What makes a shop accessible to people with needs, such as the blind/visually impaired, wheelchair users or those with autism and sensory issues?
UNIQLO Singapore rolled out its pilot Access initiative in 2023, and CNA Insider got three shoppers to test out its quiet-hour assisted shopping services, as well as wider walkways and a wheelchair-friendly fitting room.

"Quiet hour" with no music and dimmed lights could be a great chance for people suffering from light triggered seizures or severe migraines etc for example. I find this concept very interesting and amazing, especially when offered for free. These people need enough money for medications and treatments. Congratulations!❤

As someone who worked retail, I can add notes from my experience: 1. The store lights are IMHO way too bright already, but in the ~hour before opening, they are at a lower level to save electricity, which is plenty bright in my opinion 2. The BGM is easy enough to turn off and on, except ours was in a difficult place to reach, so it was left on(don't remember if it started with the store opening hours, or just ran 24/7) Note: the BGM is run by a computer, remote controlled play/pause is easy to implement Other note about the music: having an annoying pop music playlist that is in total ~8 hours long and is changed yearly is a great way to drive the employees insane 3. Wide aisles: Sadly management had the idea that the more stuff is in the walkable area, the better, so if you use a cane, walker, or wheelchair, you need to repetitively adjust to avoid hitting things My opinion: 2 persons should be able to cross each other with shopping carts and no issues, the wide area is also great for moving pallets of stuff around 4. Overstacked shelves and rods is a bad idea, if someone hits something in the slightest, it's very likely that it's going to start a chain reaction Honestly, just try asking in an email to the store if you have special needs TL;DR: most of the accessibility features are already there in one form or another, stores just need to implement them

This was a great reminder for what I take for granted every day. Even though this was just one trip, it was clear that the experience made such a difference to the people with disabilities featured and their families. It even seemed like they were surprised by what was possible today and in the future. I hope that more of this can be done.

the "identifying the motorcycle" part isnt uniqlo's fault, they used a google service (google form) and google had that identify if youre not a robot captcha, overall it is very nice to see more company offer services to people in need. it would be lovely to have this type of service in indonesia soon!

I think it is Uniqlo's fault because they didn't have to use a Google form. They could have chosen another service to build their questionnaire. I love using Google forms personally because it's free, so many people are familiar with it and it's easy for me to use as someone who is not tech savvy. Corporations have the capital to pay for better services and to pay tech savvy people to make questionnaires that meet many different people's needs.

Captchas usually have the option to listen to the puzzle so I'm not quite sure what was going on there.

One big problem in sg is how expensive space is. Wheelchair/PMD users need more space, but rental is so expensive… Most retailers just want to stuff more products in the space to make the best use of their space to display as many products as possible… Smaller shops especially are already tiny to begin with.

I think with small stores exceptions can be made. Perhaps they can still offer to help customers with disabilities by bringing out some items to look at. Due to the lack of space to allow them to freely roam inside a tiny shop. I think what’s important is everyone does what they can to reasonably accommodate and help include them into society. It’s progress.

Great job to Uniqlo for their efforts to be more inclusive and to CNA for covering the story. It is quite surprising how little people without disabilities know about those with disabilities and their needs, but I hope with initiatives like this, we can all become more considerate. People with disabilities have every right to feel included and to be able to have their needs met.

I’m in love with Uniqlo since they opened up shop in Western Australia! Staff is so friendly and helpful. I don’t have disabilities but I have a personal assistant who adopted me 🤣 She knows what I prefer and how I like my style. Helped me out with sizes when I was starting out and now my entire wardrobe is only Uniqlo. I love the quality and choices so much!

If would be good if William tried wearing a blindfold and moving about the store. Or roleplay as a customer with his colleagues so every person can feel what it's like to be visually impaired. It's not easy and you'll only realize it when you feel it yourself. Many of us able-bodied people take our senses for granted. Even seeing people have difficulties, for example those in wheelchairs who have to manouvre in narrow spaces or have their eye level at most peoples' butt/groin level.

