid stuff indeed.
Kurt gets more butterscotch on bourbon than any other channel I watch. I think its just the melding of what most other channels call "Brown sugar and Vanilla" plus the ethanol.
Love Chattanooga 111!! It's one of my always in stock bourbons. Rye is normally my favorite drink, but I also wasn't crazy about the Chattanooga Rye. I'll finish the bottle, but I'll stick to their 111 and stay with Angel's Envy or another rye.
You need to get your hands on Ammunition. They have a rye finished in pinot noir AND a straight bourbon finished in cabernet sauvignon. Both bottles are under $40 in KY. Downside. They are 90 proof.
Big fan of both Green River offerings. I like Ezra Brooks Cask Strength, but liked Rebel Cask Strength more. Chattanooga BIB and Founders 11 Year Anniversary are pretty good. Chattanooga 111 is a little too malty for me. 🥃
I've got a bottle of that Old Line and the first time I had some the immediate tasting note that popped into my head was Quaker Oats Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bar, and now it's all I can think of when I have it!
In the British Navy, gin and/or rum was stored on ships next to gunpowder. In combat, barrels would break and moisten the gunpowder, but the gunpowder would still explode if the ABV was sufficiently high.
If I could make a suggestion, I would say try Horse Soldier if you can find it. It is readily available in North Carolina. (I don’t see any on the wall behind you, i assume you haven’t had it) Their cask strength is quite good IMO. I would send a bottle except its in the $90 range. Our whiskey club also unanimously loved Mount Gay Black Barrel Cask Strength. It is rum finished in bourbon barrels, and it is fantastic. If you liked the gin, this would be worth a try. (Cask strength is unfortunately only available at the distillery in Barbados, but that’s a nice trip) We made smoky old fashioned cocktails and multiple people in the club said “this is the best cocktail I have ever had.” My bottle is almost empty now. Will have to go back to the island.
Whoops holes! Need them! Thanks for the sagamore pick Trenton. I think it’s tremendously good. I’m getting burnt crembule and maple with a touch of wintergreen sneaking in and out sometimes.
Huge fan of the Chattanooga 99 Rye. That was my intro to their products. Funny thing is I didn't really get the 'bitter' element though. Funny how our palettes are all different, while picking up a lot of the same flavors at the same time!
Hi Guys. On a similar (but not really) note... I took your scotch suggestion from a previous show, and purchased Bunnahabhain 12. You nailed that one💯 Thanks for the insight👊 You always have a good line-up and enjoy watching.
I've bought the Old Line. I think it was a barrel pick, can't remember. If people go into it not expecting bourbon, scotch or rye I think they will appreciate it more.
I think Green River is sourced by Bardstown Bourbon Co. They got bought, renamed and I think they are making their own whiskey but are sourcing till their barrels age up.
I agree with you guys about Chattanooga 111. I have a bottle and quickly found out young grainy taste makes me gag. I keep it for friend that like to experiment.
Always enjoy your videos from here in Sweden. Often with a dram of some quality distillate in my glass. Navy strength comes from the British Navy and the 18th century I believe. The barrels for the sailor's daily Gin or Rum rations were stored in the gunpowder room. And should one of the barrels spring a leak it needed to be strong enough (I believe somewhere around 55% ABV) that the gunpowder would still ignite should some of that good stuff seep into it.
The Knickerbocker gin sounds intriguing. I'm interested to see what Kurt or maybe Tim Kirkland come up with cocktail wise using it. Maybe a Christmas Martini???
Navy strength refers to usually gin or rum at around 57.1 abv. That is because it was stored near the gun powder and if the barrels broke it, that level wouldn’t harm the powder and still allowed it to explode.
Thanks guys and great pic of the Knickerbocker Gin love to try that. I met a member of the Chattanooga team on the beach last summer nice guys and they are trying hard.
I picked up one of the Ezra Brooks cask store picks from TW up here and it was $58. Mine is pretty sweet and I don't get any youthy notes on it. It does has kind of a short finish for 120 proof imo though.
Chatt Whiskey is a gem. They started with great sourced, now they've got some really good young of their own. Can't wait to see how it changes as their stuff gets older. The Founder's Blends, BiBs, and experimental barrels are always great buys/trys.
14:17 The Bottle Shop here in Columbus, GA did a store pick of Ezra Brooks Cask Strength that was their own distillate that was fantastic. It oddly shifted flavor profiles throughout the bottle from a maple syrup walnut flavor to a rich Carmel orange marmalade flavor. My palette might just be broken, but it was delicious nevertheless haha
Btw kids,You were correct on that Bookers. I cracked mine and that product should not be in a bottle. I'm not sure I can even use it for mixed drinks or sauces.
