I don't see how this is AI. It's just a kitchen simulator with attached price lists. It would really help if people used this term more discriminately. Also, apart from the fact that they properly scan your room, Ikea Kitchen Designer has been doing similar things for years now, including fairly decent renders of how it's going to look with price lists of what exactly it's going to cost. The fact that this can still be sold as revolutionary tells more about how kitchen companies still work (because people let them get away with this) and less about the advancement of technology.
2 minutes in and I’m already fascinated. I work in commercial construction and we use a Matterport for documenting progress, especially with keeping track of in-wall electrical and plumbing rough-in. Super cool to see how it’s being implemented in other areas and being integrated with estimating.
It seems like Skipp is making design firms more accessible (and affordable) to the every day home owner. Skipp is disrupting the marketplace which is good for consumers. It would be very interesting to have different tiers that connect to even more affordable pieces, say from IKEA, regional furniture stores, or even furniture at Target and Wal-Mart. It would give a lot of options while using the same technology. When I moved into my new apartment, I struggled to find a service that allowed me to map out my new floor plan and place my furniture in it. Again, something Skipp could take advantage of. You may not need a laser scanner for exact measurements to do simple furniture layout, but being able to create a floor plan by taking photos in strategic areas would be a significant value add.

I love that it wasn't just a tool dropped on the masses to design their own thing, but that there are templates from actual designers as starting points. I can even see "signed" collabs with custom pieces loaded up, like "HMM x SKIPP" where you have a room built around one of your pieces and there's only X number of them available. Really great work you're doing, Ben.
Any potential roadmap where this becomes more of a desktop app that will take all your parameters and provide design options for DIYers that aren't necessarily designers or don't have that higher-mid-range budget? With the improvement of AR on phones, it's becoming easier to scan rooms from your pocket. Apple is doing some cools stuff with RoomKit, but it would only provide a canvas. I love the idea of AI providing concepts based on those scans. Keep up the great work!
Won’t it be cool if Skipp can also work out energy efficiency with layout and materials used, how placing a room there will affect air conditioning here, how much more light you get by adding a window, and so on

However my point is, if you paint Skipp in a favorable light and you have a stake in the company's financial well-being, then this should have been made clear at the very start of the video! Skipp is also the first link in the description box. So there is clearly an affiliation. According to RU-vid's regulations those have to be disclosed!

I'm a residetial GC who would be interested in this service for new builds based off of existing construction documents vs a scan of the existing space. I work with a local cabinet retailer who will design your space for free on the speculation you'll buy a cabinet and countertop package. They do a great job, but I'd never ask for 10 design options due to the labor involved on their end. I'd be willing to pay for access just to see lots of layout and finish options if it could be done off of plans. Clearly not your current business model, but it could make sense as an option or parallel track in the future. Cool tech.
I’m going to check it out. I’ll see how far I get. I’m curious what get from the renderings. Im curious if it helps me with measurements so I can shop for my own appliances and fixtures. So many companies will do it all but you have to use their tile, appliances, lighting and fixtures. Perhaps the renderings will give me more confidence when finding a GC.
Having worked in project management and scheduling, and having designed my own home, which came out pretty much the way I wanted it, I'm curious what the timelines are. So for Kim, how long between when she contacted Skipp and when any actual changes to her apartment began. Also, how long between start of construction to completion? I realize these are incident specific questions, but I'm curious about the time reduction aspect. Especially from an ordering/just-in-time-delivery perspective. I'm sure that current supply chain issues are screwing everyone over right now, but if we got back to pre-COVID ordering/delivery timelines, how much better could this technique make the whole process go?
This is cool! Do you have any concerns that it will become cookie cutter/ multiple choice design. Is there a way to add additional inputs to the AI to keep it's design eye fresh?
good question! I would say the reason so many houses are cookie cutter now is that organizing custom choice is time consuming. this makes it cheaper to get custom design

Sounds like Skipp is a computer program arranging existing building blocks within a defined area. Yes, I'm being critical of the use of the term "AI" but I clicked to see AI and I don't a lot of AI (maybe highlight that). That said, it's a great idea. Input room dimensions, other desirable attributes, click button => new design, click button => another design, click button => another design... Masco, are you watching?
Couldn't agree more! I can't stand people misusing terms like AI. This is nothing more than a gigantic catalog that takes what you sort and automatically calculates things. Is it a great software? Hell yes! Would I use it? Absolutely. Is there any "artificial intelligence" used anywhere in this? of course not.

My husband is a machine learning scientist, and I am an environmentalist woodworking hobbyist, and both of us are super excited about the future of AI in design and production, albeit for different reasons. Only downside is still dealing with contractors (here in DC especially) who will always be over budget and over time, and any money saved in the design process / materials will be spent in the construction. Programming robot builders would be a welcome addition to the process :)