I love Uniqlo, I live in Japan and I buy all my families clothes here. I was pregnant in the winter just gone I felt a bit ill so they gave me a seat and someone stayed with me until my husband arrived. They are great

as someone eith AuDHD, this has been such a pleasure to see. I'm high-functioning, but there are always those days when visual and audio stimuli get too much for me to handle, and the breakdowns are usually a nightmare to deal with. initiatives like these make me so happy. it really feels like we are finally seen.

this is really great, as someone with 'high functioning' autism, i have to buy very expensive ear plugs or even wear my apple airpods in order to just to block out the noise, function or communicate with staff. really wish there were more companies who offer these kinds of services with people with differing abilities!

To reduce distractions, maybe they could consider curating the items onto a rack/ wall based on what the customer wants to find. But wow im so heartened to see this initiative by uniqlo! Hopefully this will be the start to a more progressive and inclusive society!

My local supermarket is having quiet times everyday from 1pm until 3 pm. They turn down the music and dim the lights to make it more accessible for people

I like this article a lot. It shows the efforts that Uniqlo has put in for those that need it, but doesn't hide that it's not a perfect system. But this is also the kind of feedback Uniqlo, or those that want to start something similar, needs to make the experience even better

This is clever business! As a disabled customer, when it’s possible I spend more in the shops that assist me. I think that most shop assistants enjoy helping disabled customers because generally we appreciate the help especially when it’s given with a friendly attitude.

Im impressed that they offer this service for those with special needs. That at least makes up for some of the rudest sales associates Ive ever encountered at either of their Chicago stores(one now closed).

Their clothes are great! Good quality and not super expensive. A lot of basics - just very simple and versatile. Here in Singapore we joke that it's the "uniform" for men here because everyone's wearing it haha.

Its great that both viewed it a a learning experience... The part about youtube was understandable but hopefully with more understanding the store itself might want to provide rough ideas of what to expect with certain clients so employees dont have to look at up the night before in youtube. Though its a amazing service and no extra fee. Makes you hope more places so this though it would make me want to shop at an accessible store all the time. My daughter has autism so sometimes it can be allot even with usi g a narrow wheelchair for safety because in malls most places have extremely narrow spaces and tends to cause you to bump or accidentally knock things if it gets caught on the wheels.

this is a really nice way give people who on disability for access than ignoring it 💖 I mean in America... when blind people hit a cane on people's feet and most of them don't understand about blind and they get mad for "hitting em" 🤦‍♂

As a disabled person I love that you can book private shopping time if you need it. However I’d also love to see all stores to have these same wide isles. We should be able to access all stores equally, not just one special store. Universal design being implemented in all environments is the ideal for accessibility

Love this store. I would love to shop in stores without music playing. People like different types of music. When I'm shopping surrounded by music I find annoying I don't stay very long, I'll go to a different store. I also prefer more room in isles so you don't feel jamed up against strangers, or in someone else's way.

Gg even if shops can provide such services, most malls are still quite unaccessible for people with disabilities. People also tend to find them annoying or a nuisance rather than be sympathetic.

always was curious how people with disabilities living their lives. so sad and insane probably. you cannot ride bicycle, you cannot ride motorcycle yourself. you cannot jump with parachute or sometimes just never knew what the sunset it

I’d ask you to challenge your view of disability. Saying we must live “so sad and insane” lives is actually offensive. We live normal lives like everyone else, and can be fulfilled members of the community we live in just like everyone else. Disability is not inherently sad, insane, or bad. So many of the challenges we face form from beliefs like this. There are many challenges disabled people have in life that able bodied people don’t face, often times these challenges result from the world being made without any thought to anyone but abled people.There are many disabled people on RU-vid and instagram who share what their life is like, it may be helpful for you to watch their content and learn about disability if you’re curious about it 🙂