Hi guys , love your shows, I am English but live in mid south Mexico. I am so jealous that you get all you want in whisky , here bourbons are so limited , I love your new stuff so much , we would never see them here , I have been to the states many t8mes and always try as many good whiskeys as I can, never enough though. I have a cocktail mix you may like for a summer tr6 out . 2 oz, wild turke6 101, half ounce if ktacken black , and half ounce of Bowmore single malt
Speaking of Grape Nuts, many years ago I had an unopened box of it coming up on it's expiration date and I shook the box carrying it from the cupboard to the counter. After I set it down I could here something squirming inside the box. I never looked inside but it went straight into the garbage can. That's the last time I ever bought a box of Grape Nuts.
I always look forward to your reviews!! Entertaining, educational, and you always have unique topics. You made a comment that you liked the Chattanooga Rye but you wouldn't buy another one to have. That made me think of a possible new video topic. What 5 Bourbons do you always make sure you have a extra backup bottle on the shelf. Those 5 you never want to run out of! Just an idea.... keep up the great videos guys, I'll keep watching!
I only recognize the Ezra Brooks Cask Strength. We currently have that in Pennsylvania. $49.99. And it is a Fine Wine and Good Spirits exclusive in Pennsylvania as well. And I looked up “Navy Strength”…Nowadays the term navy strength refers to spirits, usually gin or rum that are bottled at 57% abv.
I really like the Green River especially at the price point. I have a bottle of the Ezra from Trail Inn but haven’t opened it yet and it was $45. Cheers
I haven't had any gin since I boosted some from my Dad's liquor cabinet around 52 years ago (at 16) and haven't wanted to try it since. If someone gave me a taste of what you tried i would try it again, but that would be it. TonyB
Funny thing I was drinking a Ezra Brooks store pick from Cured in Columbia Maryland restaurant when I was watching this & I loved it & they offered 2 different ones ..... 1 call the nose & the other the mouth & they were named perfectly
I would like to see y’all review James e pepper 1776. That was the first bottle I ever bought and started my bourbon journey. Would love to hear y’all’s thoughts
My local Binny's has like 4 of those Ezra Brooks store picks right now. The flavor notes on their website really caught my eye but I'm a little cautious now, even though I know every barrel is different.
Hey since i recently found out you two are ALSO in the great state of indiana why not try a "local" distillery, Indiana Whiskey Distillery. They have their original called "just bourbon" HOWEVER they just released a new whiskey called "summer jamz" that has strawberry notes! Would love to see you review ANY of their products
I haven't seen you guys try Calumet. The 18 year is really phenomenal. The 12 is excellent, but perhaps a little sweet. Having a little more oak tannin on the 18 year balances that sweetness really well.
Good review. That Chattanooga is too malty for me. I like the Hard Truth Malted Rye's. I enjoy the Ezra Brooks Cask Strength. Green river is good for the price.
Google: “Navy strength” is a term that refers to a spirit that is bottled at exactly 57% alcohol by volume. The term was coined by the branding consultant John Murphy on behalf of Plymouth Gin in 1993 for something that used to be called 100º UK proof spirit. Nowadays, the term is usually associated with gin or rum, and brands like Woods 100 are 57% and share a common dark, rich characteristic that is reminiscent of the rums carried on board ship in the 19th century.
I had the Ezra Brooks store pick (shout out to Peco Liquors, Wilmington DE) and found it rather harsh, more than a little astringent, and hot, even for the proof. (Adding 'buggy' to my tasting notes lexicon.)
I like a glass of bourbon on the rocks in the evening, but I've never been quite as knowledgeable as the two of you. When I pour a little in a glencairn glass and try the nose, while you get vanilla or caramel or oaky notes, I just get bourbon. But last week I decided to try a bottle of rye. I don't think I've ever tried rye whiskey before, so since Trent likes them so much, I decided to try one. I meant to write down the name of one you like, but forgot, so I bought a bottle of Tin Cup Rye. I poured a little in the glencairn glass and swished it around, the first thing I got was the alcohol and it was harsh. But then I got a definite orange zest note. I was shocked. That was the first time I ever got anything. Is that what you get with Tin Cup Rye?
I like to try the bourbons you taste, sometimes. My budget is nowhere near yours, though. My Friday pour is 1792 small batch right now. And I have a bottle of E.H. Taylor small batch that is for special occasions.
Chattanooga use to source its juice, which in my opinion was far superior. The Cask use to be 115 or 114. I was excited when they finally released their own,but was so disappointed in it that I wrote them a strongly worded email.
Actually, I sent you the 107 proof Ezra Brooks Distiller's Collection. I really sang its praises based on the first bottle. But when I got two more and sent you one, my bottle wasn't as good - same barrel. I'm not sure how two bottles from the same barrel could be so different, but I hope yours is better. I would love it if you guys did a distillery review of EB.
I got a barrel pick from my bourbon group "big bourbon club" out of Louisville and they did a jack pick and that is delicious. Would like to send you a sample. I think you would enjoy it.
I plunked down over 60 bucks for the Ezra Brooks Cask Strength, and was thoroughly unimpressed. I regret that purchase, and I'm usually all for cask strength whiskey. It just had a gnarly flavor that wasn't pleasant.
